It depends a lot on the arena sizes imo. When i first saw the pvp videos i was really dissapointed in how small the arena was. Having the entire blood moore to battle on d2 made for more strategic play, especially in team duels.

posted a message on How much d3 will you actually play?
How much time do you guys actually think you will end up spending on d3? I spent a stupid amount of time on d2. It was not uncommon for me to spend entire weeks during my school summer vacations doing nothing but playing d2 (how cool was I?!). However that was then. Now I am 23 and am working full time (as a software engineer. and yes, we work ridiculous hours at times). As hyped and excited as I am about d3 I really cant see myself getting hooked to it like I was with d2 just because of all of my other commitments.

I imagine that a lot of the hardcore d3 fans are in a similar position as me, people played d1 and d2 during their school/high school years when they had a lot of free time and have now grown up.

So how much/how often do you guys except to play d3?

well grabbing a gg name is the biggest deal when a game like this is released. really good names can easily be sold for a solid amount of $ later on.

posted a message on Seven Skill Limit Worry
I think the rune mechanics will turn out to be an important factor. As the game gets older and builds become more refined people will realise that some runes will be better for certain situations than others. When people realise this, I wonder if the game mechanics will make it easy enough to quickly swap out one rune for another in game. For example, you are clearing a certain act boss, you use a multistrike type of rune to kill the many minions, then switch out to a power type of rune on the same skills when it comes to killing the boss. Even with the 7 skills, the combinations that you can get out of all of the runes with 7 skills will be huge, especially if you can quickly swap out your runes on a situational basis as I described above.

very interesting idea. The more that I think about it the more it seems that D3 is a PERFECT game for a dota like game. I mean the whole idea of gaining XP, killing creeps, getting items is what d3 is all about. I think it would be amazing to have.

But of course for this to happen that means that there would need to be some sort of Diablo3 Map Editor tool like there was for sc2 and wc3 so that these custom games can be created in the first place. Has there been any word on this?

posted a message on Will you quit other games when d3 comes?
I wonder how d3 will impact the sc2 community. Clearly d3 will have its strongest appeal to casual gamers. After all, d3 is a dungeon creeper game which will be mostly a low stress game. Something that you can do while chatting etc if you wish to. Currently sc2 does have a lot of casual gamers that tend to gravitate to the less stressful 4v4 and 3v3s. However I feel that the diablo universe will offer a much better gaming experience for the sc2 causal gamers in terms of being able to socialize and relax during the game.

posted a message on PVP Builds
It really depends on your build AND your personal style. For example lets take a look at sorcs in d2. ( mind you I only played d2 between release - 1.09 and was purely focused on building PvP builds). You could build a fireball/hydra sorc and kill people by maintaining distance from people, lurking around the edges and sniping them with fireball and controlling their position with hydra. OR, you can use the exact same fireball/hydra sorc and play it like you are Rambo, just teleport ontop of people and blast them with fireball. Obviously in the first case you would want more FCR/mana/regen gear whilst in the second case you want a lot of DR gear with max-block etc. So you can see how the exact same class and same skill build can be used in very different ways.

Remember this is not an MMO so there will be ALOT more mechanics that are possible in PvP. This means that the best build will not necessarily win the battle. Skill, control of your character and the overall strength of your strategy will be the major factor.

posted a message on Is Blizzard losing the magic?
Yes I agree that Bnet 2 is reeeeally lacking. I mean, just the fact that you need to be playing an actual game to have access to your friends list and messaging is a problem. Steam's system is much better in how you can use steam friends to communicate outside of a game. I hate having to launch a game just to see if somebody is online.

However I dont really agree with your arguments about SC2. RTS games like SC2 are all about balance. The reason that shit hit the fan when the beta came out was because the races were just really unbalanced. Game balance with RTS games takes a long time, you cannot expect the beta to be a balanced game. On top of that, we are comparing SC2 to the balance of SC1 which has been refined for over 10 years. If you take a look at the balance of the three races as it currently is, most professional players feel that the balance is almost perfect however that the current map pool is unfavourable to zerg due to short rush distances ( which blizzard are looking into by experimenting with larger maps).

posted a message on A little puzzled at the anger/frustration
looks like ill be getting in a few extra months of SC2.

people who are claiming that the dev team has been lazy are jumping the gun a bit. you have to consider the development process of d3. they would be following a very agile approach. ALOT of things that they build probably end up having to be scrapped and rebuilt in a different way because they would test it out in the game and then change their minds about the feature. Just take a look at how many times the inventory has changed. who knows how many iterations everything else has gone through.

Personally I tend to stick to one game at a time and dedicate myself to becoming good at that game. I dont like hoping around from game to game. I am currently playing sc2 in my wait for d3 and I think that I will most likely stop playing sc2 when d3 comes out. How about you guys, will anybody else here be dropping their current games to dedicate themselves to d3?

posted a message on What will be your endgame?
Having a lot of information about the game now I have been thinking about what I will most likely occupy myself with during the endgame. As with d2 the endgame will be very rich with things such as the following:
    PVM
    PVP
    Trading
    Crafting
    Trying different builds
    MF'ing

In d2 I spent most of my time trading and playing an economy type game during the endgame. The trading in d3 should be greatly improved over the very primitive spam channel trading in d2 ( pre-d2jsp days) so I have a feeling that I will once again be a trader more than a player. Although of course it is difficult to predict this without having played the game, for all I know I may LOVE the new PVP system and get hooked.

    Quote from DryIce135
For example, image you are legitimately doing a 8 hour MF session just because you can. An individual notices that your creating similar game names for 8 hours ( because you always name your MF games similarly, again, legitimately). Then as a result of this report you get falsely banned.

No you won't, not if a confirmation CAPTCHA is sent to you that must be answered in 5 minutes or so. It is even possible for a detection program to pull out your history and check what this account actually have been doing for the last few days (PvP, party PvE and other things a bot can't do without causing suspicion), that will further filter out most legitimate farmers. This will not nearly detect all bots (those that are partially player controlled won't be detected), but it is pretty solid when it comes to not catching humans.

Do you honestly think that CAPTCHA is a solution to a problem in a game? What If I am doing endless MF runs on a major act boss which takes longer than 5-10 minutes to fight AND I am in hardcore. I cannot escape the situation safely so I keep fighting while the CAPTCHA is up ( or I will die and loose my character ), the time runs out and my account gets banned? That is a ridiculous suggestion.

Also, you cannot ban people by playing behaviors that are suspicious. There will be WAY too many false bans. Back in pre-1.08 days I used to go through weeks during the school holidays where I would do 4-5 hour sessions of nothing but mephisto runs every single day, nothing but meph runs, and they all took around the same amount of time to complete. According to your logic my account would have been banned because I exhibited bot like behavior. Ridiculous. You cannot ban people on these gut feelings, you need something solid. People are paying good money for the game, you cannot ban their account for being sus. While we are at it lets go an VAC ban everybody in CSS who gets more than 3 headshots in a row.

Stopping bots will be close to impossible. Bliz will have a very strict protocol about what results in a ban of your account/cd-key. A strict protocol is needed to avoid false positives. As such things like a reporting system will NEVER work. For example, image you are legitimately doing a 8 hour MF session just because you can. An individual notices that your creating similar game names for 8 hours ( because you always name your MF games similarly, again, legitimately). Then as a result of this report you get falsely banned.

Its the same with valve games, if a top competitive pro in an fps game ( say CSS, tf2,cs etc) joins a public game, every second person in the sever thinks that they are hacking when they are actually legit. This is why VAC bans cannot be issued by reporting someone.

There will likely be a system which scans the game for modifications to the game's memory and for modules being injected into the game. However even these systems need to have a strict protocol about what will trigger a ban. A lot of legit programs attach themselves to a process. For example the gaming recording tool FRAPS is an example. Publicly released bots/hooks for games can be easily detected because you can reverse the hook with a debugger and find things like string literals that you can scan for. However if someone has built a private bot/hook for themselves then obviously bliz cannot do much about it unless their method is crude ( directly manipulating memory ).

So basically the strict protocol that Bliz has to avoid false bans will ultimately lead to bots being around in the game, nothing can be done.

posted a message on This game looks more like Diablo 3 than the ACTUAL Diablo 3. C'mon, Blizzard..
The 'feel' of D3 gets darker and darker as you progress through the game ( go further into the depths of hell). Anyone who thinks that D3 is too colorful and bright needs to look at the blizcon 2010 videos of the demonhunter ripping it up in the dungeons. The vibe in those dungeons was very dark and diablo'ish.

Its the same with Diablo2. Its like if you were to look at a screenshot of blood moore. There is not a single scary or dark looking thing about that place. But then look at the River of Flame or the barracks and suddenly things are very different.
