Does anyone have any news about realms in Diablo 3? I don't mean realms in the WOW sense; but rather, in their old school (US: EAST/West, Europe,Asia) pre-WOW form.
I am also a little worried that Blizzard will disconnect the "regions", similar to what they did with SC2 - where players from North America could not/cannot interact with players in Europe/Asia/ect. I realize this was is due to latency issues, but it seems that we may now be dealing with a 'new' blizzard and so I throw the question to you.
What of them? what form will they take? Have any facts, theories, wishes, or whims regarding realms that you wish to share?
And on a side note: facebook integration. Did blizz. learn their lesson from the SC2 crowd, or will they try [even harder] again to implement something like this in DiabloIII. It seems inevitable to me (that they will try), but please 'say it ain't so'.
Bashiok has said twice now, that they aren't willing to discuss "regions" quite yet (both were in regards to the RMAH, but it's pretty safe to assume that realm regions will be the same, else it will just create the very thing they want to eliminate... third party trading. If I can *play* with Americans, but can only access the Canadian RMAH, then what's stopping me from creating a website for trading within the North American region?)

That realms will be more or less the same as they were in D2? -> I could be mistaken, and in fact I probably am, but I thought that the Auction House in WOW was universal. That players could and would often unknowingly buy things from other players located on different servers.
Also - If you could play with Americans then your auction house would also probably be linked with them(?). It seems likely then, that NA would only be able to trade with NA, if this was the server --- and that other regions would not have any influence on our North American server. (this was my original thought).
[ IF Blizzard is not willing to discuss this yet, then I suppose this thread will only lead to sheer speculation... that is unless anyone has uncovered anything? ]
My guess would be that RMAH will be across all realms. Yes, this means that realms will exist. However the only reason I see realm as something useful is for the Matchmaking for Public Games. This will ensure that Public Games will run smooth for all players, except those with bad connection overall. Ofcourse I think there will be so that you can invite people from another "realm" into a party and join Public Games that way, but that would mean one of you will lag so better just to play Private Games if you gonna do cross-realms.

To be fair, a lot of discussions surrounding D3 at this point in time, are just speculation
There are no "servers" in Diablo. There's just regions in which you can create servers within. And yes, in WoW the AH is universal to the region, but there's a big difference... there's no real world currencies, exchange rates and profit margins to take into account.
Blizzard has already hinted (ages ago now) that the RMAH in D3 will likely be consolidated to specific countries (read: currencies), rather than being universal. They've made really no comment to expand on that quite yet though.
I think it's mostly geared towards Europe, where there's a very significant difference in the number of currencies and exchange rates. Ireland as an example, uses both the GBP and the Euro (depending on region), Russia uses the Ruble, Pretty sure some areas of France are still using the Franc (could be wrong), etc. It would be difficult for Blizzard to create a "European Region" because of such varying currencies.
This is why I think that their decision regarding the currency separation used for the RMAH, will be what determines how regions themselves are implemented, and who you play with.
For North America, It might not be nearly as much of an issue since the CND and USD has been fairly similar for the last several years. Blizzard may lose some, but they also may gain some. We have somewhat stable economies that play off each other, and I can't remember a time in my life where the CND was significantly higher than the USD to warrant Blizzard being concerned about a loss from the exchange rate. Generally speaking, because the CND will dip lower than the USD before it will spike for any significant time, Blizzard will likely profit off of this so I can see a North America region for both trading, and playing. Europe.. is another story.

Why would I buy something off of you and risk getting my account banned, instead of buying it off my AH?
All WoW AHs are server based, and not universal.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
Yep, I don't see why people state WoW AH's are universal when they are not only realm based, where there are hundreds of regions but there are 3 separate AHs per realm - Alliance, Horde and Neutral.
There will likely be continental regions for D3 much like SC2. You can create servers in NA for example and NA people will be able to join you. EU people will not be able to.
Recently there were merges in SC2 and, from what I remember, the NA and SA realms merged and the EU and Asia realms merged. Can't be too sure though. What I know for certain is that both the RMAH and normal AH will be region locked. That's because you obviously have direct ingame contact to them. Means that they are on your realm. If the AHs can be crossrealm then there wouldn't be a continental separation of realms as well. Which, I believe, will not be the case.
edit:
Another thing to add is what Verity said in this topic
The AHs around the world will operate in different currencies. The US will obviously use $ while many EU countries will likely use €. The Brits, as proud as they are, will likely use £. Chinese will use Yen and so on and so forth. So even more splits.

What a bloody mess for a 'video-game' company to manage. What a bloody mess in general.
