posted a message on Building a new PC for Diablo 3. What specs should I shoot for?
If you're getting a PC for Diablo 3, do not get a PC yet, it would be stupid.

Regarding whoever said you can't go wrong with eVGA, that's pretty dumb to say. They are among the cheapest in quality and hence in price, which means the highestly likelyhood of something going wrong. After about 6-12 months of use I think it was, a video card I had had a cap blow on it, and since eVGA had like a short ass warrenty, it couldn't be replaced.

8800GT is one of the best buys right now. But it would be stupid to assume it could run Diablo 3 at high settings, especially if you consider high settings to be high resolution (above 1.5MegaPixels) with high anti-ailiasing, in which I would guarentee it would not be smooth.

CPU will probably not be too important considering it's a 3D game which emphisizes graphics, and doesn't have to deal too much with physics or ridiculously large armies. So any good deal now would probably be adequate (like the intel E8400).
Quad cores are overrated right now because they can't make use of 4 cores well, as opposed to dual cored CPUs. Dual core CPUs for now have much faster processing power, making them excellent. I suppose down the line quads will slip past them though, but eehh...

Damn only now did I realize satarcraft2s and Diablo3s overlap. Oh well they will have recording of both... why though has it been impossible for me to find SC2 panel discussion on youtube though? maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I think it was cancelled.

Easily available potions have always been a bad idea for action adventure games like this. It was just an old idea developped over time which was a cool feature back then. Nowadays, potion pumping just makes skill less important, and adds needless dumbness to a game. Many games now have self-healing, or even auto healing while not in combat. Why the hell should you waste your time buying or picking up cheap ass potions when the game designers can make it so you don't have to?
Another issue is PvP, especially low level PvP (i'm not talking D2 low level PvP which is.... different I suppose I'll say)... winners would result in who had the better, or the most potions.

Potions can (and perhaps should, considering the style of game) still exist in the game perhaps, but they need to have a unique role and not be overpowered or a waste of time for PvP or PvM.

I thought it was hilarious how most self-healing skills in diablo 2 was pretty stupid, most were even bad or useless by the end. Introducing skills which can effectively keep people healed without having to resort to the same old items (lifesteal, potions) would be really nice.

posted a message on Respecs: Yes or No
I do not see any reasons why a person should not be able to re-spec as much as they want. It's idiotic to force a player to wait an hour or a day or a year or 2 levels, or whatever before they can respec... it boils down to either wasting time not playing (for an arbitrary timer), or wasting time playing something you've done already.
I don't want to level up to level 600 20 separate times just to try out the various strategies of my favourite class, and see which I like the best, and which are stupidly underpowered.
having to try out 5 different character classes (before expansions) is by far more than enough grind/replayability a person ever has to endure.
Realize that even with full respeccing, a person still can't effectively change builds without getting different equipment... it still won't be too easy.
Forcing players to grind through a bunch of IDENTICAL boring quests and boring monsters they did 10 times already is not my idea of fun.

When a game is properly balanced, players will not all run the same builds! different skills will have different advantages on a team, and different advantages solo. Making re-speccing impossible doesn't prevent people from running cookie cutter builds anyway, it just makes them waste more time doing it.

posted a message on A few big inquiries/opinions
Firstly, what does removing skill tree have to do with luck and removing skill?
Secondly, how the hell is Diablo2 skill based? Some few skills are ever so slightly skill based, but it still all boils down to your level and equipment. Of course the rest of the skills in the game consist of either walking up to stuff and frantically clicking (sometimes in an organized manner, but hardly worht mentioning of "skill"), letting the character attack, nuke stuff, or create summons, the pinnacle of skill-less play. Invest a point in the wrong skill? oh too bad for you, go back to level 99 and try again.

I haven't played WoW, but isn't Wow's skill system semi-tree-based as well though?

Blizzard has mentioned that they want teamwork (and I assume or hope skill/strategy) to be an important factor for the game. Because of this, I could onyl assume that war cries or something like it will be, or is implemented. Don't get into a fuss so damn soon, the game is under developpment, meaning they are still adding features they planned, thinking of new features to add, and all sorts of things.

posted a message on No support for modding...
I'm sorry if I'm sayign some redundant things here, since I have not read everyone's posts.

Diablo is blizzard's non-modable type of game. They even said so in the diablo 3 panel discussion. They were not focusing on helping anyone with content such as mods, let alone map editors, due to the combination of fixed and random things in the game. When you make a game, you have to set limits... you can't try to implement every possible feature. One has to keep in mind the general design ideas of the game or game series, and follow that. For diablo's case, one of those ideas means staying with randomized dungeons and drops, with fixed titlesets, NPCs, and quests, and not spending another 6 months trying to implement a lousy scenario editor just because they can.

posted a message on Φ Graphics Discussion (New art style proposal to Blizzard)
It would be absolutely impossible to hand draw a game like Diablo 3, which has separate sprites for each weapon, armor piece, class, etc... the only reasons why it was done and doable in KOF is that 1. that style has been done before and it common for the genre 2. All the units have no extra customization on them, except perhaps different color scheme which isn't hard to do. They stay the same person with the same equipment.

2D games are more work if you want many customizations, such as different genders, different character sizes, different armor appearance, different weapon appearance, different skin color, etc.
In 3D, you can scale and distort previous models and textures quite easily, as well as replace textures on same models. Attack animations are based on 3D animation skeleton technology, so once applied on one humanoid model, it doesn't need to be done for all the others, because they have the same skeleton, and the model follows the skeleton.

Perhaps I explained it well enough, or perhaps I haven't, but there are ridiculous advantages in using final level 3D rendering.
2D games can still be excellent, but they are most useful in only specific situations, situations where appearance, customization, and dynamic content isn't as important. While I always loved the concept of 3D models in a pseudo 2D rendered environment for beauty, even that is become a problem now, due to the dynamic characteristics desired, such as - destroyable terrain, cover, shadows/lighting (which can still be done quite well in 2D), 3d explorable space (climbing, jumping, swimming), etc.

Especially with the lastest graphics technology which even offers graphical benefits over 2D, it would be very difficult to make modern dynamic, complex games with 2D rendering. Unless you want to sacrifice character customization, weapon graphics, armor graphics, dynamic enviroment, and probably some other stuff, one should not really desire a 2D-based game.

posted a message on D3 Graphics. Where's the love?!
    Quote from "VanCrackin" »
Agreed. Many of the complainers are idealizing D1 and D2, as well as acting illogical. Go back and play D2 act 1. It was boring and drab as Hell. Go and try to make yourself play through D1 again. It's pretty arcane, to say the least.

I love the look and I hope Blizzard doesn't sell out. Either way, the game will be immensely successful. Sure, some things could use a change. But the game is so early in alpha that complaints are unwarranted. Furthermore, you can change GAMMA and BRIGHTNESS in your video options!!!!

The graphics don't even look REMOTELY like WoW and yet people still draw the comparison because of...Color?! Hey guys, Katamari Damaci is so WoW its not even funny. So is TF2!!!! THEY HAVE BRIGHT COLORS!!

This community sounds like a bunch of spoiled brats. Really, it's disappointing to say the least.

I am so sick of seeing those pictures posted everywhere on these forums. Can a mod clean it up?
yeah. I liked the suggested change by eagle here okay, but it'd be fine without it too. Realize that changing the graphic colors and adding effects to make it look like that is probably really hard or almost impossible to do though...

It looks like they're fighting at night instead of day.
yeah I was about to say the same thing... it's not like you can always be playing at night, can you?

I have no quarrel with the current graphics, although a darker setting was proposed by someone which didn't look too bad... (neutral for change) it wasn't this one though.... this is completely desaturated and looks dumb because of that.

They did a pretty good job at making the game gloomy (grpahics and figuratively), and figuratively dark, as it is. I think just turning down color saturation and decreasing brightness and contrast does nothing for a game. It doesn't need to be PHYSICALLY dark for the game to feel dark...

posted a message on Character Creation?
considering it's a 3D game, and a pretty old feature, I'd say it's very likely they'd do that. with 2D engines, it can be difficult to get too many equipment and character graphics, so switching to 3D makes for much better customization.

    posted a message on Re-Specing
Not being able to re-spec was one of the stupidest things in Diablo 2 for me. Playing the game over again for 200 hours just to try another build in the same class is not my idea of fun... especailly only to realize that the build won't work well.

The only possible situation where I wouldn't utterly hate not being able to re-spec, is if all skill trees and strategies were very viable throughout the course of the game, as well as they all need to be balanced. As it is in Diablo2, many builds are just plain useless in hell difficulty, and mediocre ones maybe required important rare items to work well. Being able to get relevant items for strategies (in solo play) should be another important factor.

The girl is the downfall of Diablo 3. Starcraft Ghost was ruined by its protagonists, because one developer made a hot coffee modification of the game, and then the rest of the developers masturbated to it every chance they could, and then Blizzard had to hire Overseers to get everyone in line, but when developers continued to be aroused by the sight of Ghost, the game was scrapped. The same thing's going to happen with D3. It's inevitable. Just try to grab the hot coffee mod before everything comes crumbling to the ground.
Are you saying there was a mod made by blizz employees for Starcraft:Ghost which was sexual? (maybe there is, but I haven't heard of it) where's your proof?
Secondly, how do you know that the girl in Diablo3 trailer will be a main character in the game? or even be in it at all, aside form maybe something like cutscenes.
Even if such a mod came out afterwards by whoever makes such a thing, why would it be a problem if you are not the one exposed to it?
Starcraft:ghost wasn't even released, how oculd you say something like that ruined it? if any event like that actually happened, it was not the reason Ghost stopped developpment. Blizzard explained why they put the project on hold/cancelled it several times.

posted a message on Stupid computer...
Those ducts are a very common thing nowadays (although moreso for PCs, one wouldn't think there's much space to do something like that on a laptop).

No offense to you guys, but many people here are really not being very useful... they just seemed to be compelled to give their opinion on the situation even though they may have no good knowledge of the problem.

Random shutdowns are generally due to power supply problems or computer heat problems. For both of these, you need to have proper diagnosis done, which is a little more complicated than just opening something up and looking around.

Heat-wise, you just need to monitor the temperature of whatever you can. Most likely it's just the CPU, which usually have temperature sensors built in them, so it's just a matter of looking at the information via special software or the BIOS screen (special software is much better, since you can test under load). The problems could be numerous... the CPU could just be too hot for the heatsink/fans at normal operation (either because of bad design, or because it wasn't designed for extended periods of operation, or changed over time), a fan could be malfunctioning, or something could be obstructing flow. Ensure you have good space around where there are holes for fans in the computer, by using a stand, or whatever. You can also clean it, as been said, but that's not too likely of a problem. Malfunctioning fans aren't too hard to diagnose, since they are either noisy or aren't spinning. Usually even when they are noisy, they are still working to near, or full potential, just means they will fail soon. A replacement fan would not cost 30-70$. While the manufacteurer may have been annoying and made it require a proprietary fan, it would still likely be under 30$. If it wasn't proprietary, I don't see why it would, it's possible to get a fan for 3$ or more.
Oh, and on a side-note, fans don't have gears... they run on bearings, which are inaccessible, and generally don't get anything inside. Hairs or something could in theory tangle the blades, but I haven't really heard of that as a problem.
Another solution to the heat problem would be to underclock the CPU (assuming that's what's overheating), so that it doesn't run as hot. This solution is assuming ventilation isn't the problem though, obviously.

Power problem would be really hard to diagnose for an average person... as far as I know it would be required to be examined by a computer technician with proper tools. Generally speaking, I would not consider it to be a good buy. Sometimes it doesn't cost much, or anything, for that to be done though... only the actual repair, in which case you have nothing to loose. Even if it wasn't a power issue, you would learn what it is.

If it's still covered by warranty you can try that, but I assume you wouldn't be here if it was.

Ladder is supposed to reset periodically, so it should be expected, really. Once a year sounds okay, but considering how people want more legitimate situations, around every 6 months would probably be better.
