I only took pre-calculus, and that was hard enough for me. Are you getting ready for testing?
I always liked math, although its amazing during my physics and circuits classes there was always some sort of math that they used to teach the course but I didn't know yet.
I've taken Calculus 1, 2, and 3, and differential equations.
However the diff eq teacher was an independent study and he basically taught me wood working and how to draw. lol

It's done this way because it works. Psychologically we like having a set date. If you don't believe me go look at athletics. That is a prime example with tangible results based upon workouts that are systematic, in cycles, and ALWAYS start on monday. Take any sport on any level and ask the athlete what day their training begins whether it be the beginning of the season or conditioning. It's always monday, that first day. Likewise, a new years resolution holds true to the same principle. It's much easier psychologically to start something on a set date and continue to hold true to the goal.
It's not that they are simply waiting for the new year to do something. The new year marks a period change that represents a fresh start numerically. People relate to that numeric refresher and refresh themselves. Basically our brains are saying "Well, if the year can start over, so can I. What can I do to make this year different?" And the idea is that since your starting with the first day of the year you can progress with the year and continue toward your goal with numeric structure.
