Except that whether or not it looks lame or not is subjective and will differ from person to person. Blizzard isn't going to change the look of how bucklers sit on the arm of character models because they like the way they have it and think it looks good. Diablo 2 also had bucklers that were strapped to the forearm and had no handle.
Especially solo, a shield will probably slow you down more than anything.
Dual wielding, two handing, and sword and shield will all probably be viable. A shield doesn't really slow you down when fighting non-uniques, at least if they work like they do in past Diablo games where they die in a couple hits. Who knows, in Inferno it may be the preferred to sword and shield because of the block chance and the fact that their is no potion spam anymore and health globes may drop less in Inferno or something.
Personally I'll probably be making a whirlwind barb that has weapon switch between Weapon/Shield and heavy damage, especially if I can get something that is equivalent to a Stormshield.
I don't see how this is big news, or surprising anyone. All the classes in both Diablo and Diablo 2 could use shields. The only type of shield restriction is in Diablo 2 where there was a set of paladin only shields.
