But hear me out on this one. I can be completely off, but it's worth tossing out there for the fuck of it all..
So the gates of hell are now open, and all hell has broken loose. We know that some monsters in the game fight each other, as well as the player. Can it be that all the forces of hell, including Azmodan and Belial's warriors, Diablo, Mephisto, Baal, whomever, jumped into sanctuary, and the forces that were fighting in hell, are now fighting in Sanctuary? That being said, I mean Azmodan and Belial's forces are battling each other on Sanctuary, and battling the poeple of Sanctuary (the player is included when I say that, btw) ?
It's kinda twisted, but it's worth thinking about some place along the way.
Actually, most of Hell held no allegiance to Diablo (or any of the Prime Evils) for long periods of time. Most of them have their allegiance to the Lesser Evils, oddly enough- when the Lesser Evils rebelled and overthrew the Three. Or at least that's what I *think* I can remember.
Anyway, yeah, I think you're right, Egyptian one. Now Hell's chaos is in Sanctuary (or will be). What does that mean, then? Well, methinks it means that they want Sanctuary to become as Hell. Then there's no world medium between Hell and the High Heavens. Sanctuary would become an "outpost" of Hell, as quoted from the game (Deckard Cain, I believe- I'd have to google around a little to find out for sure, I haven't used it in a while).
Anyway, I think that the battling between Azmodan and Belial would cease, and they would enter a temporary pact, while Sanctuary is open to them (and Heaven). I would think that they would know that they are stronger together. And once Heaven and Sanctuary are conquered, then they would continue their feud.
Nah, they're too dumb to do that. They're like Israel and Palestine, they'll just keep kicking each other's behinds. Sanctuary will be Ghaza, more or less, hell being Israel, and heaven being whichever part of Palestine doesn't get frequently bombarded. Nice analogy here, no?
Many people will tell you, the game(s) don't follow the storyline to the "T"
So I would have to say the choice lies with the current Blizzard staff working on the project.
It would be my thought that they would make the game, to best suit the majority of it's clients... that being said<><> what would you guys/girls like to see??
Me personally, I would like to see all of hell united against you and your party, rather than seeing a multi-war. It's not like you would be willing to sit back and let one side take out the other anyway, would you?

I want a proper storyline that respects lore. Hell fighting itself, and fighting me would be much more fun to witness than everybody fighting me, while urinating all over lore.

Actually, that was a good analogy, I'd say

Erm, sorry
Remember that 20 years have passed since D2... Perhaps there are no fights over power anymore, a ruler could have been established (belial has kicked azmodan's ass or vice versa or sth like that, and that's why it took 20 years for hell to finally come to sanctuary)... Perhaps even the prime evils managed to escape the abyss and rule once again.
True to a point, but remember these feuds have been going on for an eternity, I don't think just 20 years would change much, But you never know
I'd personally think that creatures so volatile and chaotic as demons would naturally want to fight each other, since its what they exist for. Realistically, every war is a multi-front affair, I think, so I don't see why narrowing it down to just you vs. Hell is fair. Also take in to consideration that Heaven doesn't particularly favor Sanctuary, either, only Tyrael does, and we don't know what his standing is with the Angiris Council with his actions being as they were. So that's two fronts, at least.
Yeah, honestly, I'd like that, too. That's more of an MMORPG ideal, but I always liked those kinds of things. Choosing a side makes you a more defined character, and gives you something to fight for in the game. But I think they said already that won't be an issue in one of the interviews. I *think*.
In any case, I think we can count on Diablo III's storyline being much more complex and intriguing than any previous game, or any of the books. They've now established tons of backstory and history with their books and previous games, so they have a lot of choices for Diablo III.
it would make it kind of tough to go questing with a party though, if one player choose one side and you choose the other, you wouldn't be able to play online with that char because they choose a different quest path.
The storyline and the quests in the game kind of have to be the same outcome for every player or it would ruin the compatibility of co-op play.

It does not really change the fact though that you would NEED to have only one outcome for every major decision in the game... or you would not be able to play together.
I'm sure if it was only a minor thing in the game that really had no affect overall, then they could do it though.

They could make it so whenever you create a game, the monsters that fall by your hand (or other party members) get counted.
When you start to have a great deviance (ie: you have killed 1000 more of one leaders army than the others) that army will start to favor you and your party. (you will get less traps sprung on you less ambush by that army, better item drops, ect) the army that your appear to be favoring in that game would focus more of their efforts toward the other army than you. So if a monster had the choice it would prefer to attack the other army rather than you, but it will still engage it normal combat with you.
In some special cases monsters will be so focused on the greater threat that they will actually end up helping you (of course they would not realize this)
Every game created is differant, im sure it could lead to some interesting scenarios where you would have a particular advantage in some situations that you would not necessarily have unless that portion of the army is "favoring" you.
The part of hells army that is recieving the most punishment would hate you, to the point where monsters are so enraged with you, they will risk life and limb just to get a poke at you and your party.

Erm, sorry- this place is full of its own comings and goings, it's hard to keep everyone straight sometimes
Anywho, for a fast-paced game like Diablo, I guess adding more complication isn't a good thing, necessarily. It interrupts the instant gratification feeling, I guess. Otherwise, I think they would have implemented something more grand like you guys are suggesting (and me).

Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions
I did not know that the forces of hell did not all bow down to Diablo. Although it kind of makes sense, no honor among hells army.

@Maffer..yeah, but I'm sure both sides would have decent characters in them, so I don't think that's a MAJOR issue.
