Like most of you here, I’m waiting for Diablo III or some continuation of the Diablo franchise. I’m sure most of you, including me, have often thought if the game will be worth the wait and will stand amongst the greatest games of all time, or at least the other Diablo games. And my answer to that question is a big fat yes. Why you might ask? Simple.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warning: These are my assumptions and reasons. I’ve put much thought into each reason, with an educated answer. The answers are not official and are only beliefs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First off, Diablo III will be designed and created by Blizzard Entertainment. The company hails as one of (if not) the greatest video game companies in the industry. Every game they have developed is highly acclaimed, and each game seems to get better than the previous one. This fact alone pretty much insures Diablo III’s success. But when will we learn the game is in development and release window? Good question.
Inevitably, Diablo III will be at least announced this year. Blizzard is not oblivious when it comes to rumors, and they are watching the Diablo III rumors like a hawk. They purposely posted job openings for "the team behind Diablo I and II" to make people realize that Blizzard has something in the works. The rumors following shortly after would show Blizzard just how badly Diablo fans are craving a new Diablo – translating everything they hear into a rumor. The fans of Diablo are getting noticeably impatient, with the rumors escalating to stories on sites such as IGN and GameSpot. To get back on topic – Diablo III will be at least announced this year, at BlizzCon, which I expect to be announced soon, and I expect its release some time mid-late 2008. It will be a tribute to the games tenth year anniversary.
Despite rumors, I myself, highly doubt that Diablo III will be an MMO. Blizzard has World of Warcraft to generate a steady cash flow. Blizzard also seems uninterested to produce any more MMO’s anytime soon, which adds to my doubt. I also believe that with those extra servers that Blizzard has stockpiled – they’ll be honoring the tenth year anniversary of Battle.net as well, with new servers with a little more oomph. Keep in mind the new Battle.net will be activated with the release of Diablo III. (Originally honoring the release of Diablo and Battle.net together in 1997)
Intermission! You’re all probably thinking I’m crazy. You’re all probably right, but who really even cares?
Here’s what I believe will be in Diablo III itself.
Cain will return. Tyrael will return, and most importantly, Diablo will return. These characters are all huge favorites, and the game cannot function without them. Mephisto and Baal? Count them in. Andariel and Duriel? Count them in, too. Azmodan and Belial? You betcha. The game will be larger, and will handle all seven evils.
Diablo II’s vast acts will be nothing compared to Diablo III’s. "Acts" may not even be good enough to describe the world. "Regions" may be a more efficient word to describe Diablo III’s setup. Don’t worry, you can pretty much guess Westmarch, home of the Paladins, will be covered.
There comes a time in a video game franchise’s life when it must change along with time. Diablo’s time to go full 3D may be now. Yes – many of you are shaking your head, but it is fact. Link and Mario evolved. Now the big bad demon must evolve. Trust me, it won’t be such a bad move. It will look awesome.
Diablo III will remain Mature. If Blizzard set this game as Teen to generate more sales, then money has gone straight to their head. Diablo is to please the mature group of fans. Blood and gore will be present. Violence, frightening images, and language? Count it in.
Customizable characters? Oh yes. Very much so. Almost every game will evolve to allow customizable characters. It is an easy addition that allows a lot of people to express their personality. Gender changes I would also assume is present. Skills will not change due to gender. I don’t believe you’d be able to be evil or good, however. I think you’ll only be able to be good – at least on single player.
Speaking of skills – many will return, but there will be many new ones. The classic firewall, lightning, holy hammer, and whirlwind will probably return to satisfy fans with a liking of the old games. Since the graphics and physics engine will most likely be changed, there is a high possibility to see very animated spells and attacks.
That’s only a few of the things I believe to be included in Diablo III.
diablo is isometric and Isometric view is 3d, granted its not platform 3d like the last few legend of Zelda games or Mario 64, but its 3d non the less.
-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Now this may sound crazy, but I would be just as content with the game if it didn't feature Diablo himself, and was merely based on the world of Sanctuary. However, I believe he will be in the third and this is fine with me.
I disagree with you though that the game cannot function withouth Cain or Tyrael. What Tyrael does at the end of LOD, really seems to me like a final gesture of, "Well, I did what I could. You're all on your own now. My meddling is over. Bye." And I wouldn't mind if Tyrael was not in the game, but was only eluded to. Perhaps there are other interesting Archangels that could be introduced. Other maverick ones such as Tyrael.
As for Cain, I'd be interested to see him in the next game only if he was there with the intent of rebuilding the Horadrim. I think that would be a nice little plot twist and then he wouldn't just be some guy who does nothing but teach you about things. While I know this probably sounds like Luke reestablishing the Jedi Order, I'm sure they could play down the resemblence to such a story line and make it far more interesting than that awful series of books.
I harldy see at all why Andariel and Duriel need to make another appearance. Sure they're interesting, but as Elfen Lied was saying, I want to see lots of the other character names in Diablo lore that have only been mildly referenced. Azmodan and Belial I definitely want to see. But the former two, they're defeated, shamed, and I picture them being sentenced just to stay in Hell to guard each respective realm of each Prime Evil. Inarius I would REALLY like to see.
I do agree with you that the graphics and perspective of the game will appear rather different. I don't think Blizzard needs to keep things almost exactly the same just to satisfy their minority hardcore base, however, at the same time, I hope they do not give it an appearance that they think appeals to too wide of an audience range. This train of thought also goes along with what you are saying about the Mature rating which I also hope they keep for Diablo 3. I mean, let's face it: it's a gory and violent game and deserves no less. If they soften up the violence and content, and make it cutesy like Warcraft, well, that will make me kind of sad.
And not surpirsingly, 100% have so far voted "yes"
The fans of Diablo are getting noticeably impatient, with the rumors escalating to stories on sites such as IGN and GameSpot.
When rumours that are of only one sentence (or less) get a notice in those areas, it speaks for itself.
Blizzard also seems uninterested to produce any more MMO’s anytime soon, which adds to my doubt.
They do not seem entirely uninterested, but it will not be soon that's for sure.
I completely agree with you. No matter how "vital" it is to the feel of the game, there is no reasonable reason other than satisfying old fans for Blizzard to keep a set isometric view. It will be fully moveable, because they need new people, and graphics draw people.
with your post you pretty much say everything i'm thinking about Diablo 3, Acid.
certain is that Blizzard knows when to make fans go wild and start rumors. And with their well-known good timing, they make an announcement and everyone goes mad
about Tyrael i dont know if hes "vital" for the games plot. Cain should definitely be in, but if Siaynoq's idea (that i think of as a pretty good one) of re-creating the order of the Horadrim i'd really think Tyral should be in. He was the one that gathered those mages in the beginning anyway.
If there's an invasion or "merge" of the world of sanctuary and the burning hell then such a twist would be almost needed. Anyway, cant wait for the announcement!
i agree mostly with u acid, but i like the view that it is right now in d1-2/lod. i really hope they dont go with fully rotatable cameras or w/e. i hate messing with cammeras in video games. same with the full 3d, i like the look of diablo now, but maybe with higher resolution and better graphics. but the graphics thing is just personal preference and either way it will defintiely b worth the wait, and either way i will definitely buy it.
They should use an engine similar to Sacred's. It let the terrain be incredibly detailed and all the character models to be rendered in full 3d. Isometric does not mean 3d in computer terms. 3d in computer terms means that an object can be rendered in real time and can be looked at from different perspectives. This was not the case in D1 or 2. A jump to true 3d will occur in diablo 3 without a doubt. As for controlling the camera, I like to have a zoom feature to admire weapons and armor and cool looking characters. As far as rotation goes, I prefer either none of a restricted angle to rotate around so that you may not rotate 360 degrees. Maybe like 45 degrees.
Blizzard is one company that manages to make good game, but Blizzard destroyed all my hopes on WarCraft, turning it into a completely different game. This may happen to Diablo, and I will say bye-bye to Diablo just as I have said to WarCraft.
Just as long as the game doesn't look like Sacred 3D, because when it comes to 3D, Sacred sucks. But I would prefer isometric terrain rather than 3d terrain.
"Isometric does not mean 3d in computer terms." - I wonder what do you think about 2.5D?
3D implies movement along three axis represented by X, Y, and Z. Diablo allows movement along only 2 axis, X and Z. The engine fakes the Y axis movement by moving along a distorted vector on the X/Z axis (birds flying, leapers jumping).
even if it took another 10 years? (knock on wood) because by then i think the diablo world would be lost to me.
