So, even though I haven't seen any socketed items yet in D3, I'm assuming they will be in since we see all those topazes and such scatterd all over. And one big pet peeve of mine from D2 was when you were either moving things in your inventory/stash around and accidentaly socketed an item with something totally worthless. So what I'm suggesting is some sort of socket-cleaning ability that maybe you could pay an NPC to do for you. Not only would this be another gold sink, but that way you could clean out miss-socketed items, or clean out an old one to put in a better one.
Did anyone ever play the text-based free online game Shimlar? In it, if you had something socketed in an item that you didn't want anymore, you could go to someone and pay them to remove it. You could select to keep the item and destroy the gem, destroy the item and keep the gem, or you could try to keep them both, which was a gamble because you had a 50% chance to keep both, but a 25% chance to lose the item and a 25% chance to lose the gem. I think it would be a valuable system to implement, it would support experimenting with different things in different items without the finality of permenantly putting it in something.
Unless of course they go the same route as the rune system, where you could put them in/take them out of skills alll you want to really experiment with different combos. But I don't see them doing that with items.

I believe items should be unsocketable as a gold sink... re-socketing items seemed essential to me. Especially considering that most socketable items in DII were crap.
Eh I'm kinda tore on this. Socketing something means you'll eventually outgrow it (usually) and end up selling it. Which means you'll end up possibly buying new socketed gear.
If we make everything unsocketable I think we may risk stagnating the economy to a degree.
Maybe unsocketing it will lower the items max durability by a good amount? Prying those gems and stuff out could rellly cause damage to the weapon. That way, you can redo mistakes or upgrade when you want to, but it won't stagnate the economy like Daemaro said.

Was just going to suggest the same thing
I doubt accidentally socketing an item will still have the same problems given the 2 item sized inventory. Gems would be the small items, while weapons/armor would be in the larger icon tab.
I still wouldn't mind a socket window to be brought up, might make nonequiped items easier to socket with the 2 tabs.
C'mon man, if you fuck up don't blame the game for it. This would annoy me so much.
Sometimes lag was to blame though. I would click a gem or rune in my inventory, then click an empty space in my stash to put it there, but the game was lagging, so I really clicked next to that spot, where I had my 3os 15%ed archon plate, and whoops, there goes my nigma...

Very true, good point.

I think it should indeed lower the durability of the weapon, and perhaps decrease the stats of the gem aswell? Like you remove a perfect gem , you get a flawless back.
Nicely done, sir, I agree. So it would cost money, and it would perma-damage the item by about 10%, and lower the quality of the gem one tier. I think this would be an acceptable price and not make people re-use the same gems/items over and over. Someone call Bashiok!

There's a game which is almost a perfect clone of D2(except it has like a pet system) called Fate: Uderscovered Realms which has the exact sub-system you are suggesting, and It's a very good idea for D3 to have such.

Sure it's annoying when you are socketing things on purpose, but it saves those accidental socketings.
