I was not really aware the protests had become violent-aside from the usual confrontations with police and tear gas and rubber bullets which is fairly common during protests.
Some would think of China as a threat. Others just resent the love/hate relationship the U.S. has with them. Especially being that the two economies have become so inextricably mixed together. We both need each other, but what the U.S. resents most is how China keeps purchasing our debt using sovereign wealth funds.
Hopefully no protester is expecting China to suddenly go democratic. It would be a huge step just for China to acknowledge its human rights violations among the other issues involving Tibet.
It has been extremely violent on both sides. I've heard that western reports such as CNN are really leaving out the part where Tibetans kill many Chinese Tibetans, burn their houses, run them off the street. According to Chinese media (Yes I know... with all the censorship/propaganda, why trust them) more Chinese have died than the Tibetans, excluding soldiers. The truth is that apart from a few western reporters, no one knows much about the real situation. No one is expecting China to go democratic either, but all this "China doesn't recognize human rights" is not going to happen quickly. I kind of link "human rights" with democracy lol. China just doesn't seem like a country who can value human rights, at least not currently.
So...I'm pretty much sure that almost everyone has heard about the Tibetans( or Tibet people cause i have no idea if Tibetans is even a word...) are opposing the Olympics that will be held in Beijing, China. I myself is Chinese, and personally, I think that if you want to protest, then protest all you want, I really don't care...but if Tibet is going to use the Olympics just as an another excuse for politics then damn...thats low. I mean cmon, the Olympics is about sports. Period. Don't drag politics into this. Don't drag other countries ,through the Olympics, that will begrudgingly become a part of this conflict that was solely meant to be between Tibet and China. Maybe India...but I dunno...
But what do YOU think?
i think every person in the world has the right to protest, peacefully..
and i think its a smart move on their part, once the Olympics start the attention will not be on the "tebetians"
but they will get attention, which i think thats what every person who is protestings goal.
so either way, i dont think people should hate on them because, well they are just protesting, who gives a shit...

It's possible that for a long time things have been bound to spill over anyway. I think the Olympics kind of acts as an ideal catalyst for that. Considering that the entire world is going to be watching China and judging them for how they react to it.
Who knows how crazy things will get once the actual torch arrives in China. Yet it's possible they will keep the protesters under control there anyway. But what I'm almost picturing is another Tiananmen Square incident.
Maybe this controversy will spark some kind of revolution in China?
possibly... i really think that they should do a peaceful protests.
i think it will be a lot more effective then blowing shit up, and pissing every country off..

But in all reality, do you think communist China, with no regard to human life, would care if they killed some people? The only way that the rebels could stand up really is by revolution with arms, unless someone like the US or something intervened on part of them. In any case, I think it would have to require arms, although I'm not particularly thrilled about violence
They tried peaceful protests in China once. But the government escalated it into violence because protesting is simply not tolerated. In China, if you did a Google image search on Tiananmen Square, you wouldn't even be able to find this image.
Most younger generation Chinese don't even have a clue as to what this picture represents.
but if they do it while Olympics are present.. i highly doubt that the Chinese would use force to stop a peaceful protest.. no country wants that image..considering there will always be cameras there...
then again.. i don't know much about china, gonna have to wikipedia this crap..

This is precisely what's so interesting about the dilemma. China knows the world is going to be watching them very carefully, and yet they also know there are going to be protests. And they do not know how to really handle protesters short of using violence.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. The rebels would need to fight, on a large scale, to really spike up the attention. It would have to be something large-scale, something so obvious that China couldn't censor it.
Edit--
After reading Sianoq's post, I declare this post void. I get what you mean know.
Yeah, I mean that the Olympics is when they will start to get more notoriety. After reading those posts, I realized that revolution would need a little more build up anyway.

The younger students do know actually. It's not as bad as we say it is lol.
But you would think China would learn from that massacre... *sigh*...
But sometimes the protests go out of hands, that peace doesn't work. I mean they do have death penalities there, and you can't just put them all in jail lol.
They did learn a little. There's a little bit more lax on the country. People can use the internet and such and supposedly the peasants have greatly diminished, going to school and moving to cities.

Maybe not as bad as some say it is, worse than others say it is. In that show that linked to, they show the image of Tankman to a bunch of Chinese students and they had no idea what it represented. And Google has agreed to censor that image along with tons of other content on the Internet.

There remains a really huge rural population in China that is still mostly poor. There are many middle class citizens who have greatly benefited from the growth in China's economy, but a dangerously high number of Chinese farmers, peasants, etc, have been left behind and the gap between the classes is growing too fast for China. It makes them risk imploding if they don't take more measures to develop the poorer parts of the country.

It's not purely about sporting events.
The Olympics also curve countries attention and what countries think of each other.
