Path of Exile is a point and click, Action Role Playing Game, similar to games like Diablo, Torchlight, and Titan Quest. You point your cursor at an enemy, click, and attack. It is being developed by Grinding Gears Games for the PC, with Mac support being a possibility in the future. It sports six classes, of which the five that have been announced being the Witch, the Duelist, the Ranger, the Marauder, and the Templar. The classes do not learn active skills, like frost nova, but rather, passive skills, like Increaed Mana. The active skills are gained through socketing a gem like item into the gear. (No worries, the gems can be removed.) The passive Skill Tree is an expansive tree that can be called nothing less then colossal. In addition, each class can choose to go with strength, intellect, or dexterity talents, but they gain less from the skills that are not designed for them.
The Story of Path of Exile, while not being complete yet, is that the character was exiled from their homelands (Each class has his or her own reason for the exile, for example, the Witch was exiled due to the fear of her powers), and you find yourself on what appears to be the deserted beach of Wraeclast. Things are not always what they appear, however, and you soon find yourself waist deep in zombies and other creatures of unimaginable horror. After defeating the first mini-boss, you stop in at the Shore Encampment, trading goods with other exiles. Then you head into the unknown, trying simply to survive. Grinding Gear Games is currently working to increase the scope and size of the story, though nothing more has been added to the Beta as of the writing of this Preview.
On to the Graphics. I simply cannot say enough of how absolutely beautiful the game is. It is obviously a very polished game, with the shadows and the monsters looking absolutely astonishing. The attacks look and feel as though they are real, without being overtly visual. The spells and attacks look well thought out. The armor and weapons look as though they could exist in the real world. It truly is gorgeous.
There are, of course, some bugs. But this is Beta, and Beta is Beta, so that is bound to happen. Grinding Gear Games seem to be working as best they can to get all the bugs and issues out. That being said, the bugs are few and far in between.
An interesting route Path of Exile has taken, there is no gold. Rather, you trade a Scroll of Wisdom or a Scroll of Town for an item. Because these items are both used to buy goods as well as for identifying items and what not, the issue of inflation does not seem as though it will plague Path of Exile in any great deal.
Additionally, there are Leagues, which are alternative rules and ways to play the game. There is the default league, the Hard Core league, the Iron Man league, the Cut Throat league, and the Attrition league. For a nominal fee, players can pay to have a custom, private league created for them. Add in the multiple planned difficulty levels, and the planned level 100 character cap, along with the free to play business model, and you will be playing for a long, long time.
All in all, if Grinding Gear Games continues on the path they are currently on, I would recommend this whole heatedly to anybody and everybody. And remember, beta is beta. Things can always change.
will give up my account. got into the beta and it was an epic fail. horrible gameplay horrid looking graphics and very bad systems for attributes and skills. i was so excited to play this and thought it looked decent but the truth is its just not a good game, free or not. :/

Played the beta and it was pretty entertaining... Except for the bugs. Oh and the camera angle is just bad. Its zoomed in too much, making your character look like shit.
On the PoE forum some talk about Diablo 3 being "bad", in like; "Diablo 3 is not worth my time, PoE is waaay better" etc.
I have come to the conclusion that people that speak in this way are so hardcore Diablo 2 fans that they cant comprehend the fact that Diablo is evolving. Diablo 3 is the result of Diablo 1, Diablo 2 and expansions.
I have the Beta for PoE but are waiting on Diablo 3 - the king of A-RPG. PoE is a great time-spender, but It feels like a good Diablo 2 clone, not something thats similar to Diablo 3.

people hate change enkeria. honestly and truly most people absolute despise change EVEN if its for the better. this is human nature and its gay. lol. logical beings such as me and you recognize that change can in fact be good and in the case of D3 i personally think damn near every change/removal from D2 to D3 was spot on and i cant wait to experience it. (removal of pot spamming, skill trees, gambler, immune monsters, attributes, boss farming ect)

Just wait till their free to play game is infested with botters cheaters and other hackers or just pay to win items. Then over time we will see what game is better.
ive played the POE beta and now that ive played the D3 beta its light years ahead of POE. poe skill system/attribute system /graphics/gameplay are all very inferior to D3's.

Well I see a very postive response to this game and all the D3 Beta players are talking about the game being boring and taking away all the the elements of the original game.

i havent seen many posative responses from POE. and the D3 beta is 1/48th of the full game. OF COURSE its boring, its insanely short because they are hiding the rest of the game and only using the beta as a stress test. and everything that was changed from D2 was for the better.
here is a quote from something i posted before about it
considering they have almost NONE of the core (fail) features from D2 i cant possibly see how anyone can compare them like that.
things D3 doesnt have from D2:
pot spamming, gambler, skill trees, attribute distribution, runestones, tp scrolls, identify scrolls, limited number of bolts/arrows, fail mercenaries, trade games, boss runs, hostiling (lawl)
things added to D3 that arent in D2:
rune skill system, changing skills on the fly, blacksmith, jeweler, game-wide farming, GAH, RMAH, achievements, better stat effects, health globes, far better graphics (obv) , every class has its own resource system w/ individual attributes to them, 100x more viable builds, all skills wpn dmg based, mercenary skill choices, inferno mode, individual loot, pvp arena's
I've played PoE beta until high level (40's). It's decent game and i wish GGG good luck. The best thing about PoE is the massive skill grind, it's really fun.
But i think theres little replayability in that game. I've played 3 of the 5 characters they all feels the same (spam AoEs and drink potions). PoE is miles away from D3 in terms of design.
I've been in their beta since early September 2011, I've played it off and on if I didn't have anything else to do. I've cleared Merciless difficulty and clear Maelstorm fairly sucessfully, death is a rare occasion.
I'm not sure if their crafting system can scale up to the level cap of 100 as is, current item level and mod tiers are capped at 60, farming for orbs to reroll your iL60 base item for current [your level] relevant modifiers and after going through 200 re-rolls all you get out of it is the feeling of despair. I think Median XL faired better with their crafting system in the short term while they[GGG] aim for hooking you for the long term, I only wished they had an easier way to get rid of crafting materials we no longer need other than more ID scrolls which I have more than enough of.
Passives tree can seem intimidating but after you learn most/all the mechanics and know what you wanna do with which class, then you can make 'your character' which is kind of a let down for new players, the learning the mechanics then figuring out you don't like the way it turned out part. There are no passives resets but they will refund you points via items or quests which is ok if you picked up a 'keystone' passive but decide not to use.
I'm not sure what's going to happen when they hit open beta and the outposts are flooded with people and you cannot see yourself, how would you trade with others?
It's an OK free to play game, but if things stay the way they are you're better off with mediocre gear and selling your crafting materials via 3rd party.
Here's a prime example
Out of all the possible modifiers, this person got two high damage% modifiers*, you can get 3 prefix and 3 suffix rares just like Diablo 2 except in Path of Exile you can get more than one modifier from the same group of modifiers, which is not possible in Diablo 2. You could potentionally roll a rare weapon with 3 damage% prefixes (330-387%) and 3 IAS% suffixes (78-87%), I'm not a mathematician but those odds seem on par or worse than a casino.
*after counting the mods I realized he did infact get two high tier modifers but were not from the same group, both iL60 (130 to 149%) and (65 to 74% plus 83 to 99 accuracy).
