There was recently an event orchestrated by Peta in the World of Warcraft server Whisperwind, where a few Horde forsaken were to kill some seals. Then, in there wonderous glory, the Alliance heroes were to come in and kill the evil Horde Forsaken. However, things don't always turn out as one plans, which Peta learned - and hard.
According to WoWInsider.com, the Horde showed up by the dozens, slaughtering the Alliance as well as the Seals. And, as if that was not enough, and to add humiliation not only to the Alliance, but to Peta themselves, the Horde had a Barbaque. Yes, the slaying of small white seals and the barbaqueing and eating of Pigs. What a day for Peta!
However, while the results were hilarious, this brings to the forefront a very starteling trend that may be occuring. Yes, this was World of Warcraft, but this also sets precidence for companies to hold rallies in online games in general. And not only Blizzard's World of Warcraft, but Everquest, Titan's Quest, and even possibly Diablo 3....
Now, I ask you, what are your thoughts on this? Do you agree with this tactic? Do you think it was just in good humor? Do you think that they got what was coming to them? Or do you think advertisement in games in general is wrong? What is your oppinion?
I find it hilarious, Peta gets this thing ready with four Hordies who are killing seals and expects the knights in shining armour, the Alliance, to kill the Hordies.
Then the Hordies come and cockslap everyone.
It's beautiful really.
Oh, and on a more serious note, the seals that Peta is actually upset, in the real world are being killed to keep from killing off the fish in that area. The seals are, actually, driving the fish to extinction. But the fish arn't cute, like the seals, so Peta doesn't care...

We obviously aren't talking about the newfoundland seal hunts, that greenpeace and peta have long protested. While I'm skeptical about the idea that the seal are driving the fish to extinction (usually animals are in a relative state of equilibrium, unless they recently arrived, or we have changed the natural conditions), I can confirm PETA do have campaigns in support of fish. Just look at the ridiculous 'Sea Kitten' campaign they released a while ago (http://www.peta.org/sea_Kittens/about.asp)... I'm sure rebranding the word "fish" is all that needs to be done to save the worlds fish stocks... But what else would you expect from an organisation like PETA? Political correctness is the same BS, change the words, keep the stigma, and wonder why you need a more correct term 5 years later...
Though as dumb as the sea kitten campaign is, I don't think I lost more respect for PETA (something hard to do given my thoughts on them) as when they suggested Ben and Jerry's icecream company switch to using breast milk... http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2008/09/25/peta-icecream.html. While the obvious thought is who wants to eat some strangers breast milk? (a contagion disaster just waiting to happen) What I really want to know what kind of a person is willing to be milked for a living? Makes selling sperm seem normal by comparison...
More on topic: I really don't like the idea of companies/organisations using games as methods of pushing their products/causes. Viral advertisement is becoming more common as we get more restiant to traditional advertisement... It gets really annoying seeing it invade every aspect of life... I often play games (of all different sorts) as an escape from the daily grind, something to break up what can be stressful days. Having anyone try to further invade that space just screams of a lack of respect.
Actually, it's the Canadian seal hunts. And if you look, Peta's advertising is that they are doing it for the white seal coats, yet Canada banned the killing of Seal pups that not molted the white coat.
Yeah, it would be the NFL seal hunts (as well as others)... They do actually eat the seals for meat (I've been told its really fatty...), so its not like we're talking about just a fur trade.
But we're talking about PETA, which consists of mainly naive teenage girls, washed up porn stars, and those crazy individuals who would rather swerve into a pack of schoolkids if it meant they could avoid hitting a deer...
I know in NZ we have these people from Greenpeace who have no balls. They continually moan about Japanese whaling around this part of the world but none of them actually do anything of any significance.
If you're not going to start sinking Japanese ships then don't even bother.
PETA and Greenpeace are both profitable organizations
The Japanese have been doing that for years, and because the UN doesn't have the backbone to actually take action against them, the Scandinavian countries have been talking about returning to hunt them as well. I can't say I blame them, they let their industry die and have watched while the Japanese have been all but given permission as they repeatedly break the moratorium they agreed to. I don't think anyone is buying their claims as they are doing it in the name of science (unless they mean economics, and how much a raw slab of endangered whale can fetch).
If you ask me instead of attacking ships they should harass Japanese fishing fleets (hunting whales or not) until the government gets serious about taking action to stop it. Its not violent, and wont cost greenpeace the reputation that has already been marred by some other more questionable activities. Other activity, such as encouraging boycotts of certain Japanese goods could have an effect in changing Japanese policy. When you threaten an economy, you tend to get better results.
But I don't think eco-terrorism is a healthy approach to solving the problem as it creates negative publicity for the cause.
I don't think they should be comparing farming to any human genocide. Thats just going to push people further away from them
They should be more realistic in their goals and statements if they want to achieve anything
If anything they should be equating KFC to a Ugandan public toilet. Those places are constantly being closed down for breaking hygiene standards

I think they got what they deserve. I hate in your face advertising and demonstrations like that.
Just out of principle...
Thats quite funny though... Reminds me of that time there was a funeral memorial thing on WoW and it was ambushed and everyone got killed
Or they could get Blizard to make a patch for like a day to allow X amount of people into a certain game...
Idk...

Alright, have the Jewish people killed all the Peta people yet?
No, but seriously, they tried to equate KF-fucking-C....to the Holocaust... Try to wrap your mind around that for a moment...

If there were no hamburgers here in America, there'd be a nationwide riot, and all members of PETA would be burned at the stake.
And least ... that's how I think it'd happen. >>
