Blair Witch Project is also one of my favorite horror films. I know a lot of people said it suck, but if you watch it late at night with no lights on in a cabin out in the woods somewhere, it suddenly becomes a lot scarier. It's one of those movies you need to watch with listening ears and an open mind.
it was a blair witch rip off. and the ending sucked.

I hated it. Wasn't there some sequel too? I thought it was garbage one way or the other.
i dont know about that. it was done perfectly, especially with the camera. i remember when it first came out everyone thought it was real.

That's because a lot of sources claimed it was real. It wasn't scary or well written. You can't claim Cloverfield ripped off BWP because it was filmed on a personal camera. That's like saying BWP ripped off my home movies from when I was a baby.

They are completely different genres.

Cloverfeild was iffy, I like the concept but it made me feel a little queasy when the camera got all shaky(maybe I was a lil tipsy, cant remember). I didn't like the end, I see where they were going but it was a bit unbelievable(yea I know) they survived a heli crash and I don't see how that giant thing kinda snuck up on them like that. They nuked the place which would have sent out a huge emp. I doubt the memory would have been recoverable.
I watched it again on demand last week and I thought hut or whatever his name was was incredibly annoying. All he did was yell "Rob! Rob! Rob!" and not to mention he looked soo annoying. I almost had to turn it off it was getting on my nerves so much.
I didn't like it at all. It kinda tried to copy something from the good movie Godzilla but failed on it completly. You were almost not able to see the monster I think you got one glimps of full view at it. It was in my opinion everything very predictable in the movie. So my opinion was bad movie, good that I didn't go and see it in the theatres but just rented it.
Which Godzilla movie are you referencing, here? The 1998 version with Matthew Broderick?
You are correct in that these two films are not equal, but not for the reasons you believe.
Judging by your statements, you completely missed the concept the filmmakers had in mind, and achieved, with Cloverfield.
Wow, there are a lot of stupid points made in this thread.
You couldn't see the monster until the very end, because that is what they wanted. If you would have seen the monster in the opening scene, would you have watched the whole movie?
If Cloverfield made you sick, you have a pathetically weak stomach. After about 5 minutes into the movie, you should be used to it. Seriously, some of the shots were even on a steady cam!!
As for the Blair Witch Project. That was not a good movie at all. I don't understand how someone can like BWP and not like Cloverfield. BWP has a very very weak story, bad camera (MUCH worse than Cloverfield), and the acting is pathetic.
I don't get why people don't like the ending. What did you all think was going to happen? Did you really think the monster was going to die, and everyone survive, and live happily ever after? You people have to understand that Abrams was taking a huge chance on this movie, and succeeded with flying colors. He killed off everyone one of the main characters, except for the black girl, which everyone forgets about.
What did you expect? Braveheart??? Lord of the Rings??? Titanic??? Pirates of the Carribean??? True it was hyped up pretty big, and people were probably expecting more. BUT IT IS A MONSTER MOVIE!!! A monster terrorizes a city, people get killed, military comes in and attacks the creature, creature doesn't die. The end.
Now the thing is, they left room for the sequel, (which is supposedly already in production) and it will be told from a different point of view, with a different style (including camera).
JJ gets my applause and :thumbsup: four thumbs up.
The subway. When you knew that something was going to get them, but didn't know exactly when, or what. Hell, I thought something was going to get them when the lights were still on.
Actually, it could have been the girls chest exploding, or it could have been the bridge being destroyed, or the Statue of Liberty's head being knocked off. Which all of you have to admit was pretty damn cool.
BTW, the camera was DV, so it had a tape. EMP wouldn't have mattered.
The subway scene was probably the least original part of the movie. How many times have have you seen the whole "attacked by large insect creatures in a dark place" scene? Monster movies really dont do anything for me anymore, it all just seems too cliche. Why would the monster swim all the way out to the statue of liberty just to knock its head off? The heat would have melted the tape regardless.

Yeah, it was really cliche, but it that doesn't take away from the suspense of the scene.:O
The heat wouldn't necessarily have melted the tape. If they were 10 miles or more away from ground zero, the blast wouldn't have been from flame and heat, it would have just been the displacement of air. Possibly only hurricane force winds.
The largest of our bombs has a vaporization zone of only 3-5 miles. Within another 2-3 miles, the force of the blast is cut to nearly 1/3 the original speed. I'm sure there were other people who videotaped the creature's destruction, but it just happened to be this particular tape that survived.
Edit: Actually, our most powerful bombs are 20 Megatons, which have a ground zero of 35 miles, so yeah, it would have been vaporized. It only would have survived if it was a 1 Megaton bomb, or smaller.
Oh I thought they hit the monster directly, I'm pretty sure in real life they would have done a tactical strike though. They probably wouldn't have hit it with the biggest one. If I was the Military I would have hit it with a moab in an attempt to save as much of the city as possible.

Hell yeah, MOABs are tight!! The Mother Of All Bombs.
Yeah, the biggest bomb would not have been a very wise choice. Especially since it was New York. MOABs would have probably been the most logical weapon to use. Although, it was a moving target, so maybe they should have used something more like this. A Javelin.
The problem I see with big monster movies is that we currently have the firepower to destroy anything smaller than the state of texas with the press of a button. So how could it pose a real threat?
Yea, a javelin would have split that big dummy's head wide open.
