This game is so ancient it was around before windows 95.
I haven't done it in so long, so I can't help you any further than that. You will need to get into DOS.
Damn. Been a while. try the command prompt thingy.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

works fine on a windows 98 machine. but with the current hardware there should be problems. last time i installed it was on a Pentium II at 400MHz with 256mb ram
My memory is actually pretty fuzzy on what happened.
I do remember it crashing a few times after I first installed it, but I also know I initially tried to start the game from Windows.
It's very likely I realized that mistake and tried it from DOS, and my recollection of "giving up" may have been from boredom, since I had already been playing WarCraft II off and on for several years by the time I purchased the battle chest that included Orcs and Humans.
Just thought I'd throw in a little help guide to all you Warcraft fans. I actually got this working a couple of months ago.
What you need is a DOS emulator called DOSBox which you can download here: http://www.dosbox.com/
Once you got that installed you need to create a directory that will serve as your "virtual DOS drive" (Example C:\DOS).
You obviously need the game files now (from the CD).
Now unzip your Warcraft 1 files into the DOS directory so the path name looks like this:
C:\DOS\warcraft (or whatever you want it to be).
K now you need to load up DOSBox and there's just a few commands to get it started (ah memories).
1. First mount your directory to become the C drive - "mount c: C:\DOS" in my example
2. Change to the mounted drive - "c:" (you will now be in C:\DOS)
3. Change to your warcraft directory - "cd warcraft"
4. Now I think you do have to run setup before playing the game - make sure your soundcard works (I think picking SoundBlaster 16 is what I used).
NOTE: I don't think that the cd music will work... I could be wrong because I'm writing this all from memory.
5. After setup type "war.exe" and the game should start right up!
6. When you are done playing and you "Quit to DOS" just type "exit" to close the console.
Couple of Notes:
I've used this emulator to play Warcraft 2 as well. I'm sure DOOM and Heretic/Hexen will work using this method.
One thing about Warcraft 1 - THERE IS NO (RIGHT) CLICK TO MOVE!!! (you have to click the move icon first or press the M key then select a location) - Don't freak out it just takes some getting used to - the game is still awesome tho!
That should be everything hope you enjoy the game!
Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.

Will it even run on today's systems?

When I tried playing it on my vista pc,
I thought that it might've been gone for good.
Anyone here who still plays?
and does anyone know if it is possible to get the multi player working when running it with DOS-Box??
You've gotta love this classic..
Damn you Blizzard for not selling it anymore! Come on, not even an online purchase option?!? Bastards.
