It is risky to sell them. Yes tbh I have experience once when I saw still selling my in-game item in some forums. When dealing things in forum you must always have a middleman or you can use a exchange platform to do the job.
It's always risky to sell items (or buy them) for real money; being in BETA doesn't make any real difference for that. The scammers are always around on both ends; you just have to avoid it or be very careful on who you deal with.

Like what I usually do when I dont deem trust worthy in dealing with a buyer, I always suggest to trade via a secured exchange platform like playerauctions since its one of the popular out there and tbh I always sell my orbs there.
I already played PoE and I must say that I like it, but tbh it is not better than D3. I love how they made their currency as the items, seems like a lot of players of PoE are selling their items for real-money. I was surprised while I was browsing a PoE forum marketplace, I saw that one orb can cost $!
I also play PoE and selling my item currency. For example we sell exalted orbs at softcore at around $7 - $9 :Thumbs Up:
and there are alot of sellers within PoE, I bet that it will increase when the open beta is finish.
