First and foremost, it does make me happy to see african americans go from slavery to president of the united states. I am very happy for them, and it shows that through time humans can better themselves. However, it seems like every time something positive happens to black people they say "look at how far we have come. its incredible!!"
Its like some african americans aren't used to good things happening to them... Now I can understand if you are older and your life has been directly touched by segregation and ridicule because of your race, but many of the african americans that are doing so much celebrating right now are young, and honestly play the victim card far too often. I am not saying racism doesn't exist in america, but I think it is blown out of proportion way too often.
anyway, I am not racist, and I have nothing wrong with black people succeeding in life, I just am confused as to why success is such a shock to SOME african americans.
anyways what brought this up was 3 people of african descent talking about how its great that black man is now president (this took place a couple hours ago while i was waiting to get my hair cut the three of them were talking). quite frankly i couldn't care less what colour you are as long as you do a good job.
im about to come off as an anti-semite even though im not...cant u say the same things about jewish people, and the reason they are fighting with palestine...what if the british decide america is theirs and want it back iys just bs
First of all, don't use the term African American unless you consider yourself a European Canadian. To answer your question, success doesn't really come as a shock it's more that they are proud to have a member of their race in office. Kinda like how you would feel if a Canadian traveled to mars. You would be like "W00t Martian Canadians rock!"

Isn't it better though to be happy about how far one has come as opposed to focusing on what debt has yet to be payed?

That's because a lot aren't. But a lot of people aren't used to good things happening to them. In the U.S. though, it is simply a fact that a disproportionate amount of black people live in poverty. I'm not going to debate the reasons for that here, but it's statistically true. So whether you or black people feel racism is still prevalent or not, people can't help but wonder if there is still a connection between being black and disadvantaged in the U.S.

So what if they're celebrating? There are tons of older black people celebrating as well. Many of whom were alive when schools were segregated and the civil rights movement didn't exist yet. The young people are happy for themselves, as well as their parents and grandparents who did actually exist in that world.

At times racism is blown out of proportion, other times it is not. Other times we acknowledge it will never completely go away, and other times we realize at any rate just how far we've come from being so ignorant about race.
And it's actually not a big shock to most black people that he won. Most people accurately predicted Obama would win and he did.

Racism still survives in American just fine. To even make a point about Obama being black when talking about his politics shows that race still matters to many people. For people to be so happy that America just elected its first black president also shows that race still matters to many people. All colors of people though have to live with the stigmatism of racism. And maybe for a lot of people, not just blacks, this unprecedented event in the U.S. has managed to lift some of that stigmatism.
Besides, everyone is really happy right now. The Obama presidency is still in its honeymoon period and much of the public won't start getting to harsh on him again until after his first 100 days of being president.

secondly wtf am i supposed to refer to them as...? black people? if so then i guess that means ill call asian people yellow and indians brown.
and you guys failed to understand the point of this thread...
The young people are happy for themselves
why are they happy for themselves... that is the point of my entire post
first of all dont use the term race unless you consider yourself an alien
I do.
There is no such thing as too happy. There is no need to rain on their parade. I used to get angry at happy people too but then I realized that anger at happiness is only a confession of sadness.
why are they happy for themselves... that is the point of my entire post
Why question their happiness? Don't you want others to be happy? You complain that people exaggerate racism, yet you're begrudge them their happiness because they're cheering for a black person? And people cheering, mind you, are also not just happy for Obama, but happy that Bush is leaving.
Personally, I don't think the lot of people understand politics at even the most basic level, but that does not change the fact that they are allowed to vote?!?
I think it is just something a lot of people would never have predicted. ( anything other than a white man being president)
I wonder if/when the first woman president is elected, all (or most) women will have a similar reaction??
You'd be surprised about how much US news gets over here. US election news often overshadowed our own elections and they happened a bit apart too... Its quite sad actually considering alot of Americans probably think NZ is part of Australia
Something relevant to the topic - Africans (In Africa) seemed quite excited also
Is your average New Zealander (Australian) even that into politics?
People are excited all over the world. Or at least most of them are simply happy that Bush is gone. Obama's dad is a native of Kenya so Kenyans were really happy.
I think many just understand so little, they perceive it as , wow a man that is not white, leading the super powerful USA?! Maybe there is hope for that place!!
Since Omaba has made many claims, to change not just America, but the world, I think this is the reason many are excited as well. they feel it is long overdue.
I am curious to see what the next few months and years bring, now that he is at the top, we shall see his intentions.
I wonder how many of the USA's current enemies were like "really??, wow"
Somewhere between shagging sheep and watching rugby we manage to vote
Is it true that Obama was once a Muslim and is now a Christian? I dont pretend to be an expert on Islam but I dont think muslims will like that very much...

nah he wasnt a muslim, but his dad was. he just recieved a muslim middle name hussein. but he was never muslim.
Too happy? Nah, I'm happy about it and I'm not political at all lol. Everybody seems pretty ecstatic. It seems to be a win win for just about everyone.
White people have paid their slavery debt(lol)
Black people have their prez, they have finally "arrived". No longer the lesser of a society they dominate just as much as everyone else.
Middle Eastern people MUST be semi satisfied at America being lead by Barack Hussein Obama. If anything I would think they would feel a bit more safe knowing someone who may share some of their views is leading America.
Idono, I'm happy about it. I live in the south, lots of racism that I despise. I live in the hood basically so some of my closest friends that I grew up with are black and I always hated when a family member would make a racist remark that is clearly not to be meant as a joke.
**Just for clarity here....Everybody is racist, it's simply to what degree. Racism is a in everybody, it is literally a fact. The brain categorizes things basically like a computer does. To help with the clutter sometimes instead of filing information about characteristics in a file specific to one person we categorize it under a color of skin instead. Racism is simply a negative social term for how our brain categorizes human features and characteristics.**
I think....most people can differentiate between two big things. The fact that a black man made it as president and the economic situation.
Everyone is excited that Obama has gone so far and is so happy for him in this great achievement.
But when it comes time to get serious everyone can look at Obama for his intelligence and hope that he has what it takes to turn things in a positive direction.
It's as if we found a reason to be happy in times of turmoil, something to overshadow the hard times. That is why everyone seems overly happy because often times there isn't too much to be happy about.
My thoughts may be a bit scattered as I just woke up and its 4:30 am

What satisfies me is that Al'quida or however you spell it refered to Obama as a "house ni***r". This just shows there fear of him. This is important, because they wern't really that afraid of Bush. Bush just went into a completely different nation instead of working on getting Bin'Laden. Hopefully Obama will return to trying to get Bin'Laden rather then attack Iran because it makes his penis look big.

We should all be happy! We have an intellegent president for the first time in eight years! Celebrate and rejoice! Good times are here at last!
(Also, on the racism thing, I knew a kid at my old high school in one of my classes that got my teacher fired by calling him racist... All the teacher did was try to get the kid to do his work... That's an example of a fucked up society...)
i'm argentinian so my opinion is from outside (that means that i can be very wrong lol)
i think there are two big things about obama, the first is historical (all the first black president and that... is like cristina fernandez here, pur first women president)
the second is that the fact that americans voted a black person for president speaks of a change in the US society... a very promissin change btw
but in the end he is just another politician and will make some things right ans a lot wrong.. like every politician in the history of mankind... the change for good must come from the US society itself

which brings me back to my point of the pattern of all leaders being bad. no doubt the founding fathers would have been criticized as well if there had been tv...
anyways im just saying that i think its foolish to be so happy with someone even though they havent done anything... :\
and no doubt someone will bring up faith in this, but faith didn't get the people of certain countries a good leader.
AA's are on a lower chain of social evolution. Obama is an outlier, an oddity, and I'm afraid he will not speed up their evolution in any way. In fact, if you ask me, Obama is not really an AA. His father is from Kenya, mother is white. There is a huge gap between blacks from African countries and AA's. An AA is not even a race, it's a social position - a black person born in the United States raised by other black persons born in the United States. And they still remain poor, uneducted, lacking medicine, etc., if you check the census. Africans do much better. The benefits and the treatment given to AA's because of the whole slavery thing ended up making their position worse instead of better. We look back at the slavery thing too far ahead. We keep giving them that excuse. That's why they don't want to rise. Hopefully, Obama will prove that all problems AA's have come not from their skin color, but from their own skewed pereception of themselves as AA's to whom the country owes everything because their far off ancestors were enslaved in it many years ago...
People are foolish to be happy? There is no reason, no reason out there, that a person should not be happy. It's all that we live for. And if a president elect makes a person happy, then bless them.
