It's quite possible that the Three didn't rule Hell in Diablo 2, but still they weren't trapped in the mortal realm by the Soulstones since Diablo was able to return there with his still stuck on his forehead.
They simply fooled the lesser evil in kicking them out to trick the Angels and give them a reason to break the pact Mephisto made with the Council to stay away from the mortal world (since they don't control Hell anymore the demons will now be able to invade Sanctuary).
But that is what the soulstones were meant to do. I believe Tyrael only referred to act 4 as a forsaken realm, there is a hellforge but it may be called that for its demonic powers. It came off like a kind of limbo between heaven and hell. Pandemonium fortress, chaos sanctuary...
I just had a realization. In LoB Tyrael stops the warlord of blood from aligning with Belial. But the warlord of blood shows up later on under the control of Baal. Did tyrael steal him away from Horazon?
Yep, and when you destroy Mephisto's Soulstone, a lot of spirits are released from it as well and it was probably the case with Diablo's too.
You know what I think? I just rewatched the Terminator trilogy not so long ago and I believe that the Prime Evils' souls are just like the liquid terminator. Regardless of how much you fragment them it will always be able to rebuild itself, and that's how I think the Three will return. It seems that the destruction of the Soulstones served anything but to delay their return.
QTF, but I think that it could be possible that a Fake Tyrael who is actually Belial in disguise returns in D3.
Reclaim their throne? No offense but did you even play to D2? At the end of Act3, Diablo went in hell to announce the return of the Three and rally an endless army of demons to invade Sanctuary. Where do you think that all those demons came from in Act 5, there are even portals that lead to Hell in the different zones of the Act.
I don't believe that they wanted their Soulstones destroyed. I think they wanted to use the Worldstone's powers to enslave mankind and acquire the true power of the Nephalem so they could win the Great Conflict and destroy all creation.
The destruction of the Worldstone only delay the inevitable as a new generation of Nephalems is coming and you can be sure that the Three will find a way to possessed the strongest amongst them, one way or the other.
He could only rally the demons that remained loyal to him through the Dark Exile. How could he rally demons that weren't his? Most of Hell belongs to Azmodan and Belial. They need to destroy their soulstones in order to return to hell, they were trapped in the mortal realm. They knew that they couldn't take the full brunt of hell without softening it up a bit. Let the current regime of hell dwindle along with the angels and men in a great conflict. Then take control of hell and destroy what is left of creation. Its the best course of action. Why did Baal and Diablo leave Tyrael in the chamber? They could have slew him.
I think the prime evils wanted their soulstones destroyed so that they could return to hell and reclaim their throne. Before they returned to hell they needed to soften it up. What better way than to destroy the worldstone, unleashing a holy/unholy war between heaven and hell. When Belial and Azmodan were all but defeated they would make their return and become rulers of hell once again. I believe Tyrael tried to stop them but was overcome by corruption in the presence of two prime evils within tal rasha's tomb. He pretended to befriend you and led you to all of the prime evils and their soulstones in order to break them from the mortal realm. After killing baal Tyrael destroys the worldstone in order to set the plan into action. Tyrael is soon after banished to an icy tomb to spend all of eternity in a frozen sadness by the agrinis council.
Tyrael isn't belial. In Legacy of blood Tyrael stopped the rise of the warlord of blood. The warlord of blood is a consort of belial. That was in a time period while Diablo was in Aaranoch during Diablo 2(Lut Gholein). You first meet Tyrael in Aaranoch.
