unless it has some original PvP mode i dont see Diablo III becoming e-sports material. ever.
Diablo II was mostly PvE/Coop and from what i've seen, Diablo III is going the same path.

edit: your comparing d3 to MMORPG's. d3 IS NOT AN MMORPG
the only thing mmorpg is relivant to is the number of people playing on a server at any given time. Thats not even close to what im talking about.
Erm? You were trying to sell the idea that the MMORPG's that you mentioned (Ever and WOW) receive regular nonstop content updated because of their service fee's. You will find that most MMO's charge a monthly service fee to maintain the MASSIVE amount of hardware that is needed in servers and bandwidth to maintain the game. Since d3 isn't an MMO it won't require such a massive hardware infrastructure such as WOW. So there is no need for a service fee to maintain the servers, bliz will more than cover it's cost through regular sales.
So should we pay $15 a month for a game that doesn't need subscription money to be maintained? No...
The diablo crew are full time employees at blizzard, not contracters. once d3 is released they will most likely work on fixing balance issues and other things they figure out once the game is released. So should we pay $15 a month for work that the full time bliz employees are going to do regardless? No...
Since d3 isn't an MMO which requires a massive amount of hardware and bandwidth to maintain I cannot for the life of me justify paying a service fee.
We all know that in games such as Everquest and WoW, the game content is rich, very extensive, and pretty much never ending. All that comes with a $15 a month service fee. I know the servers have to be paid for, but with all the people in the world that play these two game giants, I'm sure those servers are paid for and then some at $15 a head. I mean thousands apon thousands pay to play. So the rest of the money just goes to the other expenses like enriching the game content right?
Well I guess my question to Blizzard is... how far is Blizzard able/willing to take Diablo3 game content for us Diablofans while keeping the game free. Are we able to see game content as lengthy as wow and eq off strait up software sales?
It wont be pay to play they already said that.
1. There isn't enough content in it to be pay to play. I'm not talking about items, I'm talking about how long it takes to get from 1 to 60. They said the length of the game was about the same as diablo 2. Imho, I wouldn't pay 2 play for that amount of gameplay even if it IS diablo 3.
2. They already confirmed the only payment plans in store are other things such as changing your characters name or things related to that nature.
3. Since the level cap is 60 we can assume there will be a bunch of expansions that will stretch the content.

This is completly wrong.
MMORPG fees are not only for the server maintance. There are paid mmorpg out there wich servers don't cost 10% of the free bnet 2.
MMORPG are games that works only with constant implementation - and are the games were constant implementations are very welcomed by the players unlike shooters and rts. So a MMORPG is not only a game with massive servers, they are games that reproduce then self through time. For example: take wow classic just before TBT come out and compere to WoW classic in the release. The amount of content added via patchs were enormous, almost another game.
Ofc fees are needed for the maintance, but i believe that the server costs are not heavy compered to what they gain via fees. And the reason why players submite thenself to pay fees are the hopes for constant implementation.

What is completely wrong? Companies that produce/support MMORPG's need a constant income to support their game, both in terms of development and in terms of servers and bandwidth. If a company does not make much money in the natural sales of its games (such as blizard does) then of course they have to charge monthly fees for more than just the servers/bandwidth. If they only charge monthly fees to cover the server costs and bandwidth then where does the money to pay their staff come from? its just common sense...
Bliz does not need our subscription fees to pay for their staff because the money that they will make from the organic sales will cover their staff expenses BY A LONG WAY.
So with the staffing costs out of the only thing that may cause a subscription fee would be if the game requires a lot of bandwidth and/or a large server infrastructure. But because D3 is not an mmorpg this is not the case.
Everybody in this thread trying to justify that d3 can/should have a monthly fee by relating it to MMORPG's. DIABLO 3 IS NOT AN MMORPG!
Patches and expansion packs will come for d3 REGARDLESS because they have full time staff and the server infrastructure wont be very demanding because d3 is not an MMORPG. So how can you possibly justify a subscription?
As for how far will the game go without a paid subscription? Games like d1/d2 have a lot of replayability in them and the endgame is really only just the beginning. Collecting rare items / crafting rare items and creating godlike characters are some of the most rewarding things in d2, all of which take a very very long time to achieve. With the rune skills system coming in the variety of possible builds will be insane! So I think that d3 will go a long way with regular patching and the occasional expansion pack.
really, DryIce, the thing most of the people try to say is that "if anyone expects content patches and not just bug fixing ones every 3-6 months (first year, more rare after that) you wont see any without a subscription fee. Diablo III isnt MMORPG, sure, but asking for content patches (regularly) means you're asking for MMORPG features. And those nobody will get without paying for them. So it probably will be just expansion(s). One, maybe 2, i dont think more will come. With it, no more content either. Battle.net will remain free, but wont have the customer service WoW has for the reasons mentioned before. Or as good latency.
Yeah DryIce you really didn't get the OP from the start. Nobody wants a monthly fee, and even though this has been answered already, the question was to how far can Blizzard make awesome game content while keeping battlenet free

I think adding in a new dungeon once every 5 or so months would satisfy me to keep coming back just before I wanted to quit, even if it's such a tiny dungeon that has no real good loot, it would just make me wanna play the game again(An excuse to come back, in other words).

It's all been said. The pun, the not so funny joke, the phrase, something about oneself, the not so random picture.
