A certain number of matches would be posted every day, and users will cast their votes via PM. This would ensure that users would not vote for a team over the other because their friend did so, or whatever, there are plenty of reasons.
A much simpler way is to just have a poll in each thread. As opposed to all other contests you've done, this is not a rating contest that requires A) anyone to pick a number between 0-100 or B.) anyone to pick a users name. All we have to do is pick between two preset contestants. Having an anonymous poll is much easier both for the voters and for you, and will allow a whole lot more people to vote if they don't have to send you a PM.
Idle thought, but when people submit their teams to you, could they not also include two pictures of their characters (optional of course) to be included in their threads? I mean, not everyone will know of every character that comes up, and if we're going to vote blindly a picture might help out.
Hmm..that's good. Better than what I had in mind. I thought the polls could reveal who voted for who, but if they're anonymous, then alright. Of course there will be pictures posted, btw.
I like PD's idea. If I were to do this, I would probably pick my two favourite NBA players. But 99% of the peeps here wouldn't even recognize them and I'd be out. Even if I did post their pics, I don't think it'd help much.
It's your problem because you're hosting this tournament. And PD even referred to what happened on GameFAQS where Sephiroth won most of the time cause' of his popularity. So what do you think is gunna happen on a diablo forum? Hrmmmmm *scratches* So it's YOUR problem, and you would need to figure out a balancing system, imo. But I don't even know why I'm giving you advice. You're hardly worth my time

Still, how is it his problem if you pick 2 NBA-players, out of all the world's video game characters, nobody else has heard about except you? He told you it's based upon ones own personal preference. Everybody has already stated the outcome of each and every match is totally random. Stop being such a close-minded dick about it. Obviously what Ullion meant (and Sixen hinted at) is that there should be different categories so that his real favorite chars has at least a remote chance and also that we get a more broad selection than just everybody picking Sephiroth and Diablo only to be told they've already been picked.

Hardly. I wouldn't choose anyone from Diablo, and I doubt everyone is going to choose 6 characters from Diablo. Even if two did, all the worthy characters would be exhausted anyway. People can also vote OUT the strong team to ensure their teams' survival. Do you even think? Just for a second, do you? It's not my problem. No balancing system. What? He was completely right. Completely. If he likes those NBA players, all the power to him, I'm not gonna fix this tournament up so that everybody has a REALLY FAIR chance. All but ONE team are going to be eliminated. This could be because nobody likes the team, nobody really knows a member or the two members in the team, nobody cares about the team, or whatever the reason is. If he wants to choose NBA players who, as he worded it, 99% of the people on this forum don't know about, how is that ANYONE'S problem, nevertheless MY problem? It's HIS problem. It's like me saying "But I want to pick the two Hezbollah characters in a locally made Counter Strike game, but you guys wouldn't know them, so this isn't fair!!!!". See how ridiculous that sounds? Not my problem at all, he should choose a team who he likes, and knows will be liked by almost everyone else to ensure that his team wins. This isn't something really childish, this isn't Lego, it takes SOME amount of intelligence and time put into it so that a person stands a chance of winning.
Sounds like a fun idea, but there needs to be more of a point, not just, "vote for whatever you're feeling at the moment" :P.
The two main goals of any tournament I hold are to have fun, and to spark some activity. The point is that people will vote for the team they think is awesome enough to win, and is a good team in itself. Like, obviously a team consisting of Tyrael and the Paladin is going to "click" more than a team between Diablo and Super Mario. It depends on several factors for me personally, and Person A might vote based on a slightly different criteria than Person B uses to cast his/her vote. That's really the point. You guys are just blowing this completely out of proportion. It's really simply. It's not rocket science, brosagnas.
Well then, you completely misled me and maybe other people by mentioning NBA players in the OP. No person with SOME amount of intelligence will pair such chars (sorry NBA fans) with any other char.
Like Ullion said, 99% of people do not know them.
Misled? I was simply saying that you can choose them..how is that misleading? :| Any character in any game can be chosen. I just simply WON'T do anything to compensate for a team bound to lose like a team composed of two NBA players in a board which has a very few users who watch NBA.
Yeah, Ullion did say that, I'm jut beating my brain here trying to figure out why the fuck he made such a nonsensical argument.
You'll have to admit they are not real choices though...unless there were different team formation criteria( for example like- a villain in any game + any diablo NPC) or char from a sports game + a Warcrat char) ...but you already said that you won't do anything about it, so uh...well let's forget about it and do it as you wish.
Okay, this thread is starting to get ridiculous. And I don't think it can be blamed on Mephisto. Everyone needs to calm down or I'm gonna start adding warnings. The last thing I want to see is people getting banned because of an argument about a potential contest (that wont even win you anything of real value, anyways). Please present your ideas in a calm logical manner.
It's your problem because you're hosting this tournament. And PD even referred to what happened on GameFAQS where Sephiroth won most of the time cause' of his popularity.
Well it was mostly meant as a joke to be honest. If Sepiroth wins so be it, but I'm definitely going to try to stop it.

So, ignoring you insulting me directly in two posts and indirectly in just about every other, let's see what I can get out of this...
What I've got so far:
Teams of 2 characters from any video games.
Match-ups chosen at random between pairs of teams.
Voting criteria is entirely up to the voters (one might vote for Riddick because he is badass, one might vote for Mario because he loves the Mario games).
Team with fewer votes is eliminated.
Whichever team is left at the end wins.
Am I right so far?
As for this being a solution to inactivity, I don't see it, at all. I doubt people are going to come back to the site just to click a vote button they don't care about, and I cannot in any way see this attracting new traffic.
Also, answering the question "Why didn't the OP explain a damn thing?" with "Because it didn't explain, silly!" is possibly the least helpful comment I have ever read on this site. First, you made us guess at random for what you actually mean, since you have some sort of aversion to saying it yourself, and then when your intentions do come to light, all the info is spread out through the thread, and notably not even in the OP. Real helpful for any newbies you may be trying to attract (to help solve that inactivity problem) when the OP has no info relevant to the discussion.
I also like how you go from mocking someone for trying to win to saying that winning is SRS BUSINESS and takes skill and intelligence in the same post.
EDIT: I'll be impressed if you can respond without attack my mental abilities or calling me your brother.
Maybe everyone who submits a team should include a picture and a small summary about their characters, if your unknown characters are badass enough they'd at least win from less badass unknown characters because of the description. Or maybe just a link to the wiki article so the info is at least unbiassed? Hell I'm just throwing out ideas.
Yeah, I know dude, I already said that this would be done.

I never said it would attract new users or anything of the likes. It would spur some forms of discussion, I would be making threads not related to the actual voting to spur discussions and such. I have a lot in mind other than just the voting itself. You basically only know half of the story, and you're hell bent on nitpicking.
It doesn't matter if the OP does or does not contain the holy grail. I have answered everyone's answers throughout the thread, and basically every detail has been explain more than once. Read over the thread, you will realize this fact. This was done because I didn't realize that you guys wouldn't understand everything from the OP. Not my fault, I'm not a psychic, anyone could have made that assumption. Stop crucifying me for it. Virtually everytime I set out to do something that might be fun and helpful to this site, I get crucified at some stage by some user at some stage in the tournament/contest I'd be holding. How wonderful it would be if that doesn't happen!
Winning does take some intelligence, but one shouldn't really care if he loses since there is literally nothing to be gained other than bragging rights, if there are any anyway.
You shouldn't care if I insulted your mental abilities unless you're on serious meds and are sensitive about the subject, and if you are, or if you are really offended by that, then I'm sorry, brochacho
See, I'm not calling you bro, since I don't consider you to be remotely a "bro" or even an online friend at best. Brochacho is just..a phrase tossed in randomly for the lulz..as is brodilio, brosagna, brock, broseph, brohemian, and the like. Sorry if that also took a toll on your feelings, broho I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.
Hmm, slightly better. You avoided insulting my intelligence, but still attacked my mental state of mind.
You said it was going to create more activity. Having the same posters post a half dozen more times per day is hardly more activity.
Again, the fact that the idea was finally coaxed out of you is not the point. The point is you insulted people for not being, as you say, "psychic". your OP was completely useless with regards to actual useful information, and when people asked for it, you implied they must be stupid if they didn't get it.
Bragging rights matter to some people. I mean, the Stanley Cup, isn't that just bragging rights?
I'm not offended, no, but last I checked Flaming was against the rules.
I know you don't actually see me as a family member, and I know it is merely an affectation of yours. I also noticed you have used it in every post addressed to me, and was wondering if you were able to avoid it. Apparently not.

Seriously though, if you think I'm absolutely serious if I call someone dumb for not getting my OP, you're really wrong. Since you didn't get it, I won't even bother with this thing. I won't bother explaining anything to such inferior intelligence shown by you minions. Fuck this, I'm out of here". That didn't happen, far from it, in fact. I explained everything, and made everything crystal clear. My OP wasn't useless, it had everything stated and all the information present. Some, like yourself, just didn't get it. Others did. This is like the Physiology tests I used to take last semester. People got an 18/100, but some others got a 95/100. If a person got a 95, then the subject matter was explained perfectly, and such a grade should be attainable by anyone in the course. This is similar. If some users got it, then my OP was perfectly fine. Some users got it. My OP was perfectly fine. Thank you
