i dont undertand this, they released most of the information in 1 year, and ignored the biggest complaints from the community, even mocked us by making the diablo "rainbow shirt", everyone was complaining then bashiok comes by and says a few words, and the idiots who post in the blizz forums agree and say it is ok for them to announce a game 3-4 yaers prior to release...
it is not a marketing strategy either, because they dont need 3 years of advertising the game to make it popular, just like they made commercials for wow all they need is one commercial for d3 and it will catch on
I'm just venting some frustration, what are some of your thoughts guys?
Well in my opinion they aren't advertising the game. You don't see ads in Game Informer about D3. What you do see is updates and progress. Theres no way they would be working on it for this long and not announce it. Nothing wrong with letting the fans know there is something to look forward too.
I think the main reason for them announcing it early was to kind of keep the attention of diablo fans. I'm pretty sure there were countless people hoping for a diablo 3, but was almost positive it wasn't going to be. Maybe they just felt like it would be nice to announce Diablo 3 and of course to get some feed back. Which makes me laugh when people insult their progress and all. And D3 was in Game Informer.
Also there is more strategy than you'd think market wise. I'm sure some old Diablo 2 fans either gave away or lost their game, but when hearing the news about Diablo 3, wanted to buy another copy. I'm pretty sure they were considering this, seeing how they doubled the price of the Battle Chest...
To be honest, I still think D3 is under the radar for most gamers unless you are a die heard blizzard or diablo fan. I have talked to other gamers and they are like "what? D3?". They may have announced that they are making it but they really haven't made it that big of a deal to the general public. We, as huge diablo fans, happen to be in the eye of the storm. We see and hear everything diablo related. Not to mention how bad all of us, as fans, want this game and makes it that much harder. I don't think blizzard is doing anything any other company, gaming or otherwise, is doing anything different or wrong. Look at the movie industry. Peoplefind out about movies before the script is written, casting, and shooting. We just all want it so bad it feels like torture somtimes waiting for D3.

It's been in multiple magazines. In fact it was in Game Informer last month.
I think if you haven't heard about it at this point, you just don't care about new games unless you've already played the prequels.
I read it too but have you talked to anyone who is not a huge diablo fan. A two page article is big but compared to the coverage of higher profile games, it might get overlooked. I just think to most gamers, besides dfans, it probably doesn't seem so bad.

Well. I look at pretty much every game in the Game Informer, so I know I'd notice it. Of course I think a good majority of gamers don't even look at magazines or anything.
The ONLY games I hear about around here are COD, Halo, FPS typed games.

Actually, it is a marketing strategy in a way. They have 2 games coming out in 2010; WoW: Cataclysm and SC2. They don't want to release D3 in the same year as those other two because it would over shadow them and they most likely wouldn't sell a lot of copies for WoW:C and SC2.

Before you categorize this as "advertising", i urge you to read over marketing 101, because you've got it all wrong buddy. This ain't advertising, its building the hype. If you look at how firms in general release new products, this isn't any different my friend. Firstly, blizzard needs us. They need us for concept testing, prototypes, idea generation and all that stuff. Then they need to consistently screen most of what they produce to make sure it fits in well with corporate strategy and the game in general. I read a post by Bashiok saying that the reason why they announced it so early was to take us on for the ride!!
You're all true fans. You're posting in a forum, a lot of you daily or at least weekly for a game that most of you already expected was at least a year away. You're the passionate core of our community. Don't lose sight of that.
We're working hard to make a great game - and we announce as early as we do because we want you along for the ride. It's important for us to show all of you what we're working on and see what you think. It's integral to the development process. We can't just work in a vacuum, in a lot of ways we depend on you to let us know what's up so we can make a game that we're sure everyone is going to love.
So ... we got a little time. We still got plenty to show. Grab a chair. Stay a while.
Most people are interested not only in the final outcome of the game but its development process, so take your pragmatism somewhere else!! No offense intended

It's very cruel they announced so soon though.
