Build Guide
Meteors rain from the sky in this build. We use the Tal6 and Tal4 bonuses to gain both damage and defense. The main damage method is to channel, which will proc etched sigil meteors. We also interweave manual casting of meteor in between ES procs (take note of the rotation below). Make sure you are holding down channeling, lest you risk dropping your Deathwish, Etched Sigil, and Taeguk bonuses.
For defense, you'll need to make sure you're positioned for increased DR from the Halo of Karini Storm armor attacks. Since the idea with this build is to deal damage up close, just make sure your Karini is being applied before engaging up close, and if necessary, teleport away to regain this bonus. Most of the time you will be killing quick enough that this is not an issue.
We also have Aquila, and many means of Resource management to support it: RCR, APoC, and even MW:Conduit. Ensure you have +Max AP on source and from paragon, as this increases the amount of AP buffer you have until Aquila will drop off.
Keep in mind your Nilfur's Boast Boots to deal quite a bit of increased damage to targets that are singled out.
In order to be able to face elites in this manner, we've placed some additional defense in the build. Unity makes an appearance, granting 50% DR (assuming follower and follower token). If you intend to swap out Unity, you can opt for Stone of Jordan for offense, go for a shielding setup with ABBs, deflection and Galvanizing ward for defense. For more detail on these swaps see the alternates section below.
We also use Blur to our advantage, with Illusionist assisting with mobility. Scramble gives increased movement after taking hits, another nice bonus.
Multipliers Audacity and Trapped give us more damage when up close. The Grand Vizier in the cube is one of our other multipliers, but it also happens to help save AP on manual casting of Meteor.
Invigorating Gemstone provides us with some huge CC immunity. This allows you to channel and benefit from the multipliers of DW and ES without interruption. This bonus is very nice. Prevents knockback, vortex, nightmarish, frozen, and more. While you could opt for Krelm's buff bracers instead here, these take up an armor slot, which would seriously compromise the defense. Note however, wormhole still affects your character, even with the cc immunity.
Note: while the video still shows slotting Powerful gem, I have since swapped to using the invigorating gemstone, and it is much smoother. As also noted in the affixes section, you can always roll 3-4 %CC resist affix secondaries on gear, and get almost the same effect. Not including this as the base recommendation, as these are hard to get on ancient items.
Unity worn gives 15% elite damage, and a hefty 50% DR with follower Unity and token. UA fits great as the second life passive.
MW:Mists can be kept on autocast to help proc Tal6. Use numlock or scripting. I found that casting a manual meteor might be required every now and again if you find yourself running through a semi-empty rift.
Oculus Ring, Unity, Enchanting Favor for your follower. Templar is preferred for the increased regen, and healing. You can also opt for the templar's Intimidate ability, this would help proc trapped at range. Make sure your follower uses Thunderfuy, as this weapon slows, and would also proc trapped.

Etched Sigil AS Breakpoint:
Etched Sigil was bug fixed on the PTR. Its' ICD is now approximately 60 frames (1 second) as the item tooltip indicates. However, you need to stay in certain attack speed breakpoints to get as close to this ICD as possible, and subsequently proc etched sigil as fast as possible. See this link for the full breakpoint chart. The breakpoint we are looking to hit for AT:SD is:
- 1.538462538 AS to 1.666666667 AS or 12 Frames / Tick
This breakpoint is easy enough to hit. All you need to do is max out your attack speed in paragon. This will give you exactly 1.54 AS on sheet. If you happen to get stuck with an AS roll on weapon, don't fret, you can stay within this breakpoint even with an additional (unwanted) AS roll on weapon.

Meteor Shower Cast Rotation. Yes. You will want to manually cast meteor, even on a channeling build. This will bring down more meteors over time, and since we can channel during those impacts, this will bring more damage to the table than just channeling. However, you only want to manually cast meteor about once every 3 seconds.
Why 3 seconds? I timed both manually casting meteor shower and using meteor shower in combination with Etched Sigil + Arcane torrent.
- Manually casted meteor took 138 to 141 frames to have all 7 meteors impact from the initial time of cast.
- Channeled + manually cast meteor took 155 to 176 frames to have all 14 meteors impact from the initial time of cast.
Since 60 frames is equivalent to 1 second of game time, and 180 frames is 3 seconds, this puts the rotation for manually casting in between our channeled abillity at about once every 3 seconds.
Rotation:
- Channel.
- Immediately manually cast meteor.
- Continue holding down your channeling ability.
- Note that ES will continue to proc every second while holding down channeling.
- Wait until Meteors from both your initial ES proc and your manual cast finish impacting.
- Decide if you can stand and continue dpsing, or if you need to move your character (either dodge attacks, grouping, or for oculus) at this point.
- Rinse and repeat.
Note that manually casting a second time (before 3 seconds have passed) will likely decrease your overall damage, as you wouldn't be benefiting from the multipliers of DW + ES as often during your meteor impacts. This is why it is very important to not manually cast too often either.

Alternates:
- Power of the Storm: Allows better resource, and possibly can slot Amethyst in helm with this swap for higher toughness.
- Astral Presence: If you are still having issues with resource after considering all the recommendations in the guide, consider using Astral presence in place of Audacity. This would lower damage a tad, but would offer higher uptime on Aquila.
- Bane of the Powerful: While i feel immunity to cc (from Invigorating Gemstone) is superior to the multiplier from Powerful here, you can opt for Powerful, especially if you're grouping with a barb or monk, someone else who could provide you with cc immunity. Also, with high %CC resistance on gear, you can get by without having the CC immunity, and slot the extra multiplier and elite damage and reduction from Powerful instead.
- Krelm's Buff Bracer: While this swap decreases defense, If you prefer to use the third gem slot, and also don't have any other group members to provide such a bonus, can be a good placement in the cube, or worn, with cubing nems. I much prefer using the Invigorating gemstone though. Can either replace Aquila or swap out Unity for RoRG, and wear Aquila, with this swap.
- Ray of Frost - Cold Blood: Alternate rune to FN:Mists. Also a channeling ability, so should also proc your ES, however, I found it easier to keep up Tal6 with the FN:Mists variation. Note also that if you intend to use this ability as your main spender, you need to take a look at the Etched sigil breakpoint chart linked above, as Ray of Frost requires different breakpoints than Arcane Torrent.
- Deflection: as a standalone rune, you can go for deflection instead of conduit for some small level of shielding / recovery while attacking. This swap will require Topaz in helm as well as shoulder roll, and will also require you keep an eye on resource more often, but it's still possible to keep up Aquila in most situations with this setup.
Swaps for Unity:
- RoRG + Endless Walk: Great damage multiplier, a good alternate for group. Less defensive in general though. Thanks to Tinne for the suggestion. Note that this swap would probably only be made in group with a support, as this is a significant toughness loss. Drop CoE in addition to Unity.
- Ashnagarr's Blood Bracer + Galvanizing Ward + Deflection + RCR on both shoulder and Topaz in helm: Best defensive swap. Cube or wear ABBs. Swap out blur. Use the rune Power of the Storm for reduced AP costs.
EDIT (10/16/2017): Updated guide with list of alternates for Unity, so as to make the build more viable for group setting speeds. I tested these briefly to ensure they performed as expected.
Stone of Jordan is good for offensive swap.EDIT: see below or on guide, RoRG + EW is likely better offensive swap.Great work man! I’m looking forward for the patch 2.6.1 going live to test your guides... this one and the frozen orbs are the most interesting for me.
Thanks bcid! Yeah be sure to test them out. I put quite a bit of time into fine tuning them to balance offense, defense, and resource management, but builds are always subject to preference, so try out some swaps for sure!
seriously man, great build.. love it, but i do not see how the hell you are staying alive... I tried a 90 today and couldn't stay alive to save my ass (literally) I even tried using an esoteric for damage reduction and no go. I do not understand how you going through a 90 with 48 mil toughness keeps you alive and i try with 104 mil and get wrecked.
So far enjoyed your builds and in-depth realization and explanation of your builds. Keep up the good work!!
Very fun to play and effective. +1
I've been using a very similar build on the PTR, and I learned very quickly that you need to keep a close eye on you Tal stacks and make sure you don't drop the taeguk stacks. I was also using Ray of Frost - Cold Blooded and a topaz in the helm. With that setup, you keep up Aquila Cuirass easily. I think I was also using APD (I rolled a primal one, so I wanted to use it lol). I think it works with Ray of Frost haha so that might add some toughness. But my paragon is only like 850 and I had no Caldesanns. So I think it's actually pretty easy to use this build. Quite tacky when you're always channeling.
EDIT (10/26/2017): After testing out timings for meteor channeled and manual casted meteor, now recommending about 3s between manual casts.
I've completely revised the meteor shower rotation section. It's fairly detailed now.
Also listing Enchanting Favor on follower now. I was assuming that choice prior, but it's required for Unity. Forgot to include that one.
Playing with this build on hardcore, i am loving the survivability. Great find Cratic, good job
EDIT (10/28/2017): Did some testing on stream today. I made the wrong decision with placing Powerful as the third gem.
Invigorating Gemstone is superior. This gives us CC immunity, meaning knockback, frozen, nightmarish, vortex, etc. are all nullified. This means higher uptime of your channeling, which translates to more damage multiplier uptime on DW + ES. Not sure if it's better or worse damage wise, but it feels strong, and more consistent than Powerful.
Note however, wormhole still affects your character, even with the cc immunity.
We use the gemstone instead of the krelm's buff bracer here, because Krelm's would take an armor slot. You'd have to give up either Nems or Aquila, neither of which we want to do.
You can of course swap this out if someone else in your group provides CC immunity, but IMO, solo and otherwise, it's really nice. Try it out.
The other option, if you want to retain your 3rd gem slot for powerful, is to roll as many %CC resist secondaries as possible. This would ensure that those CC effects last as short as possible, and still allow you to slot Powerful, or a 3rd gem.
I've updated the guide to match.
Glad you like it Morangus! with the stun immunity from the gemstone I just added, feels even tankier, should be even better for hardcore.
Thank you very much for your efforts in providing so many different builds and guides with thorough explanations. I would like to give some feedback in hopes it is helpful for people, and maybe you can also shed some more light for me on this
This version is great and feels better from the start when comparing it with the Firebirds variation. I tried both now, far from optimal gear though, barely scratched together what I could find in the last days. And I still miss the Halo of Karini ring so I went with the Halo of Arlyse. My weapon is not even ancient, just 4 pieces of my gear are (with boots being primal), no augments at all, so I am at 13k Int... at Paragon 1350 offseason now: https://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Boonatix-2950/hero/89500216
I had tremendous issues with the FB variation to survive, even in duo with a healmonk, who was not able to keep me alive (he was also coming back after a long break so gear also not optimal) As soon as some elemental spell hit me, or poison spawned below me, I instantly died. The damage output is crazy with FB and feels like it can and will go higher, but you have to stand still for it.
With this TalRasha variation, this is not so much of a problem, it feels better especially solo with Unity and Aquila, but the biggest difference is that the damage output feels better (to me). It feels faster, even the first meteors I cast hit harder and you do not have to worry so much about staying still all the time to ramp up the damage, you can just run around, reposition, channel, reposition, channel, feels a bit like the old "stutter-stepping-days" of the Hammerdin In addition, the meteors also hit hard on distance (at least when speedfarming T13 rifts) so there was no reason to always be within 15yds of mobs. And keeping the 4 stacks up is actually not a problem at all since the 4th stack always keeps refreshing as long as you manually cast Meteors every few seconds and weave in frost nova and teleport during channeling...
The build feels slower than TalVyr of course, but the damage potential is definitely higher than TalVyr basically from zero on. I will try this today again in duo with my monk buddy, andn use SoJ with 20% firedmg instead of the Unity and see how it goes there. But since my gear is basically not even close to the full potential, I am really looking forward to how high this can go in season then
So what does manually spamming Meteor do that screws up that damage? Like trying to do 1 manual meteor like once every second?
I'm having trouble getting 4 stacks of tal's bonus to apply. It just wants to hover around 3. What am I doing wrong?
So, I answered my own question. For anybody else who might be having trouble getting the full stacks you need to cast meteor manually every so often. The etched won't trigger your fire damage. I was just being lazy and not bothering with the manual cast because I thought it was only for a slight boost to dps, and farming lower rifts I didn't need the boost. Maybe the guide could be updated to not the requirement of the manual cast or to make it more clear.
EDIT (11/13/2017): Updated with alternate option for storm armor, with the scramble rune, for additional movement speed.
Also listing Templar's Intimidate as a follower skill option, for increased Trapped proc at range.
EDIT (11/14/2017): Decided to make Storm Armor: scramble rune baseline to the build and guide, as the movement speed here is really nice for getting through the rift, and is very manageable with topaz in helm.
However, if you have issues with Aquila still, or prefer Power of the storm for allowing Amethyst in helm, this is still a very solid choice.
EDIT (11/15/2017): Changed build to be labeled as solo, as this is mostly a solo build.
In alternates section, changed out offensive SoJ recommendation for RoRG + Endless Walk. This would net higher damage overall. Completely missed that combo. Thanks to Tinne for the suggestion. Note that you'd probably only want to make this swap in group, as the defense from unity is very good fit for this build in solo speeds.
EDIT (11/15/2017): Added astral presence as an alternate passive, in the case you still need more resource. I'd swap out audacity, personally, but it's up to you which passive to drop for Astral.
In response, Ulve124, I think Focus and restraint would be too much of a toughness loss for solo speeds, plus it might be harder to keep up your tal6 bonus and contiguously channel. I'd prefer endless walk for this build if I were swapping in a jewelry set.
If you've found a way to make it work though - push on fellow wiz!
A very fun and awesome build, did some tweaks i see. Possible to go even higher than 95 you think?
When doing groups swap out unity for stone of jordan right?
