Rebirth allows you to start a new Season by starting over with one of your existing characters
During the Season, the character will behave like a new one but you will maintain the old character records
When a Season ends, all your old gear from before the Rebirth will be mailed to you
Is there a benefit to this like character portrait/wings/pet or something? Otherwise what's the point? Why would you want to reset mid season and put yourself behind permanently for the rest of the season?

Umm, what? It is all about turning non seasonal char into seasonal char instead of making new one. You are not putting youself behing permanently for the rest of the season if you want to make new char and enter season.
Gives botters a way to hide their stats, before you could tell oh hey this guy played 300 hours since season 5 while season 5 been live for exactly 300 hours.
Guess they don't want us to do a witch hunt anymore.

Now we can simply return to baseless accusations based on paragon levels, the way blizzard intended.
Bet they will cap it at 800 or either botters will level so fast it becomes super obvious for blizzard to instantly ban them.
so i will rebirth a char from, let's say, season 1. if i had one of those. he has gear on him. okay. now we picture the end of season 5:
- all the gear i found and stored in the new tabs will be mailed to my non-seasonal.
- the gear from the rebirthed char is being put on said pile.
- i no longer lose the accumulated things like playtime on a character, but since i already deleted some old ones i lost those anyway.
- i still have to sit a long time to sort everything in my stash out.
you know, i always disliked the mail feature. or the space management. i have rather neatly organized stashes throught season and non-season with items for different builds, items for fun builds or simply want to try some tactics in non-season and maybe lose a char. which i then do not care about, since the season char is still intact.
but you always get that big chunk of items mailed. all my chars act like mules and i have two chars full of one-slot items like jewelry or belts. i'd like to "update" my old inventory with new-found items from the last season. there is just no feasible way to do that. so i pile on and on, disenchant many items and ultimately delete two to three chars to make place for a new season. i guess that last part won't be relevant with the rebirth feature, but the mass of overlapping items will still be. more stash tabs or not, which is a lame way to try and fix the storage problems.

Yeah i think it's basically about not having to delete a character and making stash space and shit.

You continue to increase stats on one character during season like elite kills, hours played, bloodshards collected etc.
Yes it is really pointless.

extra point i rather make : a nice 6p set to end the season
