My favourite must be the manual to Pharaoh. Around 200 pages of info on every aspect of the game, not just controls, the main character with a bio and a summary of the story in five sentences, but detailed descriptions of every building, menu, unit, function and aspect of the game. That's what a manual should be like, not the lite version we always get hit with these days.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
That's quite a manual indeed. But yes, you're right. They're all pretty lite versions these days. My longest is the Wing Commander: Prophecy one. About 75 pages. Detailed specs on every ship including the damage of all guns, missiles, and torpedoes. It also has tons of plot related material. Like correspondence between two high ranking officials, garbled transmissions from an attacked science outpost (literally I get the chills when I read it and it's also very lonely and sad reading) with also detailed intel reports on the new alien race that is attacking the Terrans.
Exacly. That's what a manual is all about. Though I guess with the digital age intruding, it juts doesn't make sense to print that much paper when they know half the customers will just ignore and start installing the game instead.

Well you take Mass Effect for example. The codex thing is like the ultimate manual. It has tons of information but can only be accessed in the game itself.

Still directed at the player though. But only the kind of player who gets really into the fictional world they're playing in. Talks about all the different races, technologies, important historical events, and political structures.
The game does have a printed manual. Strictly just gameplay information though.
I got one manual, can't remember what the name of the game it's for is, but the manual is actually a hell of alot more entertaining then the game itself... It's even loaded with a shit load of real facts, because it's based on scientific fact, even though it's a sci fi game. Then you got like three or four full length stories that you can read about random people who never even made it into the game.
Actually, I think I played the game like...three times?... The manual though... That is an award winner...

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
That should be some high quality scans of the manual in English.
