You may funk with the English language all you want... mindless belief in something is a religion. Including mindless non-belief, which is truly a belief opposite of another belief.
Believing that God does not exist is not any less a religion than believing that Hell exists or believing that multiple universes exist.
And you seem to be under the confusion that I'm religious?
If you don't understand anything about religion, don't talk about it. You can't say it's a failed concept, you've just said you don't understand it. It's like saying penguins can fly when you never saw one but you know it's a bird.
Well, of course it is, but that's because it's your opinion. You're looking at it a different way, so you're wording it, by your own nature, in a negative connotation that's meant to make it seem illogical. Nothing wrong with that, it's your opinion, and you're not hurting anyone by thinking that way.
But, Equinox isn't talking about Catholicism (which is what you just described in your own words). She's talking about Deism.
Deism is pretty much this: We belief in catholicism
but not in all of the interpretations and thus we reject things like revelations, miracles, etc,... but we still belief in that one true god though based on, well nothing, except you know, believing in him,
Doppel, silly, you know as well as I do (since you have such an awesome grasp of Catholicism, since I know you thoroughly studied it on your own, studied each and every one of their theological statements, attended their sermons, and read their edited version of the original texts to gain your superb and absolute understanding of it, and are thus able to make such statements as this) that Catholicism is, by definition, wholly dependent on such rituals and what you've mentioned, and would not be Catholicism without it. Therefore, Deism is nothing like Catholicism because it lacks everything that defines Catholicism. It would be like saying I am a frog because I'm made of atoms and frogs are made of atoms.
yeah, as humans we can know and understand God
Deism doesn't claim to understand God, it claims that a God exists, in some intelligent form.
although we don't base any of that understanding and knowledge on anything
And, of course, you know that no thought is baseless, or it would not be a thought. But I don't need to say that to you, because you're so amazingly smart
hell not even the half baked stories telling us about God is a basis of our understanding
You know, I'm sure Equinox could offer you some titles and authors that could help you to understand what Deism is, because you just contradicted it. But you're probably just making that up, because I know you're such a brilliant thinker.
and knowledge of that God, we just know and understand him because, you know, we belief in this one supreme being and um, yeah, its retarded. Failed atheist.
And, defaming (insulting) anyone's ideals in such a negative way is flame, as defined by rules here. But I'm sure you were just joking. You have always had such an awesome sense of humor I'm so glad you're here
I vote we start another religion based on Michio...
Kakuism..
haha in so fucking drunk right now.
Also kudos to the person that corrected my grammar failure in the title of this thread!
i read all of this activity since my last post, and fail to see the relevance of many of your posts. Seriously, I mean it;s not like we don't have the potential to learn the things we wwant to know.
I now realize it is not because of religion or politics or stubbornness, that we are failing as a species, it is simply because of <FEAR>
yep I sed it, too many people are afraid to live in the world of change (allthough it is in fact inevitable to avoid change) some poeple would rather live their lives in ignornace, and contribue to the downfall of the human race, instead of living a life of sacrifice, a life where you served a purpose, a life where you contributed to the success of your race. It is these people that I would like to meet, hug, kiss, embrace. The ignorant human that lives a blind, pointless life, and did not make a differance must be extinquished!
Alll In going to say is this.. Eqinox, if we do not achieve/ start working towards type 1 we as a species are are fucked, if you deny that, you contribute to condemning us all to certain doom.
KAKUISM = MY RELIGIONN
I for one, refuse to live in FEAR any longer, and plan to make an effort in my life towards the transition of type o to type 1. I will die a happy man if I see us reach type 1 in my lifetime.
Deism is not a religion. It's a philosophical viewpoint. A reasonable conclusion that it is more probable for a creator(s) to exist than it is not. This is where deism starts, and this is where deism ends. It doesn't agree with Catholism or other because Catholics believe in God via blind faith, not via reason.
What you're talking about, Doppel, sounds like a slant, like process deism or something. I only accept pure original deism, since any slanting from it, in my opinion, signifies the beginning of a religion rather than a philosophy.
These are all the various slantings people made up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deism#Subcategories_of_deism
Many are afraid to accept basic deism because it leaves barely any ground for anything. As always, people prefer to seek help from something they know nothing about rather than believe in themselves.
Atheism is not questioning. It's opposition. Questioning is agnosticism. Atheism is a blind belief that God does not exist. It's not a reasonable conclusion that God does not exist, because that's impossible. It's also not questioning, because questioning leaves room for possibility, atheism does not.
Curious, I am. Equinox...Recently, I have always considered myself to be an atheist, without really even knowing what it meant to be "atheist"
to me you make a valid point... I am not sure the lot of people who are atheist out there (or at least think they are) even realize what it actually means to be an Atheist.
I myself, want to believe in my own version of god, but I refuse to believe the one major religion, the one with that fairytale ending that pretty much tells most people that their fate is eternal suffering. To me that is an insult, personally... (if I don't believe in something but I am still a good person in my life I am still doomed? wtf? Even if am REALLY GOOD? no believe in thy name or be condemned) to me, when I first heard this at an early age, not only did it terrify me, I also said to myself.... "would god really do that?" and to this day I still believe no. I once, very niavly asked a pasture "so what about all of the priests and ministers that have been known to congregate with children? what could their fates possibly be?" His reply to me was "If you ask god for forgiveness, and embrace him as your father, you will be omitted into heaven" To this day I am still truly disturbed by that conversation, as this also applies to REPEAT rapists, terrorists, pedophiles, serial killers, Hitler ect.
so I ask what does this make me if I am not an atheist? I do not believe the full extent of any religion, although I do firmly believe in many of the teachings from many religions, such as Karma, the ten commandments and many other teaching that portray anything pure and good. At the same time I still want to find out everything possible, about the universe, about the creator (if their is one), about everything.
So if i am not atheist (because I believe that since right now we have no way of knowing if god/creator exists so I cant say either way if I believe or disbelieve, basically Im just not sure) Look at it this way; to me it's like asking someone if a planet exists called "I5HAJA9" that is almost identical to earth... somewhere in the depths of space.
they would turn to you and say "I don't know, maybe it does and maybe it doesn't, but since their is no proof I cannot say" that is what I am. I want to find that planet, but even if I never do, I still will not rule out either possibility -it may exist- or it -may not exist- but either way I will die trying to find out.
So I ask? what does that make me then, how would you classify me? Scientologist? since I now know I am not an Atheist.
I actually had someone try to tell me today, get this, "the dark matter that lies in space is heaven, and the dark energy that takes up most of our universe is our god, the reason we cannot see it is because it lies in another dimension (the afterlife) when we die our soul leaves this dimension, and who I am to say he is wrong, hell, he could be right. That is certainly not what I believe, but at least his theory does not condemn the innocent.
My question then to him was "so where is hell then" I was thinking he would reply "Earth" but instead he looked at me and said " the sun is hell" and you are only sent there if you were truly meant to be, and there is no escape until the star in extinguished, at which point you will re-incarnate somewhere else, a place that can sustain life where you will be given another shot at heaven. just like that a theory (a very simple one) was born.
Ice fishing all day today, some strange but interesting topics can arise....
Myself, I really do want to believe in something, and right now science is the closest thing we have (I think) to something, and for that we should praise it.
as this also applies to REPEAT rapists, terrorists, pedophiles, serial killers, Hitler ect.
If you're talking about modern Biblical Christianity (which excludes sects of Christianity which add books to the base version of the Bible like Catholicism and Mormon), which is by far the most prevalent arena of it today, no. Repeating a sin over and over again simply means you're interested only in the sin, and it's your heart's desire. Therefor, Christ is not the center of your heart and you are not a Christian, therefor not forgiven. I could get some verses for you, if you want, to cite that (if you really care that much).
I agree with you, however, that a perfect God would understand that humans are, by nature, fallible, and thus not damn anyone not perfect to an eternal torment. Plus, perfection is always relative morally.
But in any case, I agree. I don't think it's logical to assume
Myself, I really do want to believe in something, and right now science is the closest thing we have (I think) to something, and for that we should praise it.
Just be careful how far you go with that thought, or you'll end up with the terrible religion you don't want to be in to. Also, be sure to never let it escape your mind that science is only observation, it's people with logical minds that make the final call and interpret data.
Holy shit, I think you're going off the deep end. It's thoughts like this that lead to genocide and other mass-extinctions of sects of humanity:
The ignorant human that lives a blind, pointless life, and did not make a differance must be extinquished!
Secondly, if you make this true for you:
KAKUISM = MY RELIGIONN
You will inevitably veer from the logical path of science and only accept things that support your ideals. Be careful about that, or you will become your own monster.
to clarify when I say repeat offender , I mean someone can be a killer his whole life , then one day wake up at the age of 75 and ask for forgiveness, never kill again, and he is going to heaven?
Also you didn't answer my question as to how you would classify me (in terms of what religion do I fall into, if any) I really would like to know since the next time someone asks me what religion I am (or the next time I am in court for that matter) I actually have an intelligent response not just "uhh Atheist I think"
@ First Paragraph: Oh, okay, I agree with you then. That is ridiculous
@ The Rest: Honestly, I would classify you as Agnostic; really, a searching Agnostic (my own term, which I apply to myself), more specifically. Searching meaning you're still looking diligently for an answer (because there's also Agnostics who don't care, as in they don't believe God does or does not exist, but that either way it has no bearing on their life, and thus they don't pursue better knowledge on the subject). But you know what, these titles are just formalities- no individual person's views can be adequately summed up in one title.
Edit:
And I'm sorry I didn't answer your question- I kind of just skimmed your posts.
Magistrate, WOW! thank you, I mean really, thank you a lot!~:):):):):):)!
After reading up on what an "Agnostic" is, I finally realize, for the most part, this is what I am, and always have been.
Now at least next time I am in court I can tell everyone this, and feel like I actually know what I am speaking of. I did not fully understand where I fell in terms of classification anyway...
THANK YOU FOR GUIDING ME TO THIS KNOWLEDGE KIND SAGE!
to clarify when I say repeat offender , I mean someone can be a killer his whole life , then one day wake up at the age of 75 and ask for forgiveness, never kill again, and he is going to heaven?
The fact is that you can go off and blow a nuclear bomb in London or Washington DC or Jerusalem or Rome, go off and rape thousands of teenage girls and make all of them pregnant, then go off and torture millions of people, then the day before you die, you can ask for Christianity's god's forgiveness and "take christ into your heart" and get a first class express ticket to Heaven. BUT if your Islamic and your a doctor and you cure CANCER, but you don't believe in Christianity or "have christ in your heart", your going to suffer in hell for all eternity.
That is the logic of the New Testament. And the Old Testament? Don't get me started...
(Off topic side note: I bet that now that I said a few major cities and nuclear bomb, Mr Bush is having his lackies read all my posts to see if I am a terrorist. *Eye roll.*)
My children will follow the ten commandments, but other than the moral teachings from the bible, I think Christianity has nothing to offer that will positively help them in their lives.
Why riddle your brain with information that is detrimental, not only to you, but your society, and the future of your society.
Christianity is one thing, I plan not to ever pursue. I believe It simply has too many flaws and teachings that are an insult to every living thing on the planet earth.
It is fine if you don't know something. It is not fine to not know shit about a subject and bash it, as LinkX, Doppel, and you have been actively in this thread.

These two paragraphs are the most amusing piece of absolutely illogical thinking I may have ever read.
How can you call something detrimental when you do not know it? How can you know something has flaws when YOU_DO_NOT_KNOW_IT? looooooooooooool
You judge Christianity from stereotypes, and you judge pieces of Christianity, lumping them together (just as Doppel judges deism, lumping it together with slantings of deism and Catholicism).
In other words... you're attacking something that doesn't even exist.
I was not aware I was misinformed about anything, as I have asked many hardcore Christians these Niave questions, and always got the same response.
While I may not know everything about Christianity, as I sure you do not either, I feel I know enough to make these comments and critiques. Who are you to say otherwise? Exactly.
I see these flaws with my own eyes and interpret them with my own brain.
Look at it this way. You own a vehicle that wont start, it does not take a genius or a mechanical master to tell you there is something wrong with your vehicle. Just because you don't know/have all of the information does not mean you can not make an accurate assumption that is in fact correct.
I know I tend to overgeneralize a lot of things, which is why I can hardly ever be called wrong.
I see the effects and have enough information to confidentially say the word "detrimental" while I may not posses, every little bit of information, I certainly posses enough to make that statement, and neither you nor anyone can convince me otherwise.
If you let someone/something mold your way of thinking, you will not be able to think for yourself, this is my greatest fear (in the past) and in the present today.
I was not aware I was misinformed about anything, as I have asked many hardcore Christians these Niave questions, and always got the same response.
Yeah, one mistake here...
Most Christians do not know shit about Christianity.
Most Christians didn't even read their holy book.
You ever saw those Christians with signs like "Kill <insert something>?" That's against "Do not kill." I don't know what kind of Christians are Christians nowadays...

I don't follow the analogy. A vehicle needs to move. That's its goal. Christianity doesn't have a goal.

Mold your thinking? You've molded your own thinking. You've convinced yourself of something that's not true. Instead of researching the topic and finding out the truth, you've made conclusions based on stereotypical opinions of the general Christian and atheist public.
I need not search for such information, because I already have all the information that is required to make the decision I have made, which is in fact NOT false.
Back on topic here, I was just looking at string theory, and M theory, and have recently starting to look at the work of Edward Witten, the man who is responsible for M theory.
I was surprised to learn, this man is thought to be the equivalent of Einstein by many renown scientists. Although he is certainly not as interesting as my main man, I think He may have an understanding of the mathematical world that is more important than many people give him credit for.
These brilliant people, should be, in my opinion, the rock stars of the world. While they already are to some, not nearly enough, I fear.
Believing that God does not exist is not any less a religion than believing that Hell exists or believing that multiple universes exist.
