Just looked at the 1.0.5 ptr patch notes, seems as if every skill people use to proc CM currently has had its proc coefficients almost halved... any insights as to how this will affect cm as a viable progression spec?
For all real purposes for people with less than 1 billion in gear (not exag. but actual amount in gold), there is no cm build now, and it should be assumed that if anything else is found in the garbage heap that works, that it will be nerfed as well.
Which leaves 1 viable build for the entire class, archon, which should be easy to transition to as every single wizard will be running it by the end of the day.
Did you see the patch updates today? They nerfed all meteor and spectral blades.. There is literally nothing left that procs LOH or APOC any more at anywhere near a useful rate.
Yeah, several hundred million in gear will probably make it half work for a few stubborns, but they would rediculously better off to put that time and effort into any other class.

WW is still a viable CM proccing skill. Everyone was jumping on the meteor bandwagon because it had a decent proc rate but did more damage. Now if you choose meteor, it seems it will be mainly for dps whereas WW is used for procs.

I saw some streams with ppl playing metheor/chain reaction... it was insane dps... but felt kinda broken... saw them destroying packs on ml10 in a matter of seconds.
I guess the definition of "works fine" is billions of gold in gear to get above MP3. They really are trying to make me quit this game.

This build costs less than 5 mil now
Discussing future builds not present builds brosef, glad you are following along.
They essentially increased the gear requirement by a factor of four for energy twister, and that is still stronger than the new coefficients on meteor, and I laughed a little inside when they nerfed spectral blades because comparatively it is terrible.
CC locking breaks higher monster power settings which is likely the motivation for these nerfs, but nerfing the coefficient instead of the CC lock is breaking the builds at the low end. Its an unavoidable cost of their lazy programming making every remotely RNG element of their game dependant on a single static coefficient for each spell. This after they released a block saying infinite CC builds would be watched but wouldn't be changed in 1.0.5.

I'm not so sure that spectral blades is being nerfed. They are increasing damage from 135% to 165% and the range from 10 yards to 15 yards. The range will increase the number of proc attempts, thus the decrease in proc chance to keep it even. Still an overall buff to spectral blades. If you also take into account some of the changes to the runes like removing crit requirement for healing blades it seems to make it a little more viable for low-level, survival builds.
With your math and logic, there is nothing to discus with you. And I doubt that you saw at least 5% of change log. Just drop this game.
I really hope you're trying to be ironic with that first statement or there is probably no use in trying to explain the principal to you if you think "evrtm i rid tis" is a coherent form of communication.
It is reasonably cheap to get a basic set to use critical mass build on live, I don't disagree. However live builds perform very well with respect to gear required. You can easily farm act 3 with under 2 million gold worth of gear (and I have seen videos of sets produced for under 1 million performing reasonably in act 3). However, to get the same performance using energy twister on the PTR that you get out of live strom chaser requires you to generate 4 times as many ticks (since ET has 1/4th the coefficient) and since the nerfs to meteor it remains the most effective proc producing skill in the wizard arsenal. Assuming 35% crit, and 1.5 attack speed would do the trick before, it would now take 70% crit, and 3.0 attack speed to get the same level or performance. I don't think I really need to tell you that 70% crit and 3.0 attack speed is actually not possible with current gear (somewhere around 60% crit is the unbuffed maximum and you could add 8% to energy twister specifically and get close). So billions of gold in gear for the same performance is hyperbole I grant you.
Now what I assume you are getting at is part and parcel with these changes comes a nerf to inferno (and if you've played on the PTR as I have, a substantial one). However, the bottom line is this. Any build that could do act 3 before can do act 3 on MP3 on the PTR if it wasn't nerfed, or act 1 on MP4 or 5, however critical mass basically can't. If you want to say too bad, go down to MP1 and farm there, well you don't need critical mass there, its like playing in act 3 hell is now, just stack damage and nuke everything, you don't even need diamond skin let alone critical mass.
I liked the frantic pace of CM builds, and the idea of being able to leverage syngery to out perform my gear level. Thats gone now, there is essentially no reason to use critical mass, its not effective enough for high monster power and not necessary at low monster power.
I am using the same CM build as i do on live, but i changed the Magic Weapon rune from Force Weapon to Blood Magic. And i have been using Force Armor on live, i dont remember why, but i'm currently using Prismatic Armor on PTR. Yeah it takes a bit longer to farm A3, but come on, it was WAY too easy. Anyone that has played any game for more than 14 days should know that this was gonna get the nerfbat, just like early hunters and WW barbs.

And for the monster level. Yes i am only on MP 3 for now. I am happy i have new goals to farm for now.
Nerfed to the ground. Sure u can semi stun lock mobs if u have over 2 as and 50% crit, along with 25+ apoc, but the dps is a joke now in the ptr because the procs went to teh ground, therefore shocking aspect is a lot weaker. It will be used as a support char in coop with other super high DPS chars for MP10 key hunting imo, everything else at lower levels an archon spec will out perform by very large margin....
I just farmed a key on MP10 on the PTR with the new changes... I had to switch to WW from meteor, and with WW, 1.7 attack speed, 45% crit and 17 APOC I was able to stunlock single elites, but man it is SLOW. Even with 120k DPS it took me forever to kill the keywarden.
I agree with the fact that a nerf was expected. CM is very strong and now viable for 1 or 2M but I'm not sure they took the right choices to nerf it. GIving a try to PTR later today and see how it works now. It will be sad tho to see everyone on archon
This probably doesn't appease anyone but my guess for the reason they nerfed all the coefficients is in part due to the proc on the new craftable ring. With things the way they are, the ring would proc far too often for those skills with really high coefficients and my understanding is the proc on the ring hits for A LOT.
Yeah... Every time something fun comes around they kill it. It's so hard to keep playing. Blizz has been making me sick with all the awesome changes they've made recently

This is a good point... maybe once I get the first hellfire ring farming the rest won't be so bad if WW is proccing it very quickly.

CM Wizard still works fine.
