Just wondering...Are 'acts' like level 1, level 2, and when you beat one you move on to the next area? I thought Diablo gave you an open world (obviously not all of it would be open at the start). So I guess my question is, in diablo 2, when you beat an act can you return to that area and come back? Or is it that once you beat an act that area is 'beaten' and you move on to the next area? Sorry for the n00b question I think this in the right forum, but if not I apologize.
How fun to explain this to someone who's never played the game!
Each act in Diablo 2 is done in a story sense as well as a setting for the game. Each act features a boss fight that you must pass in order to proceed to the next. Once beaten though you can travel back to previous acts to continue killing monsters there or look for loot.
Each act also has a town or base that you can return to. Within each act there may be lots of locations including open areas, caves and dungeons.
Also, not directly answering your question but on a related note, the acts in Diablo 3 will be very similar. It has been implied that there will be more than one town and possibly multiple enviornments per act in D3, so its an expansion of the D2 mechanic.
Okay, so its like moving on to a new area. But you can go back to completed areas. As long as you can do that, I'm happy Thanks for the explanation. I thought it was more in the style of say, a zelda game. Where the world is open (mostly) from the start but in order to progress you need to complete certain 'missions' in order.

Oh you can re-fight bosses? Thats good. I hate games that are set up so you have to start over just to re-play a certain part of the game.

Moved to D2 section although a similar answer can be given to how they will work in D3.
