That still does not make it "alive", same as a metabolism. It is simply just a just a property of all the molecular processes that are going on inside you right now.
If it's just a molecular property than please describe to me how it works.
Metabolism is a pretty understood thing.
Err, what? Don't know what stupid sayings have to do with my point. Pain itself is a process but that's irrelevant. It can be pain, joy, mere sight, doesn't matter what it is, point is that it doesn't just go into the brain and stop there (or else you would never be able to acknowledge that you are reading my post, a robot would be reading it, and you wouldn't exist), it goes somewhere else, hence sentience.
What separates a living rock that thinks it feels pain from a living rock that feels the same feelings but "actually" feels the pain?
You can fake all the feelings (pain, fear, etc.) - this is the reason why waterboarding is so effective a torture method. It gives a real sense of drowning without actually drowning the person in question. You can also have pain without a "real" cause for it (several brain diseases cause this, for example).
The fact that there can never ever be anything behind the rock that thinks it feels pain. There is something behind the living rock.
You're getting carried away with the term "pain" and "feeling". I use those as examples to explain my point, which I find nearly impossible to explain because of how ethereal it is. The point though is not that pain or w/e exists, it's that these things get received by something beyond our brain.
That is my personal problem which (along similar problems) has led me to the conclusion that there is no soul. We are complex biological machines - capable of making decisions however. We are forever limited by the biological capability of our brains.
If you lack the introspection to realize you are sentient, I cannot help you. Sentience is unprovable.
My question stands. a) How does any of that prove it's alive; b)why is any of that necessary for life.
a) it fulfills a definition, one that most people accept, regardless of whether or not you do.
organisms need to do something that distinguishes it from dirt and debris. going back to (a).
all those things i mentioned above that life can do, makes it quite extraordinary. perhaps even evidence for the existence of some divine creator, after all, the odds were against us heavily.

Everything in life is just a really complex molecular properties, because everything is made up of molecules. Molecules are really the most complex atomic combination, and it everything else is just "teamwork". Like a soccer team. You can make the argument that alone, the soccer team cannot win, but if it works as a team, it wins. It really works the same way (but a lot more complex).

youre going into some scifi philoso-blabbery that has nothing to do with biology
I believe I said that at the very beginning when I mentioned the whole receptor thing. It's philosophical (religious, if you will), not scientific, and I think science is useless here. I also believe biologists have used an extremely wrong word for "living" organisms. Life defines something that exists with or without biologists, and they have no business defining it for everyone else. I defined it my own way, I believe it's correct, I don't care how many Ph. D.'s you have that question is outside the scope of our science.
You asked. Now you're unhappy that you have absolutely no freaking clue wtf am I trying to say.
When are you two gonna bring out the oil, take your clothes off, and start wrestling?
On a more serious note, everything that Apples is saying makes perfect sense. You're all just..I don't know what the hell it is that you're doing. You're going with these unbelievable tangents that pretty much make no sense in this argument, really. It's really simple. Biologists classified organisms to make it easy to track them down, know what they are, know their traits and characteristics, and basically know everything there is to know about them, really quickly, and really efficiently. Why shouldn't Biologists define something? You're pretty much putting all science under scrutiny and questioning the very fabric of it with that statement. Why do Physicist define things? Why do Chemists define things? Why does science define things? Uhh..because things need to be defined? Not everyone is as smart as you Equinox, us simpletons need science to define certain things for us so we can go by them in our everyday life. Some of us need those lowly definitions and findings to be able to do our jobs to the best of our ability. If I didn't know all the things Biology brought into the scientific field, and the world as a whole, I'd be useless as a lab scientists. I'd be useless at knowing what kind of disease, parasite..etc someone has. I'm sorry, but I must have missed the part in Genesis that says "If thou has leukemia, say 58 hail Mary's, and thou shalt be cured by the grace of the Lord". Religion has no place here, and that's coming from me.
really theres no need to get emotional for this. i like science but at the same time i go to a church group some thursday nights.
ive just been stating things that ive been taught or read about; i dont think im qualified enough to make my own groundbreaking, earthshattering revelations...yet
biologists have a job, and our job is to unravel some of the secrets of nature, in doing so we come up with all sorts of ethical/moral and philosophical dilemmas for ourselves but thats for the politicians to worry over.
but trust me, next time i get sick ill goto the doctor and ask him if i have a soul before anything else, otherwise i might not be alive, and he wouldnt have to, you know, do his job.

Well then, this discussion is about to get interesting.
Here are some questions I want you to answer:
Do you believe in evolution?
Do you believe in young earth creationism?
Do you believe in Noah's flood?
Do you interpret the Bible literally and exact?
Do you believe that being homosexual is a sin?
Please answer why as well.
I believe in Evolution, God put whatever was first and it evolved that doesn't disprove that theres a god or not so that question is pointless and meaningless.
I don't know what young earth creationism is so i can not comment.
Yes i believe in Noah's flood to an extent. I believe it was a big flood yet not on the scale the bible says. Look at Pakistanis flood today its a huge flood of epic proportions yet it is not in the sky as said in the bible.
I do not interpret the bible literally and exact. I believe that god put us here but not in the way that it has been stated nor do I take literally Noah's flood as I stated earlier. I do however take the entire new testament of the bible literally, excluding all parts where God has talked to man. Everything else I believe in fully.
I do not believe homosexuality is a sin. It is how a person is born therefore can not be sin.

Meaningless? I was merely asking a question. I'm not attacking you, I was simply asking something.
Whether it disproves God or not, adding God to the equation cannot make it scientific (I am not saying you said this). Adding God to scientific only substitutes one unknown with another.
I don't know what young earth creationism is so i can not comment.
Young Earth Creationism is the long way of saying Creationism. It is saying that the Earth was born very recent and with all the species intact with all their part intact (fish with gills, birds with feathers and wings, etc). It is the religious argument against evolution in other words.
Yes i believe in Noah's flood to an extent. I believe it was a big flood yet not on the scale the bible says. Look at Pakistanis flood today its a huge flood of epic proportions yet it is not in the sky as said in the bible.
If a flood was put onto the Earth to kill everything and everyone who wasn't on the ark it would be impossible for life to exist afterward.
First off, you need hundreds and hundreds or workers to make an ark of that magnitude to withstand water in every way, a task that only modern day science allows us to do. Noah would have to be a selfish king to force hundreds of workers to sacrifice themselves to build a gigantic ark that they cannot board, an act that is probably not worthy of the bible.
Second, during the flood, inside the ark it would come to be an impossible environment for anyone or anything to live in. For one, if the bible said that 2 of every animal on the Earth came to the ark (a task that would also seem impossible), the food would quickly disappear, and you are also forgetting that animals eat other animals. How do you keep animals from attacking each other? Cages? Then how do you feed carnivores? Also have you ever heard what happened to people and animals on a ship during a storm? Disease. You would have to fight the absolute freezing temperature of the storm and find a way to keep everything there from not getting sick, which in itself would be impossible. Back them, a simple cold would kill you. If one animal or human gets any virus, it'll spread ridiculously fast.
Third, you have after the storm. You come back from the storm and you see the Earth in ruins. No food, animals, etc. Just a bunch of rocks across the huge wasteland. What do you do now? Nothing. You starve. The end of the world would be inevitable, along with the diseased animals and Noah.
I do not interpret the bible literally and exact. I believe that god put us here but not in the way that it has been stated nor do I take literally Noah's flood as I stated earlier. I do however take the entire new testament of the bible literally, excluding all parts where God has talked to man. Everything else I believe in fully.
The Bible is not actually the true word of God. In fact, the gospels have been put together by a group of priests who actually decided what the gospels should be, out of the hundreds and hundreds of gospels there are out there. The entire Old Testament could actually use metaphors, just like Jesus's parables. They can be simple stories to teach, and not the actual account of what happened.
I believe in Evolution, God put whatever was first and it evolved that doesn't disprove that theres a god or not so that question is pointless and meaningless.

Thank you.
To young earth creationism. HELL NO, I believe in God but honestly there are facts you can't simply ignore facts. If i find a fossil and carbon date it to 14 million years ago how are you going to disprove that. It simply can't be done.
To the flood response i never said I believed it wiped out all of the world. I said i believed it to an extent. The place that all this took place was the middle east, I made a reference to the Pakistanis flood because this is how i think it was. The floods stopped at a certain point and beyond that there was still thriving life. But in the flood zone mostly everything was destroyed and people lost their lives. Being on the ark(not with all these animals)would raise your chances of survival. They could have gathered enough food to survive and drifted to where they could restart life again.
I did not realize you weren't attacking me I am sorry for saying it is meaningless, what i meant to say was that there can be evolution and a God. Just simply that God put whatever came first and it evolved to what we are now.

It doesn't matter what you think, it doesn't matter what you believe, religion is religion. If religion says X is a sin, it's a sin, and it doesn't care if you abide by it or not. You'd be sinning if you violated it, quite simply.
I'm not reflecting my OWN opinion, I'm reflecting fact. If you ask me, I don't give two shits about what a person does. I don't give a shit if he fucks a girl, a guy, a dog, or a watermelon. It's his life, it's his decision. What "I" believe in, should not be reflected unto him. I should not judge him, berate him, nor should I have a violent, disrespectful, demeaning, or disgracing conduct when I communicate with him. What he does is of his own volition. They're his decisions, not mine. If religion says that he will pay for his homosexuality, I don't care, because simply put, I myself aren't a homosexual. I don't know the person. I don't pretend that I know the person. For all I know, he's gay, yet he prays everyday, does everything he can to get closer to God, but he can't help the fact that he's gay, and asks God for his forgiveness/understanding/whatever. On the other hand, if religion says don't drink alcohol, I don't care, because I like alcohol, and I do what I can and what I'm capable of religiousness-wise. I do what I can to repent and do things that can hopefully make up for my shortcomings. I am, however, completely against a completely carefree life. A life of complete and utter fornication. I'm no saint. I drink, I smoke, I mess around with girls, I watch porn, I curse, I do all these things. But, I also pray, fast, read scripture every night before I sleep, and do all the things that I can. I can't bring myself to believe that we're only here to have fun, fuck around, live life, then die and that's that.
