It seems blizz is justifying a lot of gameplay decisions based on their vision of Diablo 3 as being a "casual" "coop" game.
I've heard they aren't going to worry too much about balancing classes because they don't intend for it to be an e-sport.
And this was Bashiok's response to someone who said "My 6 year old brother will be competitive at this game"...
"It's a co-op game. What exactly are you expecting people to compete over? And I'm guessing you didn't play Diablo II."
I also heard that even though there will be a PvP component to the game... it also wont be very serious. There wont be any sort of standings or ways of evaluating/comparing yourself...
Are they just being lazy? Why not balance the classes? Why make it so casual? Why not make it more competitive?
I think their goal is to make a game that can be picked up and played at any time, by any one, and for the one-word description coming from any player's mouth to be "Fun!"... But for me a "coop"-Diablo that is nearly void of competition (that my 6 year old brother, or any fool with ample cash to blow on the auction house, can beat me at) sounds a whole lot less fun.
I want to know what all my hard work/fun/time spent has earned me. I want to know how I stack up against others. I want to know if the players I just lost to in PvP bought all of their items with real money (Which by the way is entirely possible now that blizz is doing all the transactions). I want a Diablo that is viable as an e-sport.
To me the competition is what makes things "fun". Its what drives me to want more loot.
I am going to play regardless of what form Diablo takes on... But for how long, and with what level of enjoyment remains to be seen. I just hope blizz is making all the best decisions by keeping all of our interests in mind, and not just blindly following some vision and the dollar bill.
That just looked like a thiny veiled rant with some question marks (mostly rhetorical questions at that) and as such wasn't worth an actual reply. If you could whittle it down a bit and shave off some angst with an edit i'll grace you with something better in return.
Casual actually translates into "we want a bigger audience than before to play".
If you want the mass to play a game you need to make some things a bit less complicated. The reason for this is because a casual gamer, which is a gamer that spends just a couple of hours a week, doesn't have the time, patience nor will to learn all the skill trees, all the variations and have a high learning curve on the game. The game will quickly be a headache and not a relaxing, fun hobby.
So you simplify a game (and please don't interpret the word simplify as something negative) in order to attract more players.
Blizard aren't lazy, they just want more people to play their games. Specially the people that only spends a couple of hours a week which is a huge customer base.
That is why I think Diablo 3 now has less customizations, the lack of skill tree etc and also imo is a way for them to have a game that can translate into console (again, this doesn't mean it's a bad thing). I mean, they are game designers and software engineers so of course they have considered the game design from a console perspective as well.
That was a lot of :words: just to say "I haven't watched any of the Jay videos and i'm now going to make poor speculations about game design that I don't understand."
To me the competition is what makes things "fun". Its what drives me to want more loot.
Than quite simply you need to look elsewhere. There are many games out there that do "e-sport" much better than any Diablo game ever has, add that to the developer forwardly proclaiming that they have no interest in Diablo going down the road of an "e-sport," I would imagine you time would be better spent on a true competitive game

Stop trolling and read what he wrote. He's not exactly wrong. Blizzard is a business and they want to make money so they do what he wrote. Whether you like it or not, his speculations are true IMO.
I read what he wrote. I also read what you wrote. Neither one of you have a grip on blizzard's business model (lol?) or seem to have the first clue about what's been reported on since the first of august.
The RMAH was created to satisfy a customer desire and likely pressure black-markets out of the running in that regard. If blizzard wanted to cash in, they'd have a % fee and get all kinds of dough from big ticket items. Fortunately for us, they're not doing that and the fees are flat.
Firstly... No I'm not going to edit my post proletaria, because I don't desire to be be "graced" by your reply. Yes, I did just state some of my my opinions hoping to get a response from others with theirs. Apparently your opinion has nothing to do with diablo.
So thank you baso80!
I understand what you're saying about a whole new audience being catered to... But can't they make a game that caters to both the casual and hardcore gamer? I think so... I think they could do all the things that I stated, and still accomplish their goal of acquiring new players.
I don't think competitive necessarily implies complicated. The learning curve need not be steep for a game to have a wide spectrum of player skill levels. A new player could be having the same level of fun, and never realize that there are players multiple skill levels above them. A new player isn't going to care, or even notice, if the classes aren't balanced. They might not care how they rank in PvP either... But its not going to hurt their fun-factor at all if blizzard properly implements these things for those of us that do care.
I guess to sum it up.... I think they can make a game that on the ground level is fun to play with friends for anyone, but that is also very deep and polished in other aspects of the game that the casual gamer doesn't care about. So cater to the hardcore gamers wherever possible, and all the casual gamers can remain casual and oblivious to what other layers Diablo offers, or some day transition to be a hardcore gamer themselves.
I hope that made sense. And to anyone who is more concerned about critiquing my language/grammar/approach, don't worry about posting that type of reply. It's a waste of your time.
I gotta agree with your point, but even though I feel the same way, I think I'm just accustomed to a certain style and could be biased. At least I can realize that right?
Anyway, keeping it more casual and less hardcore doesn't seem attractive to us. I'll throw out an uneducated guess that you're twenty-something years old. We grew up when game developers could really go out on a limb and get creative, and make that game that will only be received by X amount of people, or TYPE of people. You and I are a very small minority and you know what, even though I might share some similar opinions as you, I always feel so 'old' and 'conservative'. Like that old man who complains about young hooligans these days. "maaaaahhhhh, back in my day we'd teach a young whippa' snappa' a lesson for wearin' shorts below his waist like that! Kids and their music..."
Like an old guy who resents change because it's not what he's used to, I have stated opinions similar to yours my friend. But games are changing, because EVERYONE plays games. Call of Duty is so 'pick-up and play', the whole concept of a console is 'pick-up-and-play'! Some girls are 'pick-up-and-play". And McDonalds is 'pick-up-and-play".
I think I'm rambling. Anyway, I see your point. It's different than D1 and D2, definitely. But stay excited man, I have a good feeling D3 will be epically fun and I think it will surprise both of us man.
To me the competition is what makes things "fun". Its what drives me to want more loot.
Than quite simply you need to look elsewhere. Do we know why they are so intent on not making the game a viable e-sport? This is why I figured they might just be being lazy...
They could reach a new audience with this game AND make it an e-sport (Which also makes the game deeper/better). But that would definitely be more work, and they can probably grab the same number of players regardless with this "casual" game. So why do all that extra work right? If they figure they'll make the same money anyways.
So when they justify leaving out portions of the game because it is not part of their "vision", are they really just being lazy but obviously don't want to say that? (lazy=savvy from a business perspective I suppose :P)
You know, I kinda like the PvP in Diablo 3. The fact that its removed, I mean. It forms its own separate entity, and it has always felt disjointed in the other games.
The problem I think is, the Diablo series are story driven games, first and foremost. The majority of the game is built around getting from act to act, and then from difficulty to difficulty. That is what Blizzard is focusing on. So, skills will probably be tweaked, but with Single Player in mind, and I think the arena will be on the back burners. They probably might change some huge imbalances that does crop up in PvP, but I highly doubt that they will fine tune it, because making the story part fun and as enjoyable as possible is their priority.
The PvP aspect has always felt like a method of testing your gear and build against others. But you still need to go into Normal, Nightmare and Hell to achieve this. The PvP takes a back seat to the larger scope of the game, the questing aspect. I am perfectly fine with this, I've never PvPed in Diablo, but I do feel for the people who did, and expected something more from the game.
There might still be something in the future, some extra modes, or the likes for PvP. There is a lot of potential there and they can probably do a lot with the PvP Arena. However, I don't think it will become super competitive, or an e-sport. And that will always be due to Blizzard taking focusing on telling as a great a story as they can in the world of Sanctuary, while the competitive side of the game sits and watches from the sidelines.
I don't really think the game will be as casual as you think.
They have stated that Hell would be insanely challenging. And then there's Inferno, which we're still waiting to hear about. The game will bring a lot of challenge to the forefront and Diablo has always had the moto 'easy to pickup, hard to master' and I believe that would be just as relevant when Diablo 3 finally ships.
PvP will still be the place to test your own skills and how well you set up your character. Previously in PvP you ran up to a character and smacked one another, or exited town where a bunch of guys went mad on one another. At least now, with the Arena, Blizzard has given it a direction and focus. If they add modes, I'm sure it would get better.
I really don't understand this "catering to the casual market" argument at all. I think even "casual" players want goals to achieve, and enjoy a sense of accomplishment when they achieve them.
Therefore, from a PvP perspective or not, I don't see how dumbing a game down to a state where everyone is essentially on the same level in their gameplay because it's so damn easy will do anything but make people get bored with the game faster. I also don't understand how having a ranking system will drive "casuals" away. People enjoy having goals to reach (even if they're potentially unobtainable.) That's the nature of this game genre and what adds to it's flavor. I would think having a ranking system would encourage "casuals" to strive to get better. Eventually mindless zerging will get old to anyone. Then what happens?

To Jay Wilson and everyone else: Diablo 3 can be competitive without being an E-Sport.
Blizzard never stated that their aim is to make the game easier than D2, probably just the opposite. A lot of people seem to just equate casual with easy, but if you actually read interview and so on you'd know that what they mean with casual is the ability to play it in smaller chunks of time and still be able to progress, just like the other Diablo games.
That Blizzard aims for "easy to learn hard to master" is not exactly new and Diablo 2 was't exactly that complex of a game.
No, this is EXACTLY the point that Jay Wilson was trying to make in his interview on PvP. I.e. no competition encouragement, no balance whatsoever, no rewards which equates to mindless zerg pvp. Ugh. Sounds horrible. So disappointing.

Yes, we do. Jay has said many times that they want PvE to be the driving force and they don't want any PvP balancing to impact that.
They are not being lazy (which seems a really stupid assumption), and suddenly switching gears and making an e-sport balanced PvP experience would like require gutting a lot of skills/rune combinations which are just too imbalanced versus other players *and* coming up with a lot more PvP content, very likely pushing the game back substantially.
Also, saying they are "leaving out portions of the game" implies those parts were actually in the game or planning in some form which there is no indication of, despite some players wishing it so.
Then maybe you could explain how balancing the classes for PvP totally screws up the PvE balance. I'm just thinking about this in very simple terms, cuz I haven't read about this before... but to me if all classes are equally good at killing each other, then they should all be equally good at killing monsters no?. Why would one class be exceptionally weak or strong in PvE if they are equal to all other classes in PvP? Unless their skill customization is lacking certain types of attacks, or alternatively benefiting from a unique style attack that is pointless in PvP but OP in PvE.
Yea... 'by leaving out parts' I just meant potential parts of the game. AKA my ideal Diablo. I wasn't saying they ever promised us anything.

There are rewards, titles and stuff for your banner. What do you want, gear for pvp? That would be stupid sice d3 is not a game about pvp. They said they would not allow pvp balance to control PvM.
I do wish they would add a little more competition though.
You guys either didn't play Diablo 2 or don't remember. How much support did Diablo 2 get from Blizzard? Did they balance anything or fix anything? No. They put a hotfix out which removed bugs or dupes for like a day and was hacked again, that is about all. The Diablo community created the PvP rules, they created the builds, they created PvP, they created everything, and they will again in Diablo 3 with or without Blizzards support. If you want ranked matches on Diablo 3 pvp then look up an online ladder, simple.

How about aesthetic features for your character (i.e. BLOODY EARS, SKULLS, BONES hanging) for, say, killing a great player in a 1v1 duel.
How about a title and ranking system rather than some half-assed title "that shows you've done a lot of pvp." Ugh. Disgustingly lazy.
How about a "winner takes all" arena where opponents put up gold or items for grabs.
How about some objective based PvP like capture the flag, defend the NPC, hoarde mode (a nice combination of competition and PvE where 2 teams would compete to hold off waves of monsters)
ETC ETC ETC I just thought of those in 2 minutes.
My god there are so many options and this game could be so amazing for both PvE and PvP. AHHHHH.

To Jay Wilson and everyone else: Diablo 3 can be competitive without being an E-Sport.
They don't want PvP to be a focus because PvP takes time and resources to balance. If you do it whereby you change the skill for both you get what happened to WoW - one minute a class is UP in PvP but OP in PvE and then they balance the PvP side and it now sucks in PvE. It happens because the games are different.
balancing PvE is simple as they can say *okay every class has to put out 10k damage over a minute*...
Now in PvP that doesn't work. Because the Monk's chip damage won't go toe-to-toe with the Barb's bigger hits. Even naked and just having them auto attack; its impossible to get them to kill each other at the same time.
Now that you have done that the Monk's dps in PvE is suddenly 20k instead of 10k per minute because it needed a nuke boost for PvP.
(this is a very bad example showing that balance can't be universal; it has too many factors which is WHY blizz had to choose; PvE or PvP focus. They went with PvE).
For the quadrillionth time we don't want razor edge balance at the expense of the PvE game. WE DON'T WANT THAT. IF POSSIBLE it would be nice to have PvP abilities separated from PvE if the imbalance is ridiculous, (Jay Wilson has stated that the system is already implemented to achieve this) but mainly we're simply asking for some FUN and RESPECTABLE PvP systems rather than the mindless zerg PvP that's in the game now.
Please stop using this argument!!!

Bottom line is I doubt PvP will be insanely unbalanced, every class will be viable with some holding advantages over others just like Diablo 2, not impossible to win however. Play the game how you want, there is a great PvM community and there is a great PvP community with online ladders and rankings. I fully expect Diablofans to have such a ladder and ranking and Diablo 3's own pvp section when the game releases. Only thing I ask for is 1v1 and duels mid PvM or in town, I don't want to have to leave game and make an arena to duel someone, that is just dumb.
