Or, if you prefer, what games changed the way gaming is? Set a new standard?
Or even set a new standard, not for the industry but for how YOU see games?
I'm gonna go with an obvious one here: Kingdom Hearts 2, catagory: Best Told Story.
Ok, note that I didn't say 'best story', because in all honesty, I don't think the story was all that good. But they did tell it REALLY WELL. My sister was right when she said "Most games are fighting with cinematics, Kingdom Hearts is cinematics with a bit of fighting." Now, that doesn't mean the game is all cinematics, but if you skip all the cinematics, there are better games for you.
Probably Zelda ocarina of time, because it was the first game I've ever pasted. Man...I spent hours and hours on that game and I never got bored at all. Maybe someday, I will be able to play it once more.

I like the life I lived, because I went from negative to positive.
You know very well who you are, don't let them hold you down, reach for the stars.
I thought Doom was really groundbreaking for its time. Mostly just cause it was so underground yet so popular at the same time and was totally politically incorrect.

GRRR! You stole mine:(.
Anyway I'd have to go with Donkey Kong, Pacman, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart...um...I have some others, but I'm gonna give other people a chance too:D.
You folks should be sure to go into what you think it was about those games that changed either gaming for you or the industry itself. However, I'm more personally interested in hearing ideas on how a specific game changed or shaped the gaming industry.
-Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, fully show cased what was possible with the N64, plus it was an awesome game
-Diablo, Defined the Hack and slash game, best game in '96
-Baldur's Gate, revolutionized the RPG genre
-Super Mario 64, much like LOZ: OOT, but it came out first.
-Starcraft, RTS at its finest
uh.. Heroes of Might and Magic
Pong
Asteroids
Tetris
Donkey Kong (with Jumpman aka Mario)
how badass were these games when they first came out? honestly?

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

Okay I'll justify them.
Donkey Kong= the plumbers origination and without that, gaming just wouldn't really be what it is today. Because Mario is the symbol of video games.
Pacman= It made the gaming industry alot more popular.
Super Mario 64= The best 3d platformer, and now (should) set the standard for them and to my knowledge has never been beaten.
Mario Kart= It was the first of the racing games with items and split the racing industry into, items and normal racing. Now is the best racing series of all time.

We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.

If a game spawns clones, it means it's good and I should try it, duh.
No it just means it's popular for one reason or another. They are usually not first with the idea, but second and third. Doom spawned clones and I think it's an awful game...
In other words, cloning is not a reason to like a game. It only means that the game got popular so the other game companies became interested in fussing with it...
Well, there are a lot og games that became popular because they are good, or they were good w/o being popular. Other games are bad and popular, as you said.
With old, (or new) revolutionary games, I think that the first is the most common. however, a lot of good games (Kingdon Hearts, SSB) have never been properly emulated, despite many tries. I think trying to make universal rules about gaming is about as likely to suceed as making universal laws for English.
Clones are not contributions. Clones are pieces of crap that crowd original games like heXen out so we end up with all these 50 crappy FPS games that are all copies of each other. How many sci-fi games we had with the storyline "Lab experiments/alien invasion"? How many fantasy RPG we have overloaded with all the elves and dwarves?
Games that are original can be counted with the fingers of a hand. And I think that's a very bad thing, not a good thing at all.

StarCraft is my sci-fi standard...
Gameplay wise, I dunno... I like original games so I kinda don't like standartised gameplay.
To find the truth, you must risk everything.
