Yeah, like you could have the same name and your account name (or a random name you can make up for privacy) that way you wouldn't have to worry about getting a character name first but what if "everyone" got the name Diablo?...
You do not need extrta mechanics to allow last names. Simply being able to use spaces gives you last names.

Baldur's Gate II has spaces. I am currently playing with a Orgrimm Doomhammer. That is the maximum number of characters allowed. 18, including spaces.
Diablo II is 15 and you cannot use spaces. The number of characters should also be extended. 15 is too small. Especially for Role Players like me. Uther Lightbringer would never fit into LOD naming restrictions, even without the space. It's over by 2 characters.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
why can't people just role play with shorter names? >_< Theres no need for last names, you have your char name and your account name... next thing you know people will want to start allowing their chars to get married....
Most characters from role playing games (or the majority of games I play) I know have two names, or maybe a name and a title.
Keldorn Firecam, Viconia DeVir, Nalia De'Arnise, Tyrande Whisperwind, Malfurion Stormrage, Illidan Stormrage, Malus Darkblade. Malekith the Witchking, Joan or Arc, William Wallace, Grommash Hellscream, Mannoroth the Destroyer, Cain the Elder, Deckard Cain, Adria the witch, Wirt the peg legged boy.
Some do have singular names, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc, Valygar, Yoshimo.
All we need is spaces. We can easily choice not to use them, like we do now with underscores. But for those who want a longer name, possibly with multiple words or names, they can.
