Well, i was thinking about the whole randomization that will be implemented in the game and i thought ''Why not make the item looks random also?''
I have created a godly painting using my really advanced paint program... called paint, to show you what i mean.
As you can see, this helm has 2 horns in its regular state ( Like the ''Great Helm'' In D2 ).
But with this randomized items system, it will have alot of ways it will drop in, making it more special and better for players who like to costumize thier character's appereance.
Imagine the endless options that you can randomize other items like Armors, Gloves, Boots, Shoulders, etc...
NOW, i know that for this reason there are many items in the Diablo games, to make a big vareity ( is that how u spell vareity??)
and make it possible to costumize apperance, but sometimes ( Like in D2), to reach a certain level of power, especially in PVP, you have had to have certain items for your certain build or character. So, if this system will be implemented, you will still be able to wear the best items for your build, and still look different.
Please dont critisize the image because it took me 20 seconds to make it and it is simply to show you people what i mean by ''Randomized Item Looks''.
It sounds like a nice idea, but I think it would be hard to pull off.
That is true. But if they would make a few options for every type of item, for an example:
(using D2 names)
Quilted Armor:
1. no right sleeve.
2. All torn up and shit.
3. Its a little but shorter making your Barb's Belly pop out xD
Leather Gloves:
1. Gloves bot covering your fingers.
2. One glove is shorter than the other.
3. Gloves covering more of your arm towards your shoulder.
If they would just make like a few things for each item, it would be nice... And its not so hard too, i think.
It sounds good, but I feel that this is one of the aspects that makes it a "Diablo" game. Most the time just by looking at someone's character, you can tell what items they are using... I can understand why some people would not like this but I always found it appealing to know what my opponents or allies are using.
haha epic drawing, i love it. Great idea too, sounds like it could easily be pulled off. maybe the less horns a helm has or less "sleeves" a shirt has could somehow go along with the attributes of the armour peice aswell

Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could
I know in Baldur's Gate there were certain things that kind of did this (helms, some swords/weapons). Also, as far as the art goes, Diablo has had different rings? Obviously that is not visible on the character, but it is one less step.
Eh, you're asking for a loooot of extra time put into artwork just for the sake of aesthetics. I'd prefer that time put into making more unique items! Or like Doppel said, make it a functional indicator about the item.

It would even give Diablo 3 players a sense of fashion; wanting to find certain kinds of armors.
That wouldn't be bad. Of course there is a lot of work to do that for every item. I'd just have to repair a lot because I don't wanna wear broken things.
It sounds like a nice idea, but I think it would be hard to pull off.
I believe it would be.

That'd be cool, but then the process would take the whole point out of randomization.
For example, if you came across some quilted armor that was torn up or missing a sleeve, then naturally it would be inferior quality.
And on the other side of that equation, if you came across quilted armor that was completely in tact, then it would be superior quality.
So every time you'd come across inferior armor it'd be ripped or torn while when you come across superior armor it'd be complete; and therefore not very random. Only thing random would be if it's superior or inferior or anything else.
So I guess the way you would have to do it is have random looks for each quality. Like multiple different ways the armor could be torn or sometimes missing a sleeve.
EDIT: Or something with the durability like suggested.

Why not determine how it looks by the durability? If the game will have it that is.
At 100% durabilty it will look perfect.
At 66% durability it will look a bit broken (1 horn broken).
At 33% durability it will look rather torn (2 horns broken).
At 0% durability you will be naked.

I would love this. That would really set character apart. They don't need that many random choices but it would be nice to have and I think Blizz should consider it.
I like the idea, especially if items changed in appearance as durability dropped.
For lower level Items, more diversity would be nice, though legendary (or whatever they're now called) items should always look the same (though still could change with durability).
I think changing the actual 3D model would take too much effort, for like in return..
But the idea is really, nice.. Something I would expect from a Diablo III game - more randomization!
What if they used 2D Textures showing a broken/rusty/shining sword - or different drawings in a helm?
you could pull this off with the 'surperior' type items. have them shine more.
in d2 the rares sometimes had colour on them and it looked ridiculous half the time. i dont want a big purple helm. just like i dont want my horns to be broken or skewed.

I don't want to be walking around with a helmet with bullwinkle moose horns on it. Or both horns broken off.
Then again, it'd be nice to have a sweet looking one and laugh at the people with broken shabby looking ones.
And thanks for loving my epic drawing xD

Yeah it not be as you say, but then again; imagine how many more items (potentially) that will be in diablo 3.
Still though, that is a really REALLY good idea.
Example- "Hey Bro, check out my greathelm!" "Lol noob that greathelm doesn't have horns like mine!" "Well my item image has a gem in it" "Oooo nice"
::EDIT:: I agree with Zero(pS), a 3d randomization would be too hard, but hey; a 2d randomization wouldn't be that hard.
