Apparently you must be able to see the source of all lighting in a piece of media for it to be good...
Also, green light is not allowed in Diablo.
And shoulder pads must not exceed regulation sizes as set by the huge spikey shoulder pads from Diablo 1 and 2.
And the game needs more "realism", but mist creating a rainbow as it hits the light, as seen in reality, is not allowed.
And if you make the game look as if a gorgeous fantasy painting come to life then you are just copy pasting WoW.
It's just amazing to me how many rules people have made up for the Diablo franchise. You'd think that Blizz needs to just remake D2 in 3D in order to satisfy these people.
The rays of white light are holy light that finally can shine through the den now that it has been purged of evil.
Nobody has been able to justify the nonsense green lighting in any way, other than saying it looks "eerie" or cool.
Well the green light is the one thing that bothers me the most also but saying that you can't justify it is kind of... meh. I mean it's Blizzards game they can add the light if they want.
I mean in the Den of Evil that "holy light" shouldn't be there. Where is it coming from? There are no holes in the ceiling, you can walk all over the field above the Den and there are no holes. Is it just magically appearing? If so, why can't the same be said for the green light but it's from a unholy magic.
I'm not justifying the green light, I just like to see things from both sides of the fence.

At least that light makes sense in some way. Also, it's the ending of a quest and provides needed visual confirmation. It's misleading to compare it in any way to the constant green lighting in the dungeon.

It doesn't make sense to me. What source does it come from? They're BEAMS of light. Like they're coming through holes in the roof, but yet... no holes.
True it's the end of a quest and shows that the Den is "cleansed" but either magic lighting is no more realistic than the other.
Maybe they'll make it so that the green lighting is from the area being corrupted and will disappear once a quest is completed or a boss is killed. That'd be a lot better to me.
Edit: Oh yeah and that's just the tileset for that one "tomb" type of dungeon in the very first act, hopefully the green light will stop there.

It took me 2 seconds to come up with an explanation that makes sense for those rays of light. Even if they were purple with rainbows on either side, they only last for the 10 seconds or so that it takes you to get out of the dungeon once it's been cleansed. It's completely different than an entire dungeon of constant, unexplainable lighting.
I mean, what....corruption leaves a trail of permanent photons that continually rebound off the ground and walls, "eerily"? No, the only way to explain the green lighting is that it looks creepy and sets a certain mood. In a scooby doo movie.
Edit: yeah, I realize it's only the first dungeon. It'll be nice if, despite their public stance, they take a close look at the rest of the game

To me it doesn't matter how long the light is there. They're both coming from no where.
I don't see why you can accept one sourceless light, but not the other.
I mean I know the Den of Evil light was to show that the place was cleansed. It wasn't 100% necessary though, your character SAID it was cleansed once you killed everything and your quest log was updated.
The green light may rub more people the wrong way, including myself, but the mechanics behind it are the same.

Stranger lighting effects have happened. Remember tainted sun? Somehow magic blocked out the sun! The freakin sun! If it can do that then a simple green tinge is nothing. Maybe some of the monsters can see green light more vividly than the other colors, so whoever made the creatures flooded the room with green light. I could come up with endless reasons why the rooms has green light. Maybe there are overhead green lanturns that are out of sight, maybe there are green stained glass windows on the roof of whatever that structure is, or maybe the demons emit a foul cloud of green gasses when they flatulate. Or we could make this easy and say it does not need a reason to exist and leave it at that, either way there is no sense in arguing over it anymore.
And what of the church in D1, with the intense red light shining through the windows? Let me guess, evil aura?
The main difference there is that there could be a light source outside of the church. I can't think of a single instance in Diablos 1 or 2 where unexplained lighting, without light sources no less(!), persists for any significant amount of time. Even in the den of evil shot, the light is coming from either the sun or heaven in the form of a beam; it originates somewhere off screen. The green light of the D3 dungeon is simply there.
Plus, red is the color of Diablo's magic, and the aura of any self-respecting demon.

I just hope Diablo 3 will have areas and sequences that feel as corrupted and evil as approaching the church in Diablo 1 for example, or some of the occurrences within the different levels under the church. But then again Diablo 1 was created years ago, and back then things were raw and hardcore, D1 was both.
Even in the den of evil shot, the light is coming from either the sun or heaven in the form of a beam; it originates somewhere off screen. The green light of the D3 dungeon is simply there.
No... it's not coming from the sun. There are no holes as I pointed out you can walk all you want the only opening to the cave is the entrance.
As for coming from Heaven... that would require a hole in the cave presumably also. Unless you want to say it's just magically coming from Heaven. Which is just as flacid of an argument as the green light is magically coming from hell.
The red light is coming from no where also. It may be an aura of Diablo but it's magical and sourceless. You enter the church and what do we find? No red light.

See why you can't argue with these people?
He just compared D3's lighting to Diablo 1 and 2's - as if that makes some astute point.
And then he constantly sets a double standard as it's ok for Red light to show up because it's just Diablo's magic demon aura thingie...but green light is out of the question because...well because.
You can't convince someone that believes a game from 8-10 years ago is the final word on what a game can look like today. You can't convince someone that makes up rules about magic and auras that green light in a dungeon WORKS from a game design standpoint. He'll just make up some inane reason for why it doesn't work in his next post.
All I know is that sourceless light is a good way to make an area feel more immersive or help flesh out particular characteristics of an area or object such as the church for example. When I saw those red lights I thought it brought out the corruption that has overtaken the church, felt more Epic.
As I said before, at least it's coming from somewhere. As opposed to simply being there. Covering a significant portion of the ground and walls. For an entire dungeon.
Edit: to Dae
btw, I agree in some sense Jordan. Red is a color of evil. Greenish/blue, however, is a scooby doo tactic at best, and a direct WoW transfer at worst.

Light radius is "there" and there is no explanation for its existence. Your character has no torch but, no lantern, no medieval flashlight. But light radius not returning was one of the major complaints about D3.
I didn't know you had a PHD in demonology.

That's just it though, its not coming from somewhere.
It may make the game look better or worse but it has no source.
You enter the church in D1, no red light, no red light source.
You walk around the Blood Moor in D2, no holes for the light to come through into the Den.
You enter the D3 dungeon, green light comes from no where.
The only explanation for all of them is that it's just there to look cool, or it's magic. Either holy magic in the Den's case, or Vile magic in the churches case. In all cases there is still no visible source.

I think you are the one who needs to explain why the green light shouldn't be there.
1. It adds to the atmosphere. It makes the air look sickly and putrid.
2. It helps differentiate the Tombs level from other dungeons in the game. It kills monotony of levels.
3. It adds to the Horror aspect of the game. Green is used in horror movies constantly to evoke mood.
4. It's surreal in a good way as it helps create the illusion of being in a fantasy world.
