I'm from wow, so I guess that is where my logic is, but for some reason I'm noticing that, 1 hander weapons of equal level have the same dps as equivelant level 2 handers, but 2 handers are faster, doesn't seem logical to me.
if your looking at the DPS number. well the DPS is the same. damage range x attacks per second bla bla. You can find the formula on the wikis.
The key thing is that DPS isnt the end all and be all of a weapon (although it almost is....). What really matters is your build and how your gearing for the build. I prefer fast 1 handers and a source for my wiz. I love giant 2handers for my barb (but he isnt in inferno yet so who knows by then).
take many of the above posters advice and make a build and set up you ENJOY. cause frankly I find thats the best part of this game in the diversity of play style.
The "damage" shown on the left of the character page (under armor) is somewhat of a misnomer, as it takes attack speed into account. If you hold your mouse over a weapon, the large number is dps, which factors in weapon damage, attack speed, and any other damage affecting affixes on the weapon. If you look below that large number, it shows both the weapon damage and attack speed. So the green or red value which shows the difference in "damage" does factor in both weapon damage and attack speed.
if an ability "deals 150% weapondamage" - WHICH number is taken for that 150%?
the naked "x-x Damage" on the weapon? the listed dps on the weapon? or even the final damage shown on the char-screen?
and if the number is taken from the "weapon-screen" - what about 2 1hands.... from which one will be the number taken? left or right? or additive from both?

% weapon damage uses the non-dps, 'naked' damage. For dual wielding, it does some sort of weighted average, but I'm not sure on the details.

some kind of weighted average makes sense. i was looking for the sense of dualwielding when only the "mainhand" deliver the damage-output since there is no auto-attack for the offhand.
is there a way to easy compare or easy decide "ok, this 2h is dealing now much more damage than my 2 1h"?

Actually when duel-wielding, you alternate with which weapon you hit with. that's why it's a dps loss if the weapons are not around the same damage (which means it is better to use a shield)
Edit ~ The reason it's a dps loss, is when you duel weild, you do get an increase in attacks per second, so say you're using two weapon at 1.4 attacks per second, you will go up to 2. So if weapon 1. hits for 100, and weapon two hits for 100, you will be doing 200 dps. But, if you have weapon 1 at 100 and weapon two at 20, you will do 120 but if you throw a shield on, it will be 140 dps....
now i hope i didn't screw my thinking up as im of to bed now.
So what are teh pros and cons of each?
