As topic implies, BS is redundant, worthless, insert any other synonym here.
I get the random part. Which is completely fine with me. Diablo was always about being random. Even if this is a replacement for gambling, the fact that the AH is in arms reach makes it useless.
There is one simple reason to why BS is not going to be used, by anyone, ever.
It costs gold, a LOT of gold, to make an item.
I don't mind wasting mats. Thats understandable. But waste 30k on a rare crafted item, which is completely random, + THE MATS, is INSANE, not cost worthy, and just plain stupid, since for 30k I can get a GREAT item off the auction house. And thats taking the best case scenario which I will get what I need on the first try. You can try 5-10 times and get nothing, and throw 300k down the drain, without even getting a single good item to even try to sell to get some of the investment back. For 300k I can buy a complete gear set from the AH.
There is a simple fix.
Remove gold cost from crafting. Then there would be a use to spend all the mats we have. Because atm, I don't know anyone who has yet to invest into crafting with the same reason. "Costs too much, I'm just buying on AH".
For a while in the beta BS was godly. You could get two 17 dps weapons at a low lvl, and with the number of blues dropping combined with the low mat and gold cost meant you could roll 10-12 times on a slot items to get the affixes you wanted.
They nerfed it so badly that I regret every piece of gold I invested in him since release. The jeweler is the same thing, you're better off selling three gems at the AH and buying the next one up then paying for the combine.
Here is the best advice for a new player: don't invest in BS and JC, don't salvage anything, sell it for gold instead. Only AH items that will sell fast and buy weapons off the AH every 10 levels. Much easier this way.
I will never use the blacksmith with the current crafting costs. It's just a gold sink. Even at only level 40, I can spend 40k crafting a half decent blue, or I can spend 5k for a nice rare weapon.
crafting was good at the start of the game to quickly replace blues for a small cost. Latter in the game is costs a fortune to level and make anything useful, that you can get things better things from the ah with out spending half the money.
Ironically, I imagine the AH will be pretty dead comes the RMAH. You'll most likely need to use the blacksmith then. It's just a theory, but hey, I might be right.
I will use it when I get the full game. Since I do not like the Auction House.
And that's the sad part, you have to purposefully gimp yourself for the BS to be useful. As many people said above, for a fraction of the gold you spend on BS you can get much better items at the AH.
Ironically, I imagine the AH will be pretty dead comes the RMAH. You'll most likely need to use the blacksmith then. It's just a theory, but hey, I might be right.
That's even more depressing.
It's the more than likely going to happen. Everyone and their mother is going to want to make money from playing Diablo. Gold auction house might have some stuff on there still, but you'll probably see most of the higher end gear on the RMAH.
Yeah, the problem with buffing the BS now is that you're comparing his costs to the AH, which will probably change a LOT later on.
Of course, it's always possible Blizz will just link the BS crafting costs to be some % of the AH cost for similiar level items, which would be cool. We'll see.
But yeah, I'm not going to bother upgrading my BS for the time being anymore.
The gold auction house will still be alive for one reason, gold can be sold for cash and the game has a lot of goldsinks. So have no fear everyone that doesn't want to use the RMAH.
1) the BS allows you to put the bad blue and yellow to good use. Mats are terrible cheap in the AH, crafting using those is much better. So here and there you can craft a few pieces of gear.
2) You gotta keep an eye open. If the the items you just crafted does not suit your class/build, don't throw it allway. If it's a strong item you can sell it in the AH. Selling something you crafted for 1~2k is already great.
3) The BS has a "conservative" item roll. He will never give you super low DPS weapons, but never give you super high roll either. Basically because the base damage/armor is fixed in the avarage. Don't waste gold/mats on the BS trying to get a upgrade in an avarage-good slot. Use it only to upgrade a terrible slot to an avarage level. This is one of the most common miss use of the BS.
4) BS is a long term investment. Gold you spend now wil be fruitful for all your characters in the future. Using 2k gold in the BS OBVIOUSLY has less return then using 2k in the AH. But the money you spend now is basically lost, it just gives you an faster/safer leveling in this present moment. Gold used in the BS will effect all your future.
It's like using +xp mods vs. other mods. +xp items benefits your character even after you have chanaged the item, while getting more stats is wasted as soon as you find a new item. It's a long term vs. short term conflict.
5) This is the BEST momment to earn profit using the BS. Some BS recipes sells like water and are really cheap to make. Since not many are using the BS, theres alot of economic profit in that field (mean low competition in the craft item markets).
I'm pretty happy with my BS. I'm lvl 38 hardcore barb (yeh not that high) and around 1/3 of my gear comes from the BS.
The craft items should have at least 1 guaranteed affixe.
Something like:
Axe
+10 to 50 strength
+2 Random
This would really fix the issues I have with it, it would still be pretty hard to make a perfect roll BUT it would increase the chances of it to be useful. Right now the AH is just so much better. As for it being fare, the AH is really just the same as trading items; just easier.
One of my complaint is that the AH makes low level stuff a bit too easy, especially normal and nightmare. But come inferno, you gotta use the AH to sell your stuff and buy things more suited to your needs.
For some reasons, i hope there's a scenario that blizzard do similar to "We reduced the cost of high-end crafting by alot, but to compensate, we increased the gold cost to upgrade him."
Then people who "didnt bother" with BS will be screwed and i'll be happy.

If I recall correctly there was a point in the beta where some crafted items were like that. They had one stat for certain and then a randomized secondary stat. Blizzard apparently decided that tossing rng on top of rng and then raising the costs across the board was more "fun" than filling in pieces of gear you need to progress. That's ok though, because if they make the blacksmith unattractive then people will just use the AH more. Then when they run out of gold, they'll be more incline to use the RMAH, which is all they really want us to do anyways.
If i had a complain is the amount of mats it takes.... Like 40 blue items to make a roll is way too much. But the way it was early beta was really bad too (everyone using BS items all over the place).

None of this applies at 60. And I still didn't use my max level BS on my alt. Crafting and gambling and it's very easy to get a bad item in this game. It's better to put a little more gold into just getting something guaranteed on the AH.
The crafting prices are changing next patch, i don't see a problem with the system compared to the gambling system in Diablo 3.
The gear is mainly used for people leveling up (yes i know there is lvl 60 gear as well), same went for the gambling system in Diablo 2 (except for jewelery).
Not everyone uses the auction house, many players still enjoy making their own stuff, and the BS gear is better then drops in many situations for those that don't use the AH.

Except that legendaries are essentially broken and rarely if ever an upgrade, so why bother?
