In diablo3 Blizzard could integrate something like this into your b.net profile or similar, apply special visuals to your character and so on, would be very cool.
I just hope there's at least some kind of reward in pvp, being the best without any visible achievement sucks ^^
Here's an idea: at the end of the match, if you won, you can open a golden chest with an item level equals to the average level of the opposite team. You can't fight tbe same team more than once a day to prevent abuse.
Well actually, you can't prevent abuse so scrap that.

Agreed, although the timer is not a bad idea. See, here's the thing that I do not like about items spawning in PvP (and this does not include a wager system where you get another person's gold/items from winning) - when you're doing PvE, items spawn randomly. Sometimes you get a good item, sometimes you get an okay item, sometimes trash items, and most of the time you get no item. There are no guarantees in Diablo! But imagine if in PvP, you were guaranteed an item for winning in the arena. That seems like a MUCH easier way to find items. Now, if it were set so that items dropped at an equal or lower percentage to monsters in PvE, that might be a different story, but there really should not be any guaranteed rewards for winning in the arena because there are not any guaranteed rewards for winning battles in PvE.
I think an interesting way to do matchmaking and wagers in PvP is this:
Form your team, and select the item/items your team wants to wager. Also, you select item types and/or stats that you will accept from opponents. Then, through a wager/match GUI, other teams can search through the list of wagered items, and challenge the team who has items they're willing to fight for.
So basically, the most elite teams will rise to the top quickly, acquiring better and better items. So having top-end gear will basically force the best PvP teams to constantly fight each other, because all the best gear will be won by the best teams.
But other teams might have a good crafter/grinder who pumps out awesome gear from PvE.. Those teams can then put up stakes that are attractive enough to fight the best teams. So you'd have these leet, champion teams who would be constantly challenged by new teams.
That would freaking rock, imo.

That's what I was thinking too. The "hosting" team get to choose if they accept the item of the team that found them in the wagered item list.
But there is a problem, people can look the stats of the host/joiner and choose to not battle anything tougher. That wouldn't happen with automatic matchmaking.
item wagers wouldnt work imo. Following conditions should be met for1v1 wager match..
Both players must assert their chance of winning equally i.e 50 50. PlayerA wont accept a gem for his legendary just cus his opponent thinks PlayerA has more chance of winning.
Perceived item worth must be the same, perceived skill and chance of winning must be the same and lastly both players must actually have an item that the other player will accept as wages for their item.
Random chest wont work too if you stop to think about pvp being vanity reward only, balance of what chest contains vs pve, who out of the team gets an item..
Gold wagering sounds awesome and would work on every level. In d2 dead players dropped unstashed gold anyways. Assuming in d3 gold will be more usefull wager matches like there could be very popular and give extra incentive to win.
Theres no need for those silly conditions. The player that accept a waged match against certain person is accepting the risk of loosing. Theres no reason to try to balance anything. Ppl have to learn how to choose their oponenets. Loose is a part of the game.
I suggest you read FoxBatD2's post and then read mine again. And "gay?" Really?
Ok, read both of your posts again, and my statement still stays, Unlocking pvp arenas is lame, for a magnitude of reasons Im not going to bother to explain, and so what if people make a living off of PVP ? which may or may not be the case, first of all if your playing against players who truly do suck, your not going to win that much gold are you?, because they either wont have it, or wont wager that much,
and no matter how good you are eventually you WILL lose, so there is actually more risk in making a living off of PVP than PVE, so where is the problem? my statements stay, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH WAGERING GOLD IN PVP.
Worse comes to worse if it does become a problem( which for explained reasons I don't see happening) and PVPers can just go buy the best gear Diablo 3 has to offer with the gold they won wagering, you can give them PVP money that they can only spend on certain things at the PVP shop.
There, not only did I explain why its not a problem, I explained a solution for it on the off set chance that it is a problem.
I don't see how you expect this. From Blizzard's PoV the point of no item PvP rewards isn't to control the economy or something. It's to completely stop PvP progression, and force you to PvE for your stat upgrades. Letting better players get rich off of worse ones is still offering them progression. You might argue that it's dumb, but then you'd be taking it head on at least. Trying to sidestep like this won't get anywhere.
If that is the case then I guess it wouldn't matter. I'm just curious, what makes you think that Blizzard is trying to stop PvP progression entirely? I guess I could understand Blizzard wanting to keep PvE and PvP as separate as possible like that. However, if that's the case I don't see what would be wrong with rewards in PvP that have nothing to do with PvE, like access to new PvP arenas.
Also keep in mind that the reward gear from PVP can have stats tailored to PVP only. As much as I hate to face the wrath of using WoW as a comparison - the PVP gear you attained through rewards did you very little good at regular raids and boss encounters. If you want to do anything PVE, my bet is you will have to find regular gear and not PVP gear that you may have earned through a reward system.
And @ Dolaiim & Blitzer:
I think wagering is a GREAT idea and would be about the only thing that would motivate me to PVP. I hate PVP and rewards of titles or achievements that grant no reward other than bragging rights is boring to me.

Hey I agree, I have no problem with gold wagering for PvP and I suggested a way of doing this on page 1. I was responding to FoxBatD2's post, where he states that he does not believe that Blizzard wants ANY kind of PvP progression. This is why I suggested unlocking arenas, because it is one of the few things that I could think of that would offer rewards for playing and winning in PvP that would not allow progression in PvE or affect it in any way.

I think the lust for good gear would drive people to challenge stronger teams.. But if not, it's certainly possible for the PvP Wager GUI to hide the actual teams from each other, so you never know who you're gonna fight until you agree to the wager. Could add some serious adrenaline to PvP.. whereas automatic matchmaking (which I support), would be a safer option for teams still building their skills.

All I know is my question was asked to the man himself, Jay Wilson about wagers and he said they liked it. Well it was really a "yes", don't know if that's a "they thought about it" or "Yes it's going to be in the game". But w.e still cool that it was brought up in Sixen's interview. Put a big smile on my face.
Q: Any thoughts about a wagering system for PvP?
Micah: (Side stage)Yes
A: Apparently Micah is all for it. If there was ever a way we could make it into an e-sport, which is exactly what we don’t want to do, no not really. And that is the reason why. We know people are going to want to turn it into an e-sport but it won’t be from any encouragement from us. The big reason being is that we are never going to allow, or at least over my dead body, the PvP game to wag the tail on game balance. We want the PvE game to rule it. Even the amount that PvP can alter the PvE game in WoW is unacceptable to us. Whenever we run into a case where “this would be really awesome for PvE” and the PvP guys says “ that kind of screw PvP” the answer is always “shut up PvP guy, it’s awesome in PvE”.

I think, having titles and achievements in pvp would be some nice addition.
e.g.
Last Hope
In Clan Arena, frag 3 or more opposing players to win the round, when you're the last alive.
Example how it is done in quakelive: http://www.quakelive.com/#!profile/awards/fragdieb
