So I just reinstalled Diablo 2, seeing as how I just joined here and all, and it claims my CD key is not approved for online use, or some such bullcrap. What do I need to do to get it approved for online use?
You're absolutely sure the CD key you typed matches the real thing perfectly?
Or does it not let you load it unless it matches? I haven't reinstalled in a while. Have you tried reinstalling your new installation? A bit redundant, but it might work!
I was pretty sure that the message when you're banned is way more specific, as in it actually includes a word like "banned" in it. This message looks more like its telling you the cd-key doesn't even seem to exist.
An interesting note. Now it merely says "Cannot connect to Battle.net", but if I switch realms, it gives me the above message once, before going back to "Cannot connect to Battle.net".
Also, I am the only one who has used this key, and neither the key, nor the IP associated with it has, to my knowledge, been banned.
And lastly, I have seen a ban message. This is not a ban message. This is the game claiming my key doesn't exist, despite it being the one I used 1-2 years ago when playing with people on this site.
I'll try that when I get back to my computer. I'll also note that the only change since I last played is a new video card and a new router, but I see no reason why either of those would make the game itself display a different message.
IIRC: If scour through google some you can find a couple of cd-keys to use if you want to install the game, but they don't work on B.net, like they were made with a keygen only to bypass the cdkey safeguard. I think that was the message I recieved when I did that a couple of years ago. Can't really vouch for it, but it sure sounds like it.

That might be it, if it wasn't for the fact that I copied it directly from my case.
Well a new router can cause a lot of trouble, believe me.
I would suggest forwarding the ports that Diablo needs for multiplayer, also recheck your firewall and other antivirus programs.
If those programs got updates they might just have messed up and started blocking Diablo.
It seems to me that the game simply can not connect to battle.net.
Although I tried running it with it in the exceptions, and running it with my antivirus off, and no firewalls running, it did not work. My ports are already forwarded, as far as Diablo 2.
Some other things that might help (even though the above are more likely to do so):
- Reinstall the game, as a file might have been changed. (Virus, idiot children, a mod you forgot about etc.)
I am the idiot child Also, this occurred after a totally clean install. There was no Diablo 2, I installed it, I opened it and went to battle.net. It, oddly enough, downloaded the newest patch, then wouldn't let me connect and displayed the error above.
- Throw kitties at your computer screen.
Willing to try anything at this point...
So, to recap, I installed Diablo 2 using the disks I had lying around. I proceeded to then install Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction using my disk. both were installed using the disks themselves and the 16-digit CD key on the packaging, not the Blizzard downloader. I then opened Diablo 2: LoD and clicked on the battle.net option. It downloaded the patch and prompted me to restart Diablo 2. I did so, and clicked on Battle.net again. It gave the above error. I clicked on it again, and it gave the generic "Cannot connect to Battle.net" message. I changed realms, and it gave the above error. A second attempt on this second realm gave the generic response again. Switching back to the first realm, I tried again, got the above error and gave up that. I have tried with the firewall and antivirus disabled, with no changes. At that point, I made this thread and downloaded Median XL, a mod that only changes the patch.mpq file, and have been playing that since.
it means your cd key is banned; u need a new one to play.
someone either keygenned a cd key like yours and got banned, or you have a widely circulating cd key that was sold or something. it happens to bootlegged versions of D2 where the manual will give out the same cd key for every copy, allowing you to play single player but not bnet.
hopefully u can find a fix, otherwise, its this.
if your installing from the CDs, uninstall and try downloading the games from blizzard instead. but if the cd key is banned, youre out of luck there too

Have you been banned? Have you seen the ban screen? Because the ban screens I have seen say "Your account has been closed (8)" for an account ban, "Your connection has temporarily been restricted from this realm, Please try to log on at another time" for a temp ban and a CD-Key ban seems to say "Your CD key is disabled from realm play", according to the Blizzard support website. My message is none of those, and doesn't even resemble any of them. Please don't post fiction as fact. If you aren't sure, say so.
EDIT: Poking around the support website, I didn't even find that error message. Odd.

That right there.

EDIT: Bah, same deal. This annoys me.
sofawall ... I remember you!
I see no reason why I would be banned, I've never used a cracked .exe or maphacked or anything. Either way, I'm just playing Median XL.
