TL;DR: don't waste your time here, go play the game. If you ever feel anxiety you may get something from this wall of text.
Hello guys today i wanted to write a little about how do i feel about the current meta in the game (leaderboards and greater rifts) and how did i feel in the past when diablo 2 was THE game.
I been suffering anxiety disorders since 12 y/o (i'm 25 btw) and i can deal with them in real life most of the time but while i can not play every game like most of you (e.g i can't play dying light, it's really unpleasant) i wanna tackle the whole "you're good at diablo 3 if you are on the leaderboards/you can complete G50 solo/etc"
I been playing diablo 3 since RoS came out, not understanding shit about mechanics until season 2 started (i was new and i didn't have friends to tell me how to play the game; nor did i knew reddit and sites like that) so when i started to understand the mechanics and how to gear up, set up skils and so on i started to play more seriously and more dedicated ('cause i don't really have a life so what better than achieve stuff online imma right?)
Well season 2 started and i mained monk, played the first two days straight and geared up really quick and started pushing solo, at one point in the first week i even was rank 5 (silly me, still i felt really good) but when the season was 1 month or near the end i wasn't even on the leaderboards, i tried pushing solo but no luck, felt really dissapointed but meh i focus on leveling paragons like crazy ending up at 763 which made my non seasonal paragon 800 (i like round numbers)
So s3 started, i entered a really nice clan and thought "well i can try pushing a little harder" fast forward week and a half and i completed G50 solo; which is shit i know, probabilly i not gonna end up in leaderboards at the end of the season with this, but to me it's freaking HUGE, because i know the frustration it took (and yes, i'm a shity player, not near a good one so you can save that, but i don't fish for grifts, i try to make each key count and give it my best try)
Proof:
After killing the boss i was fucking amazed, my heart was pumping blood like if it was a big deal, prior to this i muted the clan chat because no one would give a fuck about a G50 completed by me but i wanted to maintain the mistery and pleasure of someone maybe typing a "GG bro".
I love this game and franchise, been hooked up since i can remember and what i most loved about diablo 2 is the fun at parties with friends, farming baals and leveling chars, i didn't really enjoyed the PvP (you can see why) and the same applies to D3, i love farming in groups, sharing items (this is why i haven't been kicked out i guess, i'm always powerleveling people or sharing the gear that i get) love playing solo but i can't deal with the frustration of trying to be "the number one" o not just that, just a "decent good player"
The moral of this wall of text is the most obvious shit that you can read in many places; don't compare to others, don't put yourself unreal goals and try to enjoy your playtime.
I'm gonna post this before i feel stupid and delete it.
If you wanna throw me shit i don't really care but if just onepeople feeling like me read this and it helps him my job here is done.
PS: sorry about the gramar mistakes, i'm not from NA and i don't speak/write in english nor do i have studied the language.
PS2: If this isn't forum material feel free to delete it.
Yeah, I don't know how many people are currently playing D3, but given its sales performance last year (both D3 and RoS top 10 sellers despite D3 being two years old by that point), it's clearly a lot.
If you're the sort of person who must be the best.. given the number of players, and given that we have region-wide leaderboards.. there is a very very very very good chance that you are not going to be anywhere near the best. If this is going to cause you problems - you probably should not even try to compete.

D3 was a game millions of people bought, played it for a week, beat it, and shelved it, just like any other consumable console game.

People playing 'currently' is absurdly low.
Without official numbers, this is an impossible statement.
Some way to get an idea, is using general 3rd party numbers and compare them. 1 "provider" of such numbers would be Xfire (http://social.xfire.com/games), a tool that tracks what games people (that have it installed) play. This shows D3 currently being the 6th most played game, with 1/5 of the amount of hours as the top game. While these are not official numbers and far from complete, they do give somewhat of an indication, telling me there is still a high amount of players in D3.

You just keep telling yourself that, mate.
I'm sure you can come up with a baseless assertion as to why a game with an "absurdly low" number of players is currently #6 on Xfire's most played list, for instance?

Two words: Sample Bias.
Of course you're right the number of players on the game is a pretty healthy amount but that doesn't mean it's anywhere near the number of players who've bought the game.
Of course you're right the number of players on the game is a pretty healthy amount but that doesn't mean it's anywhere near the number of players who've bought the game.
Ah, of course. There is an absurdly low number of players - sorry, it's now increased to a "pretty healthy amount" of players (congrats, Blizzard!). And an absurdly low number of Xfire users. They just happen to be same people. What a coincidence!
I guess if you would see numbers of active players of the top game (on console for example) from 3 years ago, it wouldn't be anywhere near the number of players who've bought it. New things come all the time. If everyone sticks with 1 game, the new games wont sell...
So, that statement is even worse than the "sample bias" on xfire imo.
As long as the player base is healthy, it is fine.
How the F a thread about this game helping a player with his mental disorder (i know, this term is quite harsh) went to talking about number sales? Seriously guys....
On topic: i'm glad you've found a way to deal with your problem and you are not alone. I use games to help my self confidence and prove myself i'm capable to tackle some tasks (mostly pve raiding) because i have some disorders too (and no, i won't tell strangers on the net what they are).
And yes, stopping caring about other players' ranking is a good way to play this game and others too if you are not pushing for the top of the leaderboard. Keep going mate

I never said anywhere that the number of players was absurdly low (for D3 or XGFire) simply that the logical counterargument to "6th most popular game on XFire" is "XFire has an extremely biased sample pool because..."
Making any statement about player population beyond distinguishing between "release" "healthy" and "dead" is basically impossible without lifting usage data from blizzard directly. Third party programs by nature will bias any counts (and for the purpose of XFire just because something is 6 most represented does not in any way make it the 6th largest community, just that the community of XFire users play it more than whatever is in slots 7 and below).
Realistically
Active Playerbase < Peak Playerbase < Total Accounts <= Copies sold
Simply because of the way the population will evolve over time.

T6 legit has 300 in chat, Leet has over 700. Your obviously not playing or still leveling up

Nah, you just jumped in to defend the fool who did say that.
Except it wasn't defense. It was relaying the most likely response. You simply assumed it was a defense (if you read my post you'd read IMMEDIATELY that I also said that there's a healthy playerbase, not a low one) and immediately responded with (passive) aggressive sarcasm.
WTF happened to this thread? OP tried to inspire people with a story about how much fun this game can be when you remember to enjoy your own accomplishments and somehow everything went to hell. Congrats Krathoz, you deserve it. It's reasuring to know there are still some people in this game who can play well and log out at the end of the day with a smile on their face.

thanks Kaiser, most of the time i end up my playtime smiling yeah, except when a ultra rare item drops ancient but with shitty rolls (i'm looking at you kridershot ¬¬) but yeah, the game is a hell of enjoyment
