Tested this myself with forensic video analysis. Basically put together a standardised set of gear to compare damage numbers.
After the massive nerf to the way Inarious procs Miranae and all
other on hit procs, I was looking for alternatives just for normal T13
and low rifts.
Basically in my tests I averaged 30.4 bn hits with miranae and 2.6 bn
hits with wreath of lightning (My Miranae is lvl 92 with 8520% damage
and my Wreath is 89 with 3475% damage)
Between my two gems the on sheet % damage difference is 2.451x so if i
hit about 30.4 bn with Miranae I should hit 12.41 bn with Wreath of
lightning with the exact same gear. Instead as listed above it was
around 2.6bn which is 4.773 times less than it should be.
Edit: For anyone interested in the numbers its aprox 728% damage per hit rather than 3475 at level 89
I know Wreath has been in this state for a while, however most people
trust the tooltip and don't realise its actually a Wreath of LIE -tning
(yes that was terrible lets move forward)
Just something I wanted to share. I think necros skill damage needs
to be rechecked, Inarious is meant to be the nova set as well as work
with the iron rose offhand but wow 450% damage for a skill is insanely
low. 18.9x less damage than one miranae smite
Hmm... I dont now if the method if ok to say that the damage is lower than it should, but I always thought that the damage of WoL is way to low. I beleave that it needs more testing, with diffrent aproches.
I thought it felt pretty "meh", in my testing honestly. If this is true, that definitely explains it haha. I've found that I still prefer Mirinae over some alternatives (WoL, BotP, and GoET) with some of my builds, even after the nerf.
I really really hope that they do something like changing the % chance on Mirinae and WoL to something like 30-45%. They would probably still only be used by Necro even then. Oh, and fix WoL damage apparently.
Thanks for posting this. I'll try to do some testing as well, but I can't say that this exactly surprises me just based on the way it "feels" to use it.
So you're saying that the [damage]% dealt is split between all the enemies hit? If that's the case why does it still seem like complete shit vs single-target? Shouldn't it be giving the whole % since only one target is being hit?
I feel like the wording on the gem is extremely poor if that's how it actually works. I also feel like the damage itself is completely awful if that's how it actually works. Literally the only benefit at that point is the move speed, because GoET is giving a pretty close equivalent to that amount of damage to all enemies while also reducing their damage and increasing your own damage.
It's way low because blizzard doesn't want a pocket conduit like the ROS beta had.
There is only one problem for me now. It got archon-Ed. Basically nearly all builds use land of the dead and corpse lance.
They might as as well make land of the dead into an aura and make the cool down 60 secs . Then you can spam all your corpse skills more frequently rather than. Aggro for 20 secs then do damage.

That's part of the reason I made the NovaLancer build - I actually hate Land of the Dead. I'm not saying it's not strong, just that I hate using it. I hate how completely lopsided it makes everything feel - "WOOO DAMAGE DIEDIE...aaaaand I'm back to shit damage..." I hate the gameplay that it promotes - nothing but running from elite to elite. I hate having to jump through endless hoops to do everything I can to mitigate the fact that it's such a long cooldown - I already had my fair share of that shit with Crusader a long time ago and have no desire to do it again.
This makes me wonder about Gem of Toxin - doesn't it always apply to every enemy hit for even one point of damage? Coefficients don't come in to play with Toxin right? You calc it's total damage divided by 10 for per second numbers.
Hello, thanks to everyone for the feedback here. Regarding gem of the toxin it does 1/10th of the damage per second divided into 0.5 second ticks on the target, displayed as white damage numbers not crits. Toxin is not affected by anything that increases poison SKILL damage, like Nayers black death. Basically the damage of toxin is a bit less than Wreath but hits far more consistently.
WoL has needed a buff/rework for a while now IMO. I only use it for speed on my DH builds, so leveling the gem past 25 is pointless for me. But it's not like DH needs the damage. A higher proc chance would be awesome.

Yeah that's why I'm saying that GoET seems significantly better than WoL if WoL's damage is divided by 5 - because at that point GoET's damage is just a little bit less than WoL per tick but 1) it hits all enemies, not just 5 at a time, and it's based purely on hitting them (not based on a chance) 2) it lasts more than 3 times as long 3) it increases all of the rest of your (and your allies') damage 4) it gives you mitigation.
If both gems are at level 80, WoL would be 650% damage per hit and GoET would be 600% damage per hit...
So literally you're getting... move speed? Outside of a speedfarming scenario, specifically, this just makes WoL seem like complete trash to me.
Yeah, dmg is split between enemies. You get 5 beams each time it proccs. So you get 700% instead of 3500%. And yes, single target dmg is shit. Otherwise it works fine if you kill elite with corpselance. trashmobs die fast enough with WoL gem so you can use them on elite.
Edit: I forgot to answer one question: No, on single target you do only the dmg of one beam. The other 4 beams are "invisible" cause there is no target to hit. Thats why you won't get the full dmg applied to one mob
It IS supposed to proc all beams on one target. However, the problem is that if there is one target it seems to have a "chance" to hit that single target with more than one beam on occasion. So, there is a possibility to get 2 beams on one target. I haven't seen x3 damage yet, but I didn't use it for an extended period of time. I wouldn't be surprised if the Blizzard team didn't feel like fixing the code on this gem or just rewording it to state what they intended it to do from the onset.
The tooltip for the legendary gem is very misleading:
15% chance on hit to gain a Wreath of Lightning, dealing 1250.0% weapon damage as Lightning every second to nearby enemies for 3 seconds.
#1 does not say it is split up, but we can tell that 5 beams /1250 seems to fit 250% as does its 25% increase in damage per rank (...such a terrible scalar) quite nicely. However, it is SUPPOSED to emulate a conduit pylon, which does not split up (4000% damage) it's damage against a single target or multiple targets.
#2 I mentioned conduit pylon because the range, destructible objects, damage intervals and element are all the same. What is strange is the way it operates in both single target and multi-target that makes the gem different from a conduit pylon and ultimately, a major drag. If it was capable of dealing its single target damage to that maximum effect it would be better....even more so if it did what the tooltip actually literally states.
well I was using this, but after reading all of this. I'll have to switch to something else =\
It depends on the build, if you can keep it procced somehow it is decent movement speed and it breaks items and objects to give you more speed bonuses, for damage its just not there though.
