The problem of the wizard is that her Surv. is cooldown based. She also has too many spells that require her to be stationary, in a game where elites are lightning fast and hit like trucks.
If you try a build with Arcane Orb / Magic Missile or Sphere and 4 defensive other spells you'll have very little issues.
Otherwise, if you try to be creative and use disintegrate, ray of frost, arcane torrent or any other gimmicks you will get your ass handed to you unless you overgear the mobs.

I switched to this build for late NM and early hell. It's hilarious because there were quite a few times the monk and barb I was with were running away from arcane/frozen/jailer packs and I'm just blizzard RAYYYYYY frost nova back up blizzard RAYYYYYY. Blizzard does like 500/tick for me, which over 7-8 mobs is like 4k DPS, plus my Ray ticks for 4500-5k on the mob closest to me and melts each unit as they try to get close.
Recently switched to the prototypical MM/orb diamond skin build though since I haven't done that since early normal and I like to mix it up at least once per act.
You are correct. for all those people making comments about normal mode, im in Act 2 of HELL. and it sucks. even with a lot of int, my damage is still that of 1/4 of the DH who is 4 levels higher (given the 4 lvls help), and my hpp was at 9k and the DH at lvl 57 was at 18k. hmmm. i regeared and gemmed and all my gear is in the re. lvl 40+ or so, and i still cant get my stats that high. They are borken at the moment, and nothing I do gear-wise or skill-wise improves this.
Sorry to be the one to tell you this, your gear sucks. I'm 53 and sitting at 22k hp and 3900 DPS. Go hit up the AH, look for rare armor pieces with at least 30 int / 30 vit and sort them ascendingly by buyout. You should be able to find upgrades for most slots for 10k-20k gold each. I can take about 5 hits from most mobs before being in danger. Yes some of the mobs hit for 15k-20k, but those have very slow wind up swings you can avoid.
GALVANIZING WARD CHANGES THE GAME FOR WIZARD. I can't stress this enough. The more you move and avoid attacks, the better Galvanizing Ward is. It can regenerate enough health in a single fight to more than double your effective health I struggled with normal Diablo because I was just trying to find health globes. Once I got the health regen it made most boss fights trivial. Just make sure you take an armor spell...

You are right about my gear. I have had bad luck in Hell and have not received an upgrade at all throughout Act 1. A lot of luck is involved with drops (obviously). Going into Act 2, I ha dRequired Level 26 gear! Not because I was keeping it for some stupid reason, but because I hadn't yet found any item to replace it (more int and vit).
Well, i also play wiz... i'm 60 an about to finish hell. I use RoF and blizz for dmg and diamond skin and teleport as cds... i also have force weapon and energy shield... when playing solo i really get my ass kicked but thats only because i never played solo. I have to friends i play with always and my build roxx...
I simply guess that the wizs weakness is the non-soloable factor. In groups shes performing great.
Wizard is a fun class, but it really is lacking, only saving grace is Venom Hydra.
Swapped my alt and main around, alt was Demon Hunter, a little less survivability on champ packs, but a looooot more dps.
Resource system pwns Arcane which even with Prodigy and Astral Presence burns out too quickly. DH has a great no CD CC break (Smoke screen, should have a CD on it imo)
I think they need to increase signature skill damage, as it's just simply too weak in every way compared to everything, or make RoF a signature. Doesn't matter if you use Chain Lightning or Piercing Orb, Bola Shot simply craps all over any signature, Hungering arrow > Magic missle,
Vault > Teleport, they need to remove the CD on teleport and change Wormhole rune. It shouldn't have any AP cost if it's going to have a massive CD (15 seconds is massive for an avoidance ability, especially considering comparing it to other classes)
Wizards catch up on DPS once you have Magic Weapon and Sparkflint familiar and Glass Cannon, 3 slots used just to keep up with other classes.
Kinda disappointed in this class right now, hopefully it'll prove me wrong when I have both it and DH at lvl 60. (In before omg ur not 60 and ur comparing, yes I am, other classes are all about even up to 20, maybe Barb a lil infront of Monk until 20)
I find its a balancing act, In Normal I could obviously do as I pleased and pretty much just melted faces for 30 hours. Now in NM it sa different story, there is no point having 5k DPS if a mob can vortex you in and 1 hit you so I am running with 6.5k HP and 1.1k DPS at the moment and am really enjoying the challenge of Nightmare. I'm level 40 BTW
The first inferno Diablo kill was with a wizard.. I can't see how he's underpowered.
Bosses hit very hard, but also relatively slow since its just one mob. This means that Energy Armor w/ Force Armor is super effective vs bosses. You can find Youtube videos of wizards tanking inferno bosses with 7k hp (less hp actually makes Force Armor even better). So for boss fights wizards are the strongest of all the classes. However that doesn't mean the wizard is amazing in every aspect of the game.
I'm not saying wizards are underpowered/overpowered. I'm just warning against making a judgement call based on boss kills because right now Force Armor makes wizards gods vs bosses.

This thread is now a joke.
a wizard soloed inferno with 6k hp?? is that a typo? its either that or it never got hit I suppose?
