The only way Blizzard could make the Gold the currency in D3 is to make a system way more gold dependant than before.
- Auction House (battle.net system which people could put stuff on sail for gold even when logged off)
- Make gold very much more rare or easy to pickup from mobs. (I don't see myself loot every gold from the thousands of monsters i just killed) (auto-gold pickup, drops only from certain mobs/boss?)
- Respeccing (With the new skill trees Blizzard are implementing, i just feel like respeccing will be possible. But shouldn't be too easy (not free) to do.
- Quest reward -> Gold! (if it ends at a NPC / drops from the mob or chest like The Countess)
- Mercenaries : That's one of a good way to make money worth something. Mercenaries need to be much stronger and cost much more (comparing economy here). So losing ur Merc would make you angry.
1. Already said they would have an AH
2. Running over gold picks it up
3. Said there will be a respeccing system
4. Same as D2 really just getting the gold at the end from a different place
5. Even if mercs are really strong, based on the gameplay video, you don't need all that much help killing stuff so its not that attractive an option. Obviously for bosses it would be nice, but if you keep dying they probably would too, not to mention any gold after a boss would probably even it out or at least come close.
It's something that won't happen in D3, so you can stop dreaming about things like the auction house.
Oh, sorry, its just something they strongly implied could happen.
"Since you brought it up let?s move on to the World of Warcraft?s auction house. World of Warcraft did not invent the auction house trading system. It may have certainly refined it, but an irrational hatred of the game that some of you seem to have really shouldn?t translate to game systems that aren?t original to it. There are some major advantages to an auction house similar to WoW?s. You don?t have to be present being the biggest and best. You can be playing with friends, PvPing, asleep, at school or work, and someone has the ability to see your items, and you have a greater chance to sell/trade them. You don?t have to spam a channel, you don?t have to even be online and playing. That?s HUGE, and really the main reason so many people use trading systems such as websites and forums for Diablo II. You want to focus on playing the game or not playing the game, not sitting around hoping someone wants your item."
Well they either make Gold uncommon or provide useful ways to spend it. Gold in D2 was all about 3 things. One Reviving your Merc, two Gambling, three repairing.
Has anyone actually ever got a good item from gambling in D2?
I think it would be good if in D3 monsters wouldnt drop a lot of gold but you could get lots (relatively) of it from bosses, hidden chests etc to add some sort of feeling of achievment to it
Ive gotten low level set items, low level Unique, and some garbage Rares.
Sets and uniques became impossible to get after they got patched. Now you can't get higher than Rare items, unfortunately, which is why gambling as a whole has been deprecated in players' eyes, although there are still those that realize the potential it has for granting a very good Rare item, which, in some cases, can be way better than the other cookie-cutter items.
Before it got patched, this is what i primarly used gold for next to hirelings. Since I always play casters, I don't normally incure much physical damage since I'm normally out of the fray, so my durability didn't decrease much at all.
It's just a pain how much it can cost to do those things, though, but if they weren't that costly, there would be no point in saving all that gold, I suppose.

I mentioned this in another thread, but you can still get any unique or set item from gambling. There are items that you cannot get based on your character level, the item you gamble is determined from this.
I know this because I recently got Griffon's Eye and Maras from gambling. It's still very profitable to gamble for circlets rings and amulets. You'll get the best for your money.
One of the biggest reasons i quit diablo 2 was because of the economy based on runes. What with duping going on all the time it was practically pointless to play legit when someone else could have just gotten their runes off of some site. (find that completely pointless who would pay for a game ehhhhem..wow)
I like the idea of an auction house on battle.net. And having merchants that you could by good items from and actually spend some gold. Not sure if they should make it like wow though with the copper and silver... might make gold worth more just change the first 2 names.
Runes that disappear, currency being worth nothing... Sounds a lot like the US economy =D
Here's a thought.
Perhaps they could bring in a system or sharing for gold. IE: Renting. For example, I have a nice item say a powerful sword. You, a less experienced, less wealthy player wants to use said item for a particular quest. Well the dev team could add a system of trading for rent, the two players specify the price and the time of use and then simply trade the item. When the time or the money runs out the item disappears and reappears with the original player.

Eh? Eh? Cool right? ;-)
lol wouldnt be bad =3
could also add an option if the person liked the sword a lot to buy it off of you lol
To fix the imbue system the way you described; they would have to have it create better items.
All the items I've gotten imbued with magical properties all sucked.

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.
IMO it doesnt really matter if they succeed at making gold worth something. If they try and it becomes inflated, the playerbase will just start trading item for item anyway. It's not like we can lose anything here lol if everyone has too much gold then, it failed who cares trade x for y. who cares what x is lol and if it works and gold is still rare after months then ok cool, x will be gold?
also if it works TOO well and gold is deflated, like it costs a million to repair armor and top mobs drop 1000, players will still trade items for items in addition to items for gold.... i dont think any of these possibilites is "better" or more fun than the rest.

im hoping more for a middle kinda aim
enough to repair armor easily and simple scrolls
but when you buy a new equipment from a shopkeeper
the item has to be decent to good
and your average player should only be able to afford one piece of equipment at a time
not like a whole set of good equipment lol
like how the armor prices were
but the swords and lesser armor can cost that much instead
armor even higher
and rings incredibly higher
i think that would inspire doing quests and getting loots for equipment rather than just buying them and playing more defensely so to say =3
you could also start with more basic equipment to make up for bad luck =3
IMO unless they somehow FIRMLY establish that gold should be used to trade for items online, I don't see how it's going to work.
Because when I first start playing D3, I'm definitely not going to be trading on good items I have for gold unless I know I can use said gold to buy even better items when I have more gold.

You follow what I mean?
Well, the foil to your question is that if you spend gold on items that help your leveling experience it then makes it easier for you to farm for items which you can then turn around and sell. Furthermore, it will only be a natural progression for the beginning economy to be lacking.
Once people start nearing the top levels and have the leisure to farm instead of level we will see the economy forming. It will take a long time for market values to form but nevertheless, it'll get there in the end.

And all the common sense and logic imply that an AH would be impossible in D3. Here's my argument: http://www.diablofans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=390918#post390918

I hope they don't put Aution Houses in Diablo III.
I just don't see the point.
