No clue. My guess is it's one of the Prime Evils soulstones. I don't think Baal's was ever destroyed?
It's waaaay to big for Baal's.
*cough... The Falling Star *cough...
I guess it could be. I always figured the star to be an angel though, still do after playing the beta. The blue lines on the side of the crater look very much like angel wings.
Or why the Hell is rasing, educating and preparing Leah for the End Days in the first place? So that Diablo can possess her or whatever? Diablo and Belial aren't getting along quite well to begin with... After you rescue Cain in the Beta, says:
Deckard Cain: Leah, you should not dismiss the signs so lightly. Do you not believe the evidence of your own eyes?
Leah: Horros have visited Tristram before and it endured.
Deckard Cain: But what of the texts? The Zakarum tomes warn of a falling star. The Horadric Scrolls spoke of the dead rising and the Lord of Lies. The Prophecy of the End Days says that at the end of all things, the first sign shall appear in the Heavens!
Leah: Yes, you’ve been telling me about the texts since I was eight years old, Uncle. I just don’t think we should read too much into them."
Obviously some parts of the dialogue are cut...
How did Cain have such knowledge?
The Lam Essen's Tome.
Remember what Jay said about Act 2 in D3?
Official Blizzard Quote:
Act two's a little bit more of an intrigue and deception-focused story, because Belial is in there.
Whichs brings up a lot of screwed continuity issues, like how could he be in two places at once?
Belial is THE LORD OF LIES. This could all be deception. They wouldn't be very good at their job if everyone knew exactly what they were up to now would it?
Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I haven't done a theory thread in....years. lol.

In act 4, after the first and second quest, it is revealed by Azael the angel that the entire event leading up to the destruction of the soul stone had been planned and that Tyrael and the Hero, were tricked. Who could have tricked them?
Izual. He took the credit for it after all, and the trickery he refers to is specifically fooling Heaven into thinking the soulstones did something different, during none of which Cain was even alive.
In Diablo 1, Cain had told the original hero, all of these rumors and that maybe he should dig deeper. If you'll notice, somehow, Cain was so knowledgeable about just about EVERYTHING. But, he was "a former Horadrim" so it was expected they would be so intelligent.
Right. Or he really was a former Horadrim, in which case it is reasonable.
Didn't this ever strike ANYBODY as odd? What would jamming the stone into his head accomplish? Who would do that? There's no reasonable explanation for it.
Obviously Diablo knew his spirit was capable of taking over the warrior if he could somehow get the stone inside of his head. Then he could do what he wanted with him. And magically he did, didn't he? How could they be so easily tricked?
The explanation is that Diablo chose Aidan as his new host and destroyed his mind as he ventured down into the labyrinth. Perhaps this possession was as flawed as the host Leoric would have made had Diablo stuck with his original plan, but in either case it still reasonably easy to explain given lore from just D1. And as easlier pointed out, Cain never suggests such a course of action in any case.
I'll tell you how! Cain is Belial. The Lord of Lies. If you read one of our recent articles, it shows a few pages from 'The Book of CAIN'. In there, is an in depth description of the entire universe and how it had all began. How did Cain have such knowledge? Did the Horadrim really have information like that? What's more likely? That, or maybe Cain was not who he says he is.
Of Blizzard wanted to add anice touch to such a publication
And remember, Cain did not go with the hero from Diablo 1 after he left left. He stayed back. And what happened? By some miraculous chance, he conveniently got together with who? The hero that just HAPPENS to once again be going after Diablo and continuing the quest to destroy the soulstone that was set out in the very beginning. What are the odds that Cain just happens to run into both hero's linked in this journey. Cain, with his somehow untiring knowledge of all of these unknown truths about the universe that no other humans knew. Cain(Belial) led the hero of Diablo 2 RIGHT into the hands of hell.
Or Tyrael was watching over him. Since he is the last Horadrim as the angel points out in Act IV.
And in summary, everything that transpired leads me to believe the only way that Tyrael and the hero could have been so easily tricked, is by the lord of Lies. Who accompanied both of them? Cain. Cain has to be the Lord of Lies.
Or there was no trickery. The basis for your argument seems to be Izual's quote from D2, but I cannot see how it has anything to do with Cain. I know you're proposing a heavy conspiracy theory here, and as such it's hard to outright disprove it, but it would leave me rather disappointed if it were true.
Now, if Deckard Cain IS Belial, it's my belief that he's slowly having all opposition destroyed, including the Prime and Lesser Evils, as well as Asmodan. And if he couldn't deceive Tyrael, he'd be a pretty bad liar.
What a sad ending to the story arc. "Sorry guys, Diablo got outsmarted by this one dude called Belial whom you've barely even heard of before D3. The two first games were pretty much just him pulling the strings and all the creatures in the known universe dancing to his tunes."
I don't buy it, it that were the case and Belial is really capable of masterminding, nevermind executing, such a plan, he should have been a Prime Evil, not a Lesser Evil.

After watching the lore panel I'm really doubting this theory. They were very straight forward about Belial being the first main villain you face off and Azmodan being the second. I dunno they just didn't seem to have anything to hide at all, which they usually do with these kinda stuff in the lore panels. Sure they could have rigged super pokerfaces for this thing since it'd be a big spoiler, but I dunno.. it just seems quite unlikely.
@Phrozen- Belial is not going to defeat Diablo. They are not even enemies. You have been deceived.
@Verity- Killing Belial does nothing. His lies are what you must defeat! And they have already taken their motion!

Maybe Belial is so incredibly good at lying that he wanted you to come to this conclusion and battle over all of it when he's in fact hanging out in rainbow land living happy forever after?! Or maybe he lied so much that he decieved his own deception thus nullifiying it all!

I dunno about MGS2, but I assume it's a counterargument to what Daemaro said.
As I said in a post earlier there is just no real proof or disproof for the theory. All of the points have counter arguments.
For example, one thing I thought about was that they stated that the black soulstone is the key to wiping out the evil guys for good. It is also a extremely powerful tool in hands of a demon which would in their case be able to do whatever they wated.. Both Belial and Azmodan knows about the it so one could argue that if Cain is Belial then why doesn't he just take the soulstone and go nuts? We saw that Leah had it on her desk so it shouldn't be that hard to get away with.
On the other side of that argument we could say that the cinematic, and the acquiring of the soulstone takes place after Belial-Cain is already dead, explaining why he can't just grab it infront of everyone.
Metal Gear Solid features a story that is perhaps the most conspiracy-filled plot I have ever seen in either a video game or movie. And it's a great story, but it's set in an entirely different mood from what Diablo is as a product and experience. Metal Gear Solid is supposed to be about conspiracies, that's the whole point. Diablo is not, and while that doesn't disprove anything, I highly doubt that the entire game will descend into an MGS-esque plot style.

Dude, it's always been a conspiracy! This game is all about deception. Sticking the stone into his head in D1 was a misguided action. As was forge and as was destroying the world stone.
The Colonol of MGS was Liquid, laying Snake ALWAYS into a trap. The hero is Diablo has never really been a hero. They always just get into a trap to make it worse. Likewise with the world stone. Why are they making so many mistakes? Between heroes and tyrael. I'm telling you...Cain is going to call you on the codex and rip his face off as it is revealed to be Belial. Maybe not that extreme, but still.

Both are kinda equally plausible.
