If the game is too easy, turn up the difficulty...
I believe his concern was he believed he couldn't turn up the difficulty. Probably a bad result on a search. I could see it happening, since there are some difficulty modes which require beating the game to unlock. That having been said, there are several appropriate difficulties available from the get go.
Playing through the game on Normal Mode will likely be a faceroll experience until later levels, however...You should have the option to change the difficulty of the game up to Expert mode, maybe Master, I forget what unlocks when. Master may be after defeating Diablo?
If you leave the game you're currently in, you can go to game settings and there's a pane for difficulty. The way difficulty works in Diablo is a risk/reward system. Normal is the base (very easy) mode. Upgrading to Hard will increase the health and damage of monsters, but also increase the experience and gold you find. You can continue from Hard to Expert, which will increase these further. Master will have the same effect, and after beating the game, you'll unlock the Torment difficulties.
It's kind of a pain not being able to switch to Torment, but at the same time, Torment is a pretty huge ramp up from Normal mode. Just an aside to what someone said earlier, there is no Easy Mode any more. Normal is the first difficulty level. Here are some numbers for you from the D3 site, they should be up to date or at least close to accurate:
PC AND ULTIMATE EVIL EDITION DIFFICULTY LEVELS[/header]

So you can see on Master, mobs have about 3x their base health and deal double damage. As you level the enemies around you will level as well and as they level, their damage will scale up on its own compared to what you're seeing now. As for the difficulties unlocked after you've beaten the game, just look at Torment 1, mobs have 8x their base health and deal quadruple damage. It gets absurd not long after there, where on Torment 6, the highest level you can ever set a game to for a character under level 70, monsters have ~86 times as much health and deal ~25 times as much damage. In short, you need some twinked gear in order to deal with that.
TL/DR, check out the game settings button on the character screen before you actually go into your game. On the right side you should see a Difficulty pane, and can change it out. Yes, many of the difficulties are unavailable until you beat the game, but those difficulties are intended for after you've geared up. Leveling on Expert/Master should be a fairly solid challenge for a new player without access to high level gems, etc.
