What do Diablo 3 team think about making things clear and visible?

"We wanted to make it very bright because it has to be clean and very visible so players can see them, we wanted to make it visible because there is so much carnage going on, we wanted to make it bright and clear because gameplay is the king, we wanted to make it visible so you can see that because you are colour blind, we wanted to make them clear so you can focus on the game, we wanted to remove light radius so you can see beautiful art, we wanted to make it purple so that you can tell rare and unique items apart, we wanted to make it clear ..............................

Do they think Diablo fans can not seperate things in the game?

In D1 we couldn't even see dropped items so players missed a lot of dropped items. We couldn't see enemy's health and sometimes could see only our character thanks to light radius so that we couldn't see the environment (also in D2). What happened then? Was gameplay broken? Wasn't it fun? OFC yes, they were a lot of fun.

But if you make everything very visible, clean and bright then it will loose the most important thing in Diablo games. FEELING ! Yeah gameplay isn't the king, it's the feeling. Gameplay comes 2nd. There must be invisible, unseen, unknown, missed, messy things in Diablo games. Not clear and very visible things.

    So what's my last sentence?

I wanted to make it clear that D3 will fail if this direction stays.

    Edit: Polite way

We've seen that if the team behind great games had gone then the next game of series is being crap no matter the game's publisher company is the same. For example the last games of series Far Cry, Red Alert, Prince of Persia, Unreal Tournament, Age of Empires etc.

It's not the publisher, it's the devoleper creates games.

Nobody knew what the bosses were going to be. I even think that one or two classes weren't announced before the release.

Not 100% sure as at the time I didn't have a habit of visiting forums and news sites to get info on the upcoming games, having a shitty dialup connection.

Oh don't say that. I was playing age of empires 2 with dialup connection in "Zone" *

    * Zone was an online platform for Microsoft games like Battle.Net

I.......... adjusted them so I could see. :)

You didn't play Diablo 1 and have no idea what you're talking about.

I beat Diablo I at least 10 times. You don't know what are you talking about. I bet all my money that you don't face that shiny place in DI. Probably you just beat it one time and that's all. In fact i'm playing D1 even now and try to get all of missed randomised quests to complete them. Just a few left. The last time i beat it i had a great axe that reduces light radius and i could just see my character in Diablo's lair. I'm really serious about that.

    @Dimebog

That screenshot was just for showing the game. If they had choosen to show that shot without removing light radius, people wouldn't understand the game wasn't exist in that time.

I played Diablo I first in 1997 when i was 10 and i still can't forget the experience i had when i saw the butcher. I was just like, Oh shit, run run run run to level 1 :) Then i couldn't open his door for a day :D If i tell the truth i was scared. I was just 10 and in that time Diablo 1's graphics were one of the best and most realistic in pc games. Also it was not that pixelly because there were only 14" monitors :)

    Good old memories.

That environment isn't going for a gritty mood, it's going for an eerie mood. It invokes this mood better than any environment in either of the previous games. Expertly done.

Do you dislike something about DIII so far?

I don't think so. You would love even hellgate london if "Silicon and Synapse" made it.

This is what Bashiok's response to describe Diablo and Diablo II in four words or less.

    "Killing demons for loot"

So you can guess what's their thought about magic find or overall item find.

What's wrong with your gamma settings? :)

Also there is nowhere that shiny in D1. On that ss i guess there is no light radius and cursor is on king leoric so he have red outerline. Also there is huge arcane power that gives light to the room. That ss has to be taken from a modded D1 i think.

For your comments about Bill Roper, he wasn't the man behind Diablo and Diablo II. I don't mind his words about HG:L singleplayer. That game was not Diablo you know.

Those edited screenshots look good but it's not what i mean. It doesn't look like Diablo too. It's just dark but not gritty. This is what i want:

In wow forums someone made a thread and asked to describe Diablo I and Diablo 2 in four words or less.

    Bashok's reply:
    "Killing demons for loot. "

This explains everything about D3 team. They don't even know what is Diablo for. Also i don't think even they know where did the name "Diablo" come from.

Four curios players: It came from "Mount Diablo" in San Francisco and "Diablo" word in Spanish that means "Devil".

For example here's the line from D3 gameplay trailer.

"What in the hells is that" says a guard.

Bashiok said that there are lots of hells in Diablo universe. Yeah proabably it's like that but in mortal realm most of the people don't know that. In DI and DII, people ( other than tyreal, lazarus etc who knows the truth) use words Hell and Heaven. Even someone who knows the truth don't use that phrase beacuse of consuetude.

And there are lots of hells but "Hell" word is used to describe all of them. For example it's written Lords of Hell ( Diablo, Mephisto, Baal) in D1 manual and Lord of Hell in Legacy of Blood.

In fact mortal realm in Diablo games is no different than medieval ages of the real world. It's same. But the truth is different (there is no god in Diablo games). It's one of the reasons why Diablo I was scary and photorealistic. It was looking like some time in our world and we didn't know the truth until we got deep into the church. We've seen pentagrams, crosses etc. All made us wonder what's going on there... With great realistic, dark, gritty art style and creepy music it gave us Diablo feel.

I'm sorry mates but Diablo feel is something not releated to game's greatness. I hope someone from D3 team reads this post and realizes it's not about just gameplay.

Who did create Diablo series and made D1, D2, LOD?
    - David Brevik along with his friends Max and Erich Schaefer brothers.

Max had talken about DIII's art style. I wonder what would David and Erich say about the art style.

Maybe i don't like the art syle because i'm a Diablo fan. Not a blizzard fan. Also i don't like blizzard's games. (Warcraft series)

BTW it's really nonsense to bash creators of Diablo. We can talk about Diablo now because they created the franchise not Blizzard. Blizzard just published the games.

These screenshots from Diablo 2 which some of you call even brighter and peaceful than Diablo 3.

Good old art controversy huh? Hmm a while ago like a month, one of the real creators of Diablo franchise Max Schaefer said something like "yeah d3 has completely different style than previous Diablos but it looks great"

I don't think Bill Roper said something different." It's great but the style is different" is the summary of his words.

I agree with both of them too. Maybe D3 team can add a little bit darkness here and there, some light radius effect and it's done.

More importantly they have to make the game gritty. D3 at least has to be deteailed like Diablo 2 in 3D.

BTW health-orb mechanic is good but it adds arcade feel to the game. I have a great idea for that. Every fallen mob with soul give you soul power (with very small animation) that slowly translates to health if you could spare some soul power to heal your buddy. So what is the purpose of soul power then? It makes your skills and stats stronger... I think this is more gothic and i call this a feature :)

Think about it... Targeted unique mob has less health and you have really less health. What are you going to do? Do you want to increase your damage using soul power or do you want to heal? If you increase your damage you could kill the mob before it would or otherway it could kill you before. If you gain health, the fight could be longer and you would have more time.

The balance is Blizzard's business but i think this fits with Diablo universe. If you read the books also you could see something like soul power.
