Use this thread to discuss stem cell research and world policies.
So I just flipped on the news and seen that the USA is holding clinical trials this summer of 2009, where they will be testing stems cells, from embryos, on ten people with spinal cord injuries.
You may or may not know that stem cell research was banned in the USA (and many other countries) for years.....
So now, that the research ban is lifted, they are diving deeper into the murky hole.... this is a very controversial subject. (still) and something that I won't comment on just yet, I want to see your response before I reveal my opinion.
I was also shocked to learn, that one of the men that will undergo this experiment is from Calgary, Alberta (my hometown)
I know there is a big stem cell research facility here in Missouri so I don't think it was a nation wide ban, just a majority of the states. If it helps people get their lives back I'm all for it.
The info is here on the policy regarding stem cell research in the world. It basically just says that privately funded research was allowed on dead/left over embryos, but using embryos for the soul purpose of experimentation was illegal and the government would only fund stem cell research done on embryos that were left over or (doomed) (In the USA)
-This is the first time the US government will be fully funding stem cell research and allowing and embryo's to be created for the soul purpose of sacrificing (destroying it) For the purpose of science. In turn Opening the door to a world of new research.
-Also note that this is the first time (made public anyway) stem cells have EVER been applied to humans!!
I don't see what the big deal about it was. It's not like they were going around impregnating people, killing their babies to gather fetuses. There were MANY MANY ways to get stem cells WITHOUT killing anything.
People fucking piss me off sometimes. Especially ones that were devoutly against this citing aborition. You know what? Those people need to take their religious fantacism and shove it. This is the United States of America, not the United Christian States of America.
This research will do FAR more good than it ever will harm.
I always thought of it as inevitable that stem cell research would get more funding and people would eventually get used to the idea. And sure enough they are. And with a new administration that practices pragmatism over idealism, these kinds technologies are going to make some huge strides toward curing diseases and treating injuries.
I certainly did not expect such actions from an Obama committee so early.... hESC must have been all over him for awhile regarding this. I was shocked when I seen this, I don't think my initial info was completely correct, as my news channels seem to give faulty information all the time.
This explains it well. Read on if you wish (not that long of a read)
Huh? I had no idea they existed. I wonder how many people are going to interpret these things.
But anyway, yeah no real lift on any bans has happened just yet, but they probably will sometime this year. There are tons of human embryos destroyed all the time. Hopefully one if his first measures will be to save those embryos for study.
Well, when you have people licking the dirt he walks on, everything gets through fast.
What an odd thing to say. The only thing he's really done so far was scrap the extraordinary rendition edict of which there is still a lot of confusion over. And also he's closing Guantanamo, which won't be for at least a year.
Stem cell has already proven to be able to help some people. It's to what extent it can help people we're unsure of. But I mostly just hear of what it might could do for people.
Sorry, after reading that article again, I know realize it is not the one I was referring to.
The Info I was hearing was this, relating to the meeting of President Barack Obama and the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper to discuss this issue. Follow this link for the news info I was given......

I was referring to the widespread fanatical loyalism to him, to the extent he's become a trend. I guess if he fixes all our problems and makes tomorrow glisten with golden rays of sunshine, ring with birdsong, and smell of wildflowers along a babbling brook, I have no problem with him. Politics is retarded, these days- they don't need my additional retardation.

I'm not sure if you were specifically talking to me when you said that, but, as I've said, I have no issue with it.

Mm, yeah. I'm a political science major and I hate politics. I now have more faith in the bureaucracy and dream of becoming a city worker.
Stem cell research is such a political issue though. It's like the 21st century abortion.
Did'nt they use stem cells to regrow a piece of some girl's skull?
Can't answer cause I don't know (I searched)
But I can tell you this. Though other countries have claimed to have done similar research, it will be the first time that the results from the study will be clearly disseminated to scientists and physicians around the world.
Another Tidbit I missed that happened today;
Friday, Obama signed an executive order reversing Bush's ban on funding for international groups that aid in abortions. (This can only help stem cell research)
if you want to read the full article it's in my other post.
Well, I guess once it gets more integrated in to "accepted" scientific practice, it won't be a problem. The only people left fighting against it will be those random once-and-done web pages with the creativity of a legalist's painting. Hm... But then, I'm a legalist by my own definition of the term, and I paint...
Oh well. It won't be thought of as a "moral" thing anymore once enough time passes, it what I think I meant to say.

its a religious issue, i see no negative ramifications from developing uses for undifferentiated cells. sure it may inevitably lead to cloning, but its for the greater good.
i have no idea why religion was affecting government...
and about damn time!

If it helps people and doesn't harm anyone else, I don't care. Biological science isn't my field and never will be.
