It either got to be killing the big red machine or pokeing cows and having them go splast all over you and than later finding out that the cow that you poke got about 100 cousins who all know who to use a gaint axes.
what makes it so good? its what keeps me coming back to this series.
medieval fantasy setting, which is my favourite kind, dark, eerie, gothic feel to it, well d1 anyway, couple classic mythological beasts, randomization, everytime i play i (should) get different items, you can use virtually any weapon you want, in some games characters are limited to but a few, judeo-christian references, good story and lore, great characters (d2 anyway), fun quests, awesome voice acting, state of the art graphics (for the time) great multiplayer mode with no fees to play online, but the game is perfectly fine to solo offline too, replayability, i can always try a new char/build or one i seldom use, the characters are not pre-built, the odd cultural reference, the arcane sanctuary, plays on the limitations of isometric drawing, like M.C Esher did, and if all that bores you, you can always bust out some mods.
plus the butcher was crazy scary the first time i fought him

Its the mood of the game, the world it is in. Most other rpgs shoot themselves in the foot by bringing guns and everyone has a load of dragons. There are no rpgs based on heaven vs humans vs hell. And its a great feeling roasting, hacking, or just freezing enemies. Its so much more than other games have done, you can kill thousands of demons every day and it doesn't get old at all. Replayability, the concept, the style, and the world it is based on is as simple as I can bring it down to. I'm sure there are other reasons, but these are the ones that correspond to me best.
Friends mostly, i met you guys when i started to get bored of diablo 2, and you all made it better. without mah friends, diablo 2 wouldnt be that great. I also enjoy the gameplay, the baal running, the mf'ing, and the rush that you get when you find something that is worth quite a bit. making new characters, basically everything, the whole concept is great.

Yeah, not too long ago my mom had seen my playing LoD. And she's all like, "I don't know how you can play that game. It makes me sick just looking at it." And I'm like, "Yeah, but haven't you said that about all the games I play?"
wat makes it great is the addictiveness in its simplicity. an excellent game to walk right into w/ out dealing with an enormous learning curve (ie. WoW) i looked at my friends screen while he was playin' and was like, what does this button do, bout a hundred times. lol
Diablo is deep enuff to keep ya interested, but not so much that its annoying to make multiple chars w/. it's just a devil of a game.
I play it because I have nothing else to do. It's an RPG, and it's the only one on my computer I can play with Winston (sometimes), and being an RPG freak, well, I like it.
Oh, and when someone asks me what's so great about a game, I tend to shrug and keep playing.
It seems everyone has different reasons for playing.
So, could it possibly, overall it's amazing and the many different aspects to it? I mean you can have just as much fun being a noob in Act 1 Norm as ubering.
makes makes Diablo so good?, what makes it so bad?
Id rather know those reasons, esp if they are beyond the realms of something to which you can reply with, "but that was the limitations back then, they did the best with what they could"

World of Warcraft was originally described as Diablo, but with warcraft characters, lol

I answered, "Yes."
He goes "What is it that makes Diablo so good?"
And then I realized I didn't know myself.
So what is it that makes Diablo 1/2 so amazing?
