Am I the only one that has noticed that Blizzard has been extremely silent on the PS4 version? I understand that up until this week at E3 -- the details on the PS4 have been very foggy... However, we can pretty much definitively state that that the PS4 will not ship until Late November/ Early December, and therefore neither will the PS4 version.
However, I'm starting to wondering if the PS4 version is either going to hold up the xpac (so that blizzard can try to milk the console version) -- or if the PS4 version is going to ship with the XPAC built in.
So I doubt that there is any extra treatment being given over the PS3 version. Probably just the same game disk but packaged in a PS3 case or PS4 case...
This is probably the reason it was only annoced for the Xbox 360 and not the Xbox One - Their games are not compatible with each other..

Absolutely incorrect. PS4 is NOT backwards compatible due to switching from the cell processor to an x86 architecture. Its my only qualm with the PS4 right now :-/...
I do not believe that the PS4 version will hold up the expansion. It will either release as a combination after the PC version releases the expansion, or the PS4 expansion will launch later. Perfect example is that the WoW China receives expansions later than the rest of the world because they are changed slightly. It does not hold up the release for the rest of the world.
Also, if anyone believes that this stems from the "delay" of the expansion, it's not from the PS4. There is no delay because the expansion was never announced. That stupid article is referring to the leaked product slate found in 2010 which slated Diablo 3 for a Q4 2011 release with expansion x1 to be released Q2 2013. Those plans are over 3 years old and claims that the expansion was "delayed" based on this slate are senseless and irrational BS.
Blizzard have stated that PC and console have different development teams so I have severe doubt that the development of the expansion for the PS4 will effect the release of the PC version. Lastly, the PS4 version is probably still under development, even the xbox 360 and ps3 ones probably are getting last tweaks. The PC version has been in expansion development mode for over a year now. That of course is my speculation and not fact however that's typically how development cycles work. It is widely believed that the expansion will be revealed in November at Blizzcon. Presentations will probably have to be ready by September/Early October. They didn't start expac 1 last week.

I think that became inevitable the moment Sony picked such a goofy-assed architecture for the PS3. The good news is that if they see sense and stick with x86 (x64 w/e), the PS5 should be well and truly backwards compatible... you know... in 10 year's time

PS5 is going to be the occulus rift -- or something like it at least. In 10 years VR will actually be mainstream.
From what I understand ... this isn't an emulator like the PS3 Gen 2 BC... but just a streaming service...
From the Wikipedia link:
Sony is planning to launch a cloud-based streaming service through Gaikai, a company acquired by Sony in July 2012. The service will emulate and render previous generations of PlayStation games, streaming them to the PS4 and, likely, the Vita, over the internet.[67][68]
That sounds, to me, like there may very well be emulation software for PS1, PS2, and PS3 bundled with the PS4 and that you will be able to download the ROMs from the "Playstation Cloud."
I could be wrong, though. This was only announced at the very end of February and, more than likely, is still developmental. However, I'd also bet that a month after the PS4 is launched people will have ROMs up on websites that you can download and transfer to your PS4 on your own.
It would be rather interesting to see a console using an emulation-based solution for backwards compatibility. That would allow them to change their hardware at any time in the future and retain that whole library. The downside is that you still have to generate the ROMs. It could be very interesting. If done well, it could be a very potent long-term solution to console backwards compatibility.

a cloud-based streaming service
streaming
There's no emulator that could ever handle running incomplete roms in a reliable way. What get streamed to you is a video feed from their *remote* severs doing the emulation. Expect most of the input lag suckitude that plagued OnLive.

I haven't tried it personally, but all my friends that have say they haven't had a single complaint, that includes the connection. It just doesn't feel too natural yet though. And there were some changes in their payment policies. Not too informed on that.

Any thoughts?

You are only partially correct.

It will not be possible with the hardware, but Sony is exploring software-based solutions (namely emulation) to allow for backwards compatibility.
