Posted in Diablo News, Media, Blizzard on December 14th, 2006 Bill Roper and company are not alone anymore. Another team has left Blizzard, this time it’s guys working on WoW, not on Diablo II.
The new company is called RED 5 and consists mainly of World of Warcraft developers. They’ve managed to raise $18.5 million in funding, which is approximately half the money Vivendi says it needs to make a MMO. I guess keeping it small might be cheaper. Mark Kern, RED 5’s CEO, had these comments in a recent interview.
“We’re not really a PC company or a PlayStation or 360 company,” he said. “We’re really about building an MMO as a platform. Because you’ve got essentially what’s a supercomputer on the backend, the question for us as game makers is what to do with that. We’ve barely scratched the surface.”
“Our goal is to continue to build our team, and this funding allows us to do that while building that technology base that can be used across multiple games, too.
I’m still at a loss about what their specific game plan is. Are they developing a platform for other developers or just a normal game. Hopefully, it’s the latter. I’d like to see more good MMOs coming out.
During a presentation to Wall Street today, a company representative from Vivendi reportedly said, "All Blizzard franchises will become MMOGs." The rep said they have a model in place to produce an MMOG for $50 million over the next three years. http://www.medaverse.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1025

That sounds fishy at best. Words can be twisted around for one's purpose depending on how a person phrases it. Just to name an example, Swedish comedians clipped a speech made by our prime minister. What was originally a speech to the people became a plead from him to send all young girls to "take care of him".
Now that is strictly using what he says. Just turn interpretations by the reporter into the dough, and you can get anything.
Just my idea on what I think when someone says "all Blizzard games will be MMO." In my opinion, those rumors were originally started by people that have no idea of how you make money, and can't look beyond their own noses. But perhaps I've been proven wrong. However, it wouldn;t be the first time false information has been created on the net.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
it looked like the misunderstanding that was caused by the Vivendi game department a good while ago. Blizzard said that they wont concentrate on the MMO market and there will be alot single player titles out in the future.
Yeah, that came up lately. I do not know if it was this precise statement, but someone at Blizzard made a statement that all future games will be MMO's, upon which the WoW-community exploded in flames. Quickly thereafter Blizzard assured everybody that the statement was not true.
Honestly, I hope these articles refer to that precise event, that way we don't have to worry.
And seriously, three MMO's? I play more games than most people I know, and there is no way I could play World of Diablo/Starcraft while maintaining a WoW-account. Just not possible.

Possibly. But it doesn't suit a company to lie. Therefore they never say anything. But when someone slipped they had to do something.
And I think it is safe to assume that it simply isn't economically feasible to maintain two MMO's at the same time, for the sole reason that the fanbase isn't large enough to support it.

That is unless...they only tend to create MMO's for each fanbase. Maybe they're intention was to never mesh to three.

If you ever meet a hafling and a hungry dragon you dont have to outrun the dragon, you only have to outrun the hafling.
The problem is that a large part of the fan-base likes all teir games, and so will have to pick one. The other that WoW, I believe, appeals to a new audience unexperienced in computer games much more than Diablo ever could. So where WoW became a smash hit, WoD and WoS would not fare so well.

That is true...If I never played a computer game before and I see a game where you fight orcs and sorcs and all of that then I would go for WOW. Luckily I am stuck on Diablo
