Well, I was reading the thread: "Incorporating Reading of Lore into Quests" and thought that it would be interesting to incorporate some type of scavenger hunt into the game.
While the author of that thread wanted to make "caring" about the lore necessary to beat the game, I would suggest a completely UNNECESSARY
mini-game.
This mini-game doesn't need to include lore, but the reason for it COULD be derived from the lore. Ex: a witch needs something, or a bunch of NPC's have separate scavanger hunts.
The point of this is LIKE looting. This will get you to pay attention to your surroundings. You will go to a NPC, and he will say that he needs you to find materiials. YES, this is like an MMORPG, but don't start bitching, I beg you! This scavenger hunt wont be necessary in any way AT ALL, and it is something that should take you longer than a few weeks.
This will be a passive quest, meaning that while you fight monsters, there is a chance that this item will drop. There will be common ones, and extremely rare ones. Based on what the reward is, these items could be traded for loot. The easy items on the list could be found on low level monsters or standing on some random table in a cave.
The reward is up for discussion; it could be a random rare item, like a gamble. I think it could also be something permanent like 20 extra HP, or attributes, mana..etc
There could be more than one scavenger hunt, but this could add another dynamic to the game. Another special item that people look for like the "keys" in LOD, or Annie, or the other thing

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
I think that this would be a fun idea. But, the items would not need to be anything special. An NPC in town could say, "Fetch me 2 rare rings, a breast plate, a blue grim sheild, a cracked helm, and a rare corona. I'll make you something nice!!"
The result could be a higher end rare version of one of the items. If this method would potentially produce good stuff, then finding the required ingredients would be fun. Imagine it being a thrill to say, "Finally, a cracked helm!!"

Because thats supposedly what "hardcore" diablofans do..
(If anyone was on this forum or bnet forum long enough, you would understand that comment).

The "Cracked", "damaged", etc. terms goe away once you repair that specific item in Diablo II. I'd think it would be the same in Diablo III.
