Since we're still waiting for the male Demon Hunter, I want to introduce a concept for character cuztomization as we go further down the road beyond hell.
There will be no world editor for our sake in D3, therefore the endgame content in my opinion needs better focus, and hopefully, better attention from the dev team.
Arena punishes death/half hardcore mode: When character dies in battle, their resurrected form will be a little slower or weaker in certain random aspect (running pace/casting/melee attack), this can be fixed by having descendants (will explain later, works much like hirelings) Go further than "the ear": The character which fails in the battle can be scarred, aged, etc.
The idea is to make a certain depth to what your character looks like, since building a character is such an important aspect of Diablo, I think this brings an interesting look, a crude look that you will experience with when looking at your character, it doesn't last forever, but it diverse the character' demographic in the Diablo world, so we won't be simply seeing higher level and lower level differences, perhaps you'll be seeing a Wizard holding a wand with the grip that has two finger missing, hell, he could be missing an entire arm for that matter.
Or a Barb with a weird twisted trunk for spine, one shoulder backen in a weird edgy angle, like an uncertain monster who have to fight with experience more than relying on his old strength.
Maybe the punishment doesn't happen so frequently, or maybe it can be define on how the character was destroyed. I certainly can see myself watching my enemy carefully, examing them, see if something's funny about the way they act, maybe I can define what kind of weaknesses they have by their symptoms. PVE random strangers will be checking out each other, remembering each others name. This way, a certain form of community functions could naturally be taken place. A silent one, it's very appropriate since looking at each others gear has always been an essential peices for players activity in D2.
Descendants: Essentially its a circling system, a stash of bodies ready in place when your character's destroyed.
If killing can occur in PVE, protecting the descendant from being rob away or destroy can be another interesting activity in sanctuary, defensive strategy, and more specific builds to raise descendant. However, raising/protecting a descendant could also take place in PVP realm, if you want your character to have a descendant in place when you're slaughtered by your opponent, you may have to take the descendant into the battle, and try to protect it/stashing it somewhere in the arena. Still, maybe the descendant can work as hirelings, you can specificly utilize some some of them as hirelings, for example, opponent will have to observe if he's chasing after a real, perfected, gorgeous descendant or a deadly meat shield who was demanded to distract the oppose team's Barb.
The idea of a perfect descendant can be unharmed, unscarred, which they will more likely inherit your full strength. (and not missing out a skill or two) Or if you kill your enemy in a specific way, you might be able to steal his body and use it as a vessel. But I'm just making stuff up now, I'll continue to update on this theory, when it's done, I'll tweet the link to @Diablo.
Would really like to know what you guys think about this, my idea for descendant doesn't have much content to make it anymore detail yet.
About the first idea: In diablo your character is to small for the player pay attention in this kind of details (battle scar, missing eye, finger, etc...). So you would have to add drastic stuff like loosing a arm and not being able to wield a shield. Or loose a leg and have to replace it with wood logs and loose % of your walk speed.
But i'm afraid this is to hardcore for Diablo community. I would like it anyway =D
About the descedant idea: This is the kind of system that requires the whole game builded around it. If the game was based on a clan and you had to raise the next generation it would make sense.
Some people love hirelings or similar, it's another system for you to take care off and it may add another level of personalisation. The problem is how the hireling or any other allied NPC plays in the game. Gameplay wise they are dull and have someone to tank for you all the time is a bit silly actually. It doesn't work for me =/

Glad you're further analyzing how the feature should be presented.
And about the descendant, I think Blizzard wouldn't swallow it unless I gave a bite of something more "Diablo" than "a society behavior" in Diablo. But I'll definitely push in more detail to allow the body thiefing/stashing/purifying process more susceptible to Blizzard's ear.
Cool shelf.
Thx =)
I love hirelings. I hope they have mercs in D3, mercs that you can fully equip, even more than in D2. AND MERCS WITH A BACKSTORY!
We all do, my idea is if we're demanded to make more strategic uses with hirelings, it itself could remain as the same role it played in D2, if we're doing certain elements of micro/instructions to them, we're taking part of the killing it does, and the monsters that it slaughtered wouldn't be a waste of the experience we part take.
I don't really think permanently negative features would be very desirable.. I mean if I put 100 hours into a character, only to watch him get old and ballsack looking, or have a boss put the Gilbert Grape on his arm or something, I'd be severely pissed. Cause basically you'd be punished for putting in the time.
In terms of having a lineage of kids, look.. We haven't even moved in together or gotten a dog yet.. Yeah, I know you're almost 30 and the baby bell's a ringin', but put some ice on those ovaries and get your head on straight (I actually said this to a girlfriend once. It didn't go well).
No in all seriousness though, having "bloodlines" sounds more like the Sims or Farmville to me. I vote no we can't.
One idea that I would support, however, is having your character's physical render show positive traits as you progress.. such as a Barb working off the beer gut, the guns turn into cannons, muscles get massive, score some badass tatoos, w/e. A Wizard could start to glow based on the build specialization. Witch doctor could.. um. I dunno maybe get some more shrunken baby heads on his necklace or some shit. The amazon IMEAN demon hunter could get bigger nipples. Cause you know you're playing DH for fap, don't even lie.

First of all, I'm twenty, I've been thinking about putting my photo on my profile page (like Bashgosh did.) But I don't want any of the youtubers who had experience reckless comments from me, track me down, and find BarlowEnter's face is now public. (Know it's not likely, but i'm already extremely restless in nature, so I don't like the burden, and I still like making reckless comments, not planning on having children, maybe never will.)
The bloodline, well, I would like to change the title into vessel stashing. You can be require to destroy your enemy in a more delicate fashion at the arena, so you can properly steal his corpse.
What important aspect I think I myself didn't realize at first is, it differenciate the entire Diablo world's demographic, more than just the level differences, and I never did suggest the differences is base upon children population or seniors, oh god no, maybe it did imply but I never intended that way, rather it brings in a more interesting population than those we had enough experience with in real life. Now the complex taste of such demographic is, characters with a specific weakness for you to look out for, and he/she thirsts for a body to crawl into,
half hardcore means arena becomes more rationally intense, though you may torn up yourself a little, it's the thirst for body thiefing/stashing becomes another element of treasure in supply awaits you, and that's the Endgame content I was going for.

Dude you're sounding like a psycho-creep. Kill in delicate fashion. Steal corpses. I'm demon slayer, not a maniac =O

Of course I'm just trying to make an elaborated say to demonstrate a decent visual, non too human will definititly be a positive attention reinforcement to my point. It's meant to make the twist sounding more interesting to @Diablo.

This is my basic philosophy when I'm out at the bars.
