I agree, goodguy (and basically everyone else), and this is something that a lot of people have wanted for years. Our reputation system is not easily visible or accessible- I'm meaning here that we don't have something under our avatars or something that actually says our reputation, just one lame green box that everyone seems to have. I think it would be nice if we could at least add two or three points to the same person, or have a much lower limit on the spread-around, because there's a lot of times I want to give (positive or negative) points to someone but I can't because of how limited the system is.
It would also be nice if some simple math equation could be worked in to the reputation system's core code so that reputation could affect your rank- it wouldn't be that hard (it would actually be really easy) because both reputation points and total posts are just numbers. But that might be too ambitious
Is there a way to see more than the last 5 reps you received?
Also, we should adjust the system so that when we do have a decent amount of reputation points, it shows up under our avatar. I know we have that little green box, that says we are "on a distinguished road" but that doesn't mean anything since everyone has that.
On other forums, the more reputation you had, the more boxes you had and you could definitely dip into the negative and have multiple red boxes.
I think we should do this. Who's with me?
I think it's a great idea, and I hope well get the reputation system working.
That distinguised road thing does change however, it's just that only Silver, Ferret and Elfen currently have enough to trigger the change (ther emay be others, but I know of these three). I think it's 50+ points you need for the next step.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I don't think flame wars would start. I think it should be implemented because it's the best way to judge if a person's posts are worth reading or not. It means way more than post count and join date.
Right now I have 43 points.
I think the reputation system altogether is a silly idea. People have given me bad reps, based on their opinions and not facts. Really, reputation is in the eye of the beholder, while someone may have done something that you feel is right or wrong, unless you are that person, you don't really know why they did it, and I feel it is silly to judge someone based only on their reputation. People do change, yes it is rare, but it does happen! If someone admits to their mistake, apologizes, and atones for their actions, I would say that person has leaned something in the process, and is a step above the person who will never speak for themselves, or make their own mistakes and learn from them.
You have any idea how many people throughout history have had HORRENDOUS reputations, given to them by people who: 1. do not understand that person 2. Do not even attempt to admit they could be wrong about something.
Virtually every famous person, and some point or another, has has the skeptical eye of the public judge them, and has inmost cases been deemed (crackpot or insane) when really, they are brilliant.
Where we would be today, if you did not pay attention to someone based on their rep?
the answer is; in the dark age.
Reputation points in my eyes, is something that should be abolished, not only due the biased nature of it, but because people make mistakes, and if they are truly sorry for their mistakes , and seek the knowledge to better themselves, I think that speaks for that persons character. I can honestly see no good, emerging from "reputation points" and feel they should be removed from this forum. It is just wrong to judge someone based on what others think of them, and not what you yourself, think of them.
I personally feel that Reputation points should stay in, but not as anything special. Simply a "Look how many reputation points I got! I'm so 1337!" type thing. That way they can whine or boast and people not wanting anything to do with it won't have to have anything to do with it.
that would also work for me, I really don't care what someone else thinks of someone, what is important to me, is what I think of that person.
I know a lot of you (not all) would end up just looking at the rep, and if it was bad, not bothering to read what the person said.
If you really don't like someone and never want to read their thoughts again, is it not possible just implement a feature in the user control panel where you are unable to read any of his posts?? (ie I muted/squelched/silenced you)
I think it may be a good thing that many admins are putting forth their efforts into the Wiki, something of actual use... and for that I am thankful.
Something like a rep system such as this, I feel, is completely unnecessary.

Yeah, you have to add that user to your ignore list or whatever it's called here. I think it's under Buddies or something on the UCP.
The system would be more honorary than systematic... No, that's not the right word... Practical? As in, like you guys have said, it's more a badge than an end-all for that person. But, if the amount of times people could add to your reputation was increased, it would become an average of your total points, so anyone would get a general ball park of how you are on this forum. I don't know, it makes sense to me somehow, lol.
I think it would be a nice addition for those that deserve it.
I wholeheartedly think there is an underlying reason why people fear the system.
For those that are worried they will make a mistake or say something wrong and get negative repped, the balance thing is still there, for if I were to see a later post admitting, correcting, or apologizing for said mistake, I would then positive rep that post thus taking it back to 0.
The rep system works because it's not what one or two people think, but what the forum thinks as a collection.

Don't fear the system.
I fear that you are one the few people, who would actually be sensible enough to actually do that though, and for the most part, people may not even see the correction / apology, and abide by their negative rep.
I just think this system will diminish the chances the average person will even bother to care what your are saying.
I'd be with that, a trial period would be in everyone's best interest. But, of course, we'd have to get administrators to actually start implementing new things based on this. Who know's how long that could take (no offense- I know you guys are probably busy with not only this site, but others, as well).
Rep doesn't really have a big influence because of the manner in which it is used. Usually, 90% of the forum are floating in the middle. There is a bunch of old-timers/famous people who have the very high rep count (such as Siaynoq), and there are a few people who REALLY pissed everyone off.
We once made an experiment on Nival. How long would it take to get a persons rep below 300 points. It took ages, ages of systematic reputation lowering from old-timers onto a bot account. It's pretty hard to diminish anyone's reputation too much.
On the other hand, getting a high reputation is much easier. We had a guy with 10000 rep, lol...
If anyone uses rep to judge a person, their choice. I've already said. It's their gain or their loss. I never used rep in this way because usually it represents a person's stay on the forum more than anything else. Although, post count + rep can give a rough idea of what the person has been doing (e.g., a high-rep low-poster is pretty impressive, while a negative-rep super poster is suspicious).
If a person is being repped negatively by anyone on the forum, regardless of whether their position is right or wrong, probably shouldn't stay on the forum. For us, it was always a fun feature, and hardly anyone had a red reputation, the vast majority was green, and people who stayed long had huge reputations, lol...

OK, seriously, this is a fucking forum... not a court or something where people with bad rep are going to be electrified. No need to blow such a big deal out of this.

Again, you don't realize some people accept they have made a mistake, apologize, and change their ways.
It's a rare thing but it does happen.
I mean, some people can never be forgiven for their repeated bad actions, no matter what they say, it is hard to ever trust them again. I agree those people have no place here, but the common person, who has only made such a blunder once, does not belong here?
I'm sorry but I for one will be reading your post's, regardless of what you rep is, I hope everyone feels this way too.

It's not that people won't read people with low reputation's posts, it's just that the ideals, opinions, and/or information in said person's post will not be valued as much. Or is that what you meant?
Again, you don't realize some people accept they have made a mistake, apologize, and change their ways.
That's 1% of people of the 1% of people that will have low rep on this forum. It's not worth making a decision that would benefit the other 99%~99%.
And bad rep is not going to prevent the person from posting or being read. They're just going to have a dark cloud over them. But you think that wouldn't be true otherwise? People are just going to forget such an annoying member if there is no rep system? No. Rep doesn't change anything.

I don't care who reads my posts. I've survived the rep system on other forums and I'll survive it here.
Meh, I feel it's a bad thing. As it's been pointed out before, yes, most of us here on this thread will ignore the reputations mostly, but many people will not.
I vote no on Proposition Rep Wreck. (Did you like that? Lol, I came up with that all on my own. ^_^)
