Legendary Gems
Kanai's Cube
Build Brief:
Here's a dead easy "The Thrill" conquest guide to smashing a GR45 with 8 minutes left, no ancients required. I used this build to clear a GR45 on my first attempt today with just shy of 9 minutes to spare. My paragon at the time was P380 and i had no ancient items & no gems leveled past 40.
The build is basically a clone of the LoN Bombardment build, using it's speed farm iteration as a base. The build is full of easy to come by items that should take most a few days at most to cobble together. There's heaps of alternates or "almost as good" items that you can use if you dont have the best in slot option, too.
Play-style / Method:
Steed charge your way through the white trash and straight to elites, as the elites/champions are all we are concerned with. As you come out of the steed charge, stop in the middle of a pack of the elites/champs and hit 1/2/3/4 to deploy your skills, then drop your bombs right away. Once the skills and bombs have been popped, steed charge over the elites/champs as the bombs rain down until their dead. Now race right to the next elite/champ pack and do the same thing again, collecting the pile of health globes that have exploded everywhere on your way off to the next group. Rinse & repeat until you have cleared the Grift. You can get by fairly easy just using IronSkin/LOJ/Consecration and save Akarats for the rift guardian or if multiple packs of elites/champs converge in the one place.
You'll 1-hit the rift guardian (or entire elite/champ packs) if you time deploying your 1/2/3/4 skills half way through the COE lightning phase, then setting off your Bombs right away. This will cause your thorns and bombs damage to land during the Physical element cycle, which will obliterate everything on the screen as a result of the 200% bombs/Thorns damage the physical element will boost for you.
Armor / Weapons Guide:
- What ever items you end up with, having Thorns damage as a secondary stat will give you a HUGE damage boost to the build. Having thorns on just half your items (with most of the base stat rolls you need) will shave 3-4mins off this already lightning fast build. If you hit a power pylon for example and you have thorns as a secondary stat on just half your items, just steed charging through ANYTHING will be a 1-hit kill, even the rift guardian. At the time of running this build, I only had two items with thorns damage, however if I'd realised the damage that thorns + Steed Charge/Spiked Barding did, I could have blitz'd the GR45 in <3min If I'd re-rolled thorns as a secondary stat on items that i hadn't bothered re-rolling any stats on yet.
- Leoric's is a requirement for the CDR.
- Pauldrons of the Skelly is preferred for mitigation. Death watch will do though.
- The amulets listed are just a best in slot for damage mitigation / armour boosting, but what your need most importantly is something with Pys %, STR, Cooldown Reduction and a socket. Even a yellow amulet rolled with that is just fine. Don't forget you can use a Hellfire amulet here for that 5th passive option too (choose "Indestructible").
- You need one of the two chest pieces as your primary and the other as your cubed chest piece. Doesn't matter which way you do it in this case.
- Sanguiny Vambraces are preferred for your Thorns damage, but you can always go Nemesis bracers instead and then stack elite/champ groups at those pylons. The Vambraces give overall damage boosts, but Nemesis Bracers will let you clear the Grift substantially faster due to elite packs spawning on the 4 or 5 pylons that appear in every Grift. The pylon effect will allow you to smash down the elites it spawns instantly or in seconds anyway, so it's just free progression basically.
- St.Achews are the best gloves for the damage mitigation, but stone gauntlets will do if your lacking them. Your going to have to watch out for elemental damage though if you dont have the St.Achews, so bear that in mind.
- Belt of the trove is required. Preferably a belt that has the 6 second drop down rate, as opposed to the slower 8 second roll. This is both for the rate at which it drops additional bombs and the defensive skills/mitigation that each bomb drop triggers.
- Hexing pants are best in slot for that damage while moving, but pox faulds are an acceptable backup for that grouped damage effect.
- Illusory boots are a no-brainer for their ability to keep you moving and can be farmed in 5min from a public bounty farming run. Ice Climbers or Fire Walkers will do if you dont have them though.
- Justice Lantern and the OrotZ were well suited for their damage mitigation and cooldown stats. Realistically though, anything with cooldown reduction, area damage and strength with a socket will do. Justice Lantern will make a HUGE difference though to your surviveability.
- Swiftmount is almost a requirement as it will keep you on that pony without any downtime if you have enough CDR. The Doombringer is pretty sweet though as an alternative with that additional PHY% roll and area damage too.
- Lidless Wall is a powerhouse of stats to have, but the Akarats and Coven's shields are brilliant damage mitigators too, especially if you dont have the Justice Lantern ring or St.Archews gloves. Ideally you want STR/VIT as well as area damage and CDR.
Legendary Gems To Socket:
Boyarsky's Chip is mandatory. BOS and BOT are the preferred next Leg Gem options. However....... if you are shockingly unlucky with set rolls and items, you can drop the BOS or BOT for a L25+ ranked Esoteric Alteration. The Gem at level 25 or above provides a permanent 10% non-Physical damage reduction & while below half life, your resistances to Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison, and Arcane are all increased by 75%.
Regular Gems To Socket:
Diamonds in chest, helm and legs. Yellow gem for Thorns damage in the weapon.
Follower Items:
Makes no difference at all. The Templar equipped with either of the standard Stun or Eun Jang Do builds will do fine. I forgot I still had my follower disengaged from completing a set dungeon just before this, so you don't even need to have a follower. I didn't when I cleared this GR45 as per above, but they can only serve to make things easier for you. Having the Templar equipped on it's own with no weapons will be all you need to help keep you alive even with terrible damage mitigation on your build items, due to the healing it provides.

Wow this *is* "dead easy", you weren't kidding lol. Thanks for the guide.
I easily completed this by just rolling thorns damage on any random leg/ancient piece of gear I had laying around, but I went with Unity combo. As long as you have Trove Belt, Mortal Drama in Cube, Curiass + Heart of Iron, and have thorns on a majority of pieces you'll do enough damage to plow any elite pack when physical comes up on CoE.
My helm/gloves/bracers/boots/shoulders were a total hodgepodge of worthless crap just for stats + thorns and I had not trouble. Also ran Bombardment in place of Prophet, and kept punish.
That's a bug with the game Blizzard are working on. It will have counted in the actual progression of conquest/journey tasks for your characters, it's just that the pop-up screen congratulating you for that didn't happen. The achievement will be passed/complete in your character profile though.
You weren't kidding - this was all kinds of easy. I didn't have any shoulders or a leoric's, so I used the Akkarat's Awakening shield for more CDR, an Andariel's Visage helm and crafted a Corruption for shoulders and it was a total breeze - had 8 minutes left. Great guide, thank you!
I can't have those pants so i put another pant just to full slot... but it still work easily thanks for sharing ...
Just a question - how the zodiac ring works with this build as there are no spenders in it? Maybe we want a unity there or some offensive ring is available i assume.
Until Bombardment/Consecration are read as spenders by the system and they make Zodiac work.
AWESOME BUILD! Thank you very much for sharing it with everyone !
This worked perfect. I literally was done before the timer was half way, and the only thing ancient was my weapon, and it still rolled garbage. Very nice build, thank you!
You want thorns on everything. The idea behind this build is to take your Invoker build, replace all the set items with some random legendary that also has thorns rolled, and then just play like you were before (with the exception of Punish doing basically no damage now). I tried it out yesterday using mostly garbage from my stash and did it on my first try. If you don't have anything good, just start holding onto whatever legendaries you find that roll with thorns and can replace a part of the Invoker set.
The one thing I would advise anyone trying for "The Thrill" achievement, almost mandatory, is regarding your follower. Equip whatever follower you want with the legendary trinket which wont let them die, then equip yourself and your follower with Unity rings. You then share 50% of your damage with your follower and the follower can not die. Huge boost in survivability and frees up talent choices to be more DPS focused.
It's a waste of time & NOT advised at all. There's no need for it, as even with a poorly cobbled together version of set items for this build, surviveability is not an issue as you use the virtual perma-steed horse to hit & run on all enemies and groups as it is, already. You'd be giving up CDR and damage for no reason, when the play-style of this is to run into a pack, unload your skills/bombs/thorns, then sprint away to an area with no enemies (while moving between elite packs). The Justice Lantern ring or even just the Illusiary boots are already more than enough damage mitigation alone, especially in a low GR level like 45.
The Laws of Hope / Hopeful Cry skill selection combined with the Long arms of the Law passive will keep health globes spewing everywhere all the time, too. So you just collect them during/after destroying a bunch of elites/champs on the way off to your next group. Keeps health up all the time.
.
A viable alternative if you didn't have the ring would be a Helltooth or Stone of Jordan - but getting a socket and decent rolls on those two is VERY difficult. The ORoTZ ring drops very frequently too, and it can be upgraded to from a yellow ring in the cube very easily as well - much more easily than the other two rings i listed (the Helltooth has to be crafted after getting the relevant Keywarden/Boss crafting mats).
worked like a charm, many thanks!
Well this guide and build is the greatest! I was stuck on 39 for a week, changed a few parts up and VIOLA, 45 no-set (The Thrill) is now done! Thanks so much!
Exactly what I was looking for, now to PL a crusader and reroll all of my stashed legendaries from dex to strength.
@ Altreg01:
I ran my sader with a couple INT items when I did it. Make sure you load up on CDR and Thorns and you will breeze through. I thought the build felt slightly clunky at first however is very quick to get used to. For me, I was stuck at GR39, ran through a couple lower grifts before 45 to get used to the feel of the new build and skill placements and completed 45 the first try. Think I used the Enchantress turning everything into chickens although probably doesn't matter which follower you use.
I must be missing something I can't seem to make this work. Any help?
I tried this out yesterday and made the following changes based on gear availability.
Used FW instead of Illusory Boots
Used an ancient bracer instead of Sanguinary Vambraces
Used ancient pox faulds instead of Hexing Pants
I died a couple times and I did manage to do the rift but it was 3 minutes over time.
When you talk about white trash dying just by touching you, that's not happening for me. On my Physical COE cycle, it takes 2 bombards + non physical COE ponying around + 1/2/3/4 skills to actually kill people and that results in the timer running out.
What am i doing wrong / any suggestions?
it dosent work at all for me and i got the full build
